Shadow's quiet "stop it" is what got me. I was in TEARS. That segment really humanized Shadow and i love it SO much.

You know they’re foreshadowing a lot of hurt coming our way. This is the Time Eater, who can erase things from the past, meaning that the life that Shadow said was taken from him has a chance to be undone. Maria can potentially come back. But Maria herself will convince Shadow to restore the timeline, meaning she’ll basically ask him to let her die.

You gotta love that "show, don't tell" where Pilot's eject system got jammed, it looks like Shadow comes to finish him off... And Shadow instead slams ejection system to save the man who was simply doing his job.

I feel like calling them "not friends" or "not a team" would always be incorrect. None of them, Shadow included, would ever openly admit to calling it a friendship or even a family...but for someone like Shadow, they do hold a very special place as the only individuals who have his full trust and respect and understand him, being the only allies that he can fully rely on for support and will be at his side no matter what. But yeah... those last moments of him picturing what could've been drifting into his mind. With him pushing those thoughts away to focus on the present. The emotion of someone who has moved on but will never forget what they cherished and lost. It will always be a part of him, but it won't consume him. This is how you humanize Shadow and make him feel like a complex character.

He was dreaming about the life he could have had with Maria on Earth. That's why he saw those visions and why he had to stop himself afterwards. He was in stasis for years, so he still hasn't gotten over her death. From his point of view, it was fairly recent. Yeah, this is the first piece of Sonic media ever to actually hit hard and make me emotional. And I've been a fan since I was a little kid (I'm 29 now)

SxSG is shaping up to be great. I also love the duality, where Sonic Generations story is arguably the most inconsequential nothing story in the franchise... and then Shadow Generations is shaping up to be arguably one of the most deep and important stories in the franchise. It's occurring to me that Shadow's actually got at least one thing in common with Percival De Rolo: his entire time on-screen, basically since SA2, he's been in the middle of a quiet but long-running nervous breakdown. Full-on existential crisis, since he knew about the Black Arms from the Ark days. But that "Stop it, that life is over, gotta focus on the job in front of me" is a hopeful sign that he might be trying to draw a line under it, and move forward. Those aren't memories he's revisiting in the shuttle. They're hopes that he used to have, and that he's now having to let go of.

...I think you people don't really understand the point of that meme. Yes, in universe that event was the worst thing to happen to Shadow. But from a writing stand point, it was the best. That backstory and how he deals with it is why he is such a beloved and frankly unique character in the Sonic franchise. Without Maria's death... Shadow just doesn't work.
