Hi Nick, I am a person who sat silently watching and enjoying your videos without commenting. I am 59 years old and at one point in my life 30 years ago had over 90 tanks in my basement where I raised and bred fish. I also worked as a fish room manager in a local pet store and those were the best years of my life. Take my advice and the advice of others that commented here. DO NOT sell your store, take on a partner or lease it out where you will have a controlling interest but not have to be there as often. With all the hard work that you have done in the store I know from personal experience that you will regret your choice to sell. If you have a partner or lease this will free up your time to do what you want. If you get the itch to get back to the retail part and give KZbin a break, well that option would still be available to you. I know that you are young and as you said many doors are open in front of you but you dont need to shut this door. leave it partially open by either taking on a partner or leasing the store. The name can remain the same because you will have the controlling interest without having to be there as much. With proper training the person in charge will be as good as you in maintaining the store for your interest. Take it from an old guy who was once in your shoes and now wishes he had done things differently. There is nothing like doing a job that you actually like and can make you money while remaining a hobby. I really hope you listen to myself and others that have expressed the same comments.

I agree about getting a partner. You just have to be careful though. I have had a partner in my reptile and fish shop and just before I was set to sell the whole business to my partner because I was moving to a different country, he took 40% of the stock and bugged out. It left me with having to scramble to find a buyer with only two weeks before I had had my flight to Germany. So if you do get a partner, just know they can always walk out with their share of the inventory, and really, there's nothing you can legally do about it as it technically is there property. I was able to sell my company but I ended up having to sell if for far less than it should have been as i had so little time to find someone. But if you do go with a partner do not sell more then 40%, make sure there is a clause in the deal where they would have to sell the 40% back if at any time they wish to leave. This way you don't loose part of your product. Also I would have it where you are a silent partner that way you don't have to deal with the day to day running of the store. I would suggest asking a trusted friend, someone you know 100% that can take care of the business side and won't try to duck out.
@BOSS790MN2 ай бұрын
I agree, but Nick is one to decide. If he doesn't want it anymore, unfortunately for us, it is done deal. Unfortunately, many good things are disappearing one by one.
@donivanstryker13402 ай бұрын
@@seangere9698 Not sure what the laws are over the pond but if the partner buys in for 40% of the business the stipulation can be included that Nick would have first option if the partner were to bow out and Nick would bank that money to have the cash to buy the partner out if he decided to leave. This is why a lease would be a bit better because Nick still retains full ownership and if the leaser leaves Nick is not out any money or property. The leaser would only share in a percentage of the profits and nothing more.
@Malysandacz2 ай бұрын
@donivanstryker1340 you don't understand. Nick (and other youtubers) will not say that directly but youtube makes him very good money with much less effort than breeding fish. It is a no brainer, he mentioned clearly what sort of turnover shop makes now and what it can make in the future with majority of that being a profit if you breed your own fish. Yet, he is still giving this up because youtube pays much more.
@donivanstryker13402 ай бұрын
@@BOSS790MN I am merely trying to show Nick that with careful planning and not jumping into things that there are ways that the two things can be done. My concern is that KZbin may not be a lasting outlet for fish breeders. Just look at the fish rooms Nick visits, they are all older people and no new young blood starting and maintaining fish rooms. Its sort of like a sports star that got a university degree, the star always has something to fall back on if something should go wrong. With age comes wisdom and if I could do it all over again I would be in a fish store right now and still breeding fish at home.
@IMaqua2 ай бұрын
As someone who is breeding and selling fish "breeding for profit" is not all about breeding. Unfortunately the business side is much more important. Apart from knowing "how to breed" you need to know "how to sell" fish. As a hobbyist it is hard to exclude and not sell some of the fish species because simply they are not worth selling. Cheers Nick and whatever you decide to do your community will be behind you.

Yeah the advice I'd give is invest in property. People always need a home and prices, especially in Australia from my understanding, are always going up. Do you and sell property as well as own it and rent it out. You'll have that income coming in which if you make your moves right you can have a steady passive income from that meaning you're not reliant on KZbin. It means that if KZbin suddenly vanished as an income stream your not in the ditch suddenly. Plus because it's not your only, or ideally primary, source of income there's less pressure to make videos that hit the numbers at the frequency needed. Instead you can create videos as a passion project/financially beneficial hobby meaning you can make exactly what you want on the schedule you want preventing serious burn out. I think online creators should look at making KZbin a hobby they profit on especially once they got an established fan base and rely on other more passive income streams for their main money long term. Ie put in the grind to create the fan base, use that money to do smart investments (rather then only getting things KZbin/life style related) to allow you to flip over the true income source long term. That's just me though as a none online creator 😅

I've wondered how people do brick and mortar fish shops. I sell online, mostly locally. It's a decent side income, but it's nothing like liveable even if I scaled it to full time. I think my local community doesn't really care where their animals come from, so larger pet shops seem to do better than smaller ones. I'm impressed you got it to 350k. That's an accomplishment. Good luck! You make some amazing videos, so I'm looking forward to what's next.

If a store is generating revenue, selling a real, functioning business for the sake of easy virtual money is a huge mistake. Yes, it might be fatigue, loss of interest, or a shift in focus. But business is about enduring pain. At 50 years old, I can only say that creating the largest possible source of income is the right path in today's world. Find a managing partner or lease the store, but don't lose full control and the flow of money. Greetings from war-torn Ukraine.

Once the hobby becomes a career it does start to lose its luster so good for you and I’m excited to see what you’re gonna be doing in the next couple of months…You are so incredibly talented and clever when it comes to breeding. I’ve watched so many of your out of the box breeding techniques so once again with you being able to put more energy and thought into breeding and not so much time into the business side, really think it’s gonna be incredible and Mind blowing so yeah go for it man super cool. If it is not too late, maybe speak with a business consultant for an organizational re-structure. As a business person myself, maybe you would want to retain the momentum it has built and just get a business manager. You could remain as company owner, but hire someone as the CEO/ COO to manage the business operations side and you could just have summaries/ overviews/ executive decision making or even delegate that to someone else. You could just focus on filmmaking aspect of the company and have someone else take charge of the other departments. It's just that you've been such an inspiration, and to an extent, a projection of what my dreams could have become in another lifetime. Fish keeping and husbandry as a career is not a possibility for me anymore, but I do have regrets not pursuing it. In hindsight, I maybe just wasn't talented enough, but you are. Trust your heart, what you’ve learnt and accept you’ve said you’re ready to move forward…..it’s not easy, but being true to yourself will find so much happiness for you, also for yourself to share and pass on. I wish you all the best in feeling you’ve reached a place of being more content.

I’m 5 minutes into this video(definitely kicking back laying in bed. Haha), and only about 2 months back into this beautiful hobby after a bit of a break due to moving. Was a fan back in the early days of your channel, and after recently diving back in have had a ton of your newer videos to binge, and damn does the passion show. Seeing how far you’ve come with the breeding/shop/video quality and vibes overall shows just how much you care about producing great videos about something you’re truly passionate about. This is truly the type of content I love KZbin for, and do wish you nothing but the best in future endeavors. Can’t wait to see the content to come! …now I can enjoy the rest of this video. Haha Big cheers!

If this means more time doing fish room tours with other breeders then this is great news for me. They were my favourite Aquarium Co-op videos, and when you started doing them I really enjoyed them. Good luck whatever happens!

Hey Nick, I'm happy to see you motivated on your new goal. You've done real work for the hobby internationally through your KZbin and locally with your store so honor to you for that. I also want to say as a 23 year old who's figuring his things out, there was nothing more tempting than to leave to a country where I could start my own farm and have that as my future and life support in the name of passion and love for the hobby. As I grew and expanded my fish room at home I realized that if I was to take such a step in that direction it would have led to a "denaturalization" of the hobby in my eyes and would have stopped seeing it the same, this crushed me because I was absolutely sure that it was what I wanted to do. Having a business is like having a child and we as hobbyists who take care of our fish, have hundreds and thousands of "children" who rely on us for their well-being and inevitably these things clash. And when they do, you suffer because of the positions you're put into because of the business. I finally convinced myself that mixing a genuine passion like this with work for me would have only led to me losing both. People experience burnout within their fishrooms let alone a farm that your life depends on. Those who own a business and run it personally are obliged to be present daily and when your business deals with animals then that daily closeness only multiplies and leaves no room for anything else, this made me shy away from this idea and decided to keep my beloved hobby just a hobby and pour all my passion into without any other obligations. I am sure you'll go on making more and more content that will continue to inspire us as you've been doing for all these years and both you and us will be better off having a free to create and inspire Nick over a Nick that's being limited in the things he could do because of a store. Wish you all the best in this new chapter and am happy for you to see you focused and happy with your decision.

I hope that you've made the right decision and this isn't one your going to regret, you can't get it back once the shops been sold. It was a steady income and making and selling videos is a step into the unknown with a lot of uncertainty involved.

Nick, this is awesome! As long as you are enjoying the hobby I know that we will also get the benefit! I’m looking forward to hopefully a detailed tour of your at home fish room. Loving the tanks behind you and would love to see them up close! Good luck my man!
