By your definition I must have urban resilience. My house and cars are paid for. I have no credit card debt. I’m driving vehicles that will last 10-15 years. I have enough to travel when I want to. I am from a generation where if it all falls apart we’ll just do without and be mostly content with our lifestyle. I don’t grow my own food and if something I’m eating kills me then I just get to go to heaven that much sooner…a pretty good place to be in.😇. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Honestly knowing how to do without is a huge key. I’m afraid a lot of people now don’t know how. People spend so much time and energy avoiding discomfort.
@Junkinsally10 ай бұрын
I got three old men on our road exactly like you. None them grow their own food but all pride themselves in their money. If something were to happen that they couldn’t go to the local restaurants or grocery stores, I would feed them. I have planned for this. Two of them are bachelors and one is taking care of his wife who has dementia. My house is worst looking on the street. My cars are the oldest and look like crap compared to the Land Rover, BMW and new Chevy truck they have, all paid for according to them. However, I grow enough food for a family of 10+ every year. We sell some but mostly store for us and our extended friends and family. The most important part of resilience is knowing what areas it’s vital to develop it in. If you’re dead….well your done. If you’re sick, you’re suffering and if you’re hungry, you’re miserable. Remember there is no guarantee of Heaven, only the hope we’ll all get there someday. In the mean time, try to build in that resilience in the areas it serves the most purpose, health and well being.

@@RootsandRefugeFarm As a person who deals with chronic illness and medical bills that can't be avoided, this makes me sad. We need to be careful not to lose empathy for those whom are suffering and not imply to them they need to deal with their discomfort instead of getting the help they need or offering them support. Let's be careful not to shame people in their suffering. I agree that things today considered basic necessities are not. I think it would help our society immensely if we could give up soda pop and chips and alcohol. Anyway, I love your channel and I appreciate your content. @@princessbabibear4794 I’m grateful to you for mentioning people with chronic illness. While I appreciate the message of resilience, especially the way Jess does it, I have experienced people using the message of resilience to shame people for going through hardships. I’ve been chronically sick. Some of my health problems were easily fixed. On my own. After spending years trying to get help, but being told I was being negative. Your comment makes me think of those kinds of situations. Positivity is used to ignore the problem. Gaslighting also comes in handy when it comes to denying help without saying the word ’NO’. Ironically those same people, in my personal experience, not only use the denial of pain to prevent problem solving, they also shun resiliency. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t, God created us to suffer, self-sabotaging, crabs-in-a-barrel dynamic. I’m grateful for these types of conversations. And for this channel, in general. Being in one place with some many kind, wise people empowering themselves is a heady experience. It’s great medicine for the things ailing me. ❤

There is a tree they call the burning bush, because of it's beautiful autumn colour, the real name is Sprindle Tree or Euonymus. I have no more room for one, I would recommend you get a few, it's not large, more like a large bush. BTW, when I had my son, there were only towelling nappies, there was always a bucket of Napisan in the kitchen, but we did have liners by then, which helped a lot. But we needed to have a large supply of them if you didn't want to wash every day. But those snow white nappies on the line blowing in the wind was a wonderful sight, they smelled so fresh when you brought them in.

Hello jess I wanted to thank you for shining a different light on resilience for me. I was told by a therapist about 7 months ago when I had my emotional break that I was very resilient and I kind of wore it as a thorn in my side because had my circumstances thru out my life not been so hard I wouldn’t have to have formed this resilience of mine. But you spoke of your shoes and your mushrooms and I was able see the gray area in my resilience. Yes I have had it hard but it hasn’t only been my struggles that have made me who I am today. My resilience to preserver, to hope, to believe that what has been lost will be found. That is where my resilience lays as well. Thank you once again for speaking to my heart. And for always being you. Love and Blessing upon you and your family. 🙏❤️

Awe, Happy Birthday, Jackson! Speaking of doing without, one thing that's totally floored me with a daughter in law was not having any clue how to clean a baby up without disposable wipes. I remember many times when my 4 were little in the 90's ans early 2000's(we were living paycheck to paycheck and consistently broke) having to use wash cloths and cloth diapers, and in a pinch even a tea towel for a diaper if we weren't home. I was fortunate to have a Mom and Grandma who taught me well. My daughters know this, thankfully, but my daughter in law not knowing made me realize how "disposable" our culture has become. Resiliency skills are so important! Thank you for this video💕💕 Ps... killing your trees, 😂😂 Oh, people! 😂

Some goals are lofty but isn't that how we achieve great things?😊 My current lofty goal is fresh chicken eggs 🥚🥚 for the family. Resilience is a great word to describe what we're all really trying to achieve. When we didn't have a farm, we turned all of our residential front yard flowerbeds into vegetable gardens. When we didn't have room for storing large amount of home canned foods, we bought a dehydrator and preserved our food into smaller more manageable sizes. When we didn't have chickens or cows, we bought our beef and eggs from a local farmer and supported their homestead and good relationships with local producers. Every little bit counts and it all adds up! Blessings Jess and family and happy birthday to Jackson!

Reseliency sticking point for me is learning the skill of cooking from what we grow, especially keeping things interesting enough to not be tempted by town food. Would you consider making a video this winter sharing a big long master list of all the meals your family actually eats? The interesting ones but also all the "simple" or "mundane" ones? Recipes for all of them not necessarily needed, just a list for reference & ideas. I think it would be a really helpful video for a lot of people. Myself, at least.

Moving away from the consumerism habits naturally lends itself to building resilience. And what a sad place it must be to live where there is no season where leaves fall from the trees in abundance. Biosecurity is a big deal when you have other animals - some diseases can jump from one animal to another of a similar enough species. Whether that's parasites or diseases, I'm not knowledgable enough to speak about, but I definitely think it's important to only get healthy animals with the least medication possible. Happy Birthday to Jackson! Also, from one vet to another, Happy Veterans Day to Miah for tomorrow!

Hi Jess! I haven’t posted before but I have deeply enjoyed your content! I have a funny story about moving from the west coast to Colorado when I was 16. The first winter I was here I noticed all the grass turned brown, and in California when grass turns brown (at least in the Bay Area where I lived) it meant it was dead. So I mentioned to my friend “wow! You must spend so much money on landscaping each year!!” And he was very confused then told me grass goes dormant! Then comes back!! It totally surprised me! This was a big lesson for me to enter life with curiosity rather than judgement, just because I hadn’t come in contact with grass going dormant before doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I was thinking about the commenter who mentioned the trees dying! Entering life with curious eyes rather than critical can bring so much growth and healing to both parties! Thank you for everything you share! I learn so much and enjoy your lovely bits you share!

Jessica, I don’t know if you remember me. We are the family from north Arkansas that picked up the spotted goats a few months before you made your big move. My little girl kept coming in your house asking for a banana (I am so sorry about that still!) I remember the conversation we had about goat diseases and your concern with the goats we picked up. I just wanted to give you an update on them. I’ve been tempted to send pictures, but wanted respect your privacy. They ended up going to live with some wonderful friends of ours who have 90 acres they can free range on. And let me tell you those girls are SO spoiled. We recently moved back home to south Arkansas and were visiting our friends before our move. They look amazing, have had beautiful kids, and the owners treat them like they are their children. We ended up getting sheep and they wanted goats. We haven’t had dairy goats in a couple years now. I’ve wanted a milk cow for a long time. Now that we have moved back, I have found myself yearning for goats again and reconsidering the milk cow. I think there are just some of us that are goat lovers from the heart and I am definitely one of them. I laughed out loud when you said you wanted goats again. I said me too girl! I hope you enjoy your goats! And soon enough we will be looking for some in Arkansas! I’m still partial to the nubians! I always will be! Thank you for your generosity. The lives of those goats are a life some people wish they could live! And sometimes letting go for the better of something comes back around as a huge blessing later that we don’t see for a while.

This was helpful about the goat info and what to look for. Content about how to go about finding and buying animals for the homestead would be so helpful. I'm a city girl with no animal background and don't know how or where to start or the questions to ask to start with good stock. Thanks for all you do to educate us all who are trying to build a resilient life!

I wonder if the garden might look a little less desolate through the winter with some evergreen potted topiary. Completely impractical but I once saw a episode of Monty Don's where he talked about how to give a winter garden structure. I suppose your fences, and trellises and gates will help too.
Love you to pieces!!!! So happy for you! Love you and your family ❤❤❤
