I’ve always thought the pinnacle of any bit of comedy is being able to make Barry Cryer laugh- the man who has seen it all and written for everyone.

I had the pleasure of meeting Barry many times, and he was as generous with his laughter at other peoples jokes, as he was with giving lines to other people. A fine man and a great writer.
@neilcurran15892 жыл бұрын
@@KBJ58 if as I suspect, you are the writer of the utter filth that permeated the radio 2 airwaves via Mr. Wogan then I for one would put you on a comedy pedestal with Barry. Your writing of Janet and John and Terry's timing and often breaking down when he saw what was coming next are a pure joy to the ears of every dirty minded listener. The fact that loads of people come onto KZbin and seek it out proves how much he is missed and how funny your material is. I hope you despair as much as I do about the pc brigade and their attitude to comedy. Britain was built on smut, innuendo and a saucy postcard type of humour and it's getting lost. Probably the only films I saw on telly over Christmas were the carry on films. I've seen them countless times but they're still funny. Anyway, a lovely tribute to Barry who's laugh was extremely infectious, especially on I'm sorry I haven't a clue. Keep up the good work if you're still working in the writing game - for fucks sake we need a laugh more than ever. All the best, Neil.
@KBJ582 жыл бұрын
@@neilcurran1589 Thank you for those kind words. I couldn't bring myself to write the J&J stories for anyone else, so the smut was curtailed when Terry died. I think I'd used up the few remaining shreds of innuendo left over from ISIHAC. But I have some great memories of those golden days. I do however, tip my hat to the great Ian Pattinson who wrote much of Humph's lines. Slightly bizarrely, he used to work in the Lloyds building too. Must be something in the water...

The Nevile Shute joke is without doubt one of the most perfect comedy moments in radio history. It’s form, delivery and reaction are just perfect. Everything comes together in millisecond timing. Also, the fact that this comedy moment would be almost impossible and too complicated to explain to , say, an American and yet, it’s genius is it’s simplicity. You cannot predict the punchline till it lands. I confess to never have heard of Mr Shute, but will never forget him now. The genius of Iain Pattison, the masterly delivery of Lyttleton, everything falls into place.
@markcampbell89503 жыл бұрын
100% agree. It's astonishingly puerile, brilliantly orchestrated, perfectly delivered and jaw-droppingly filthy. The waves of audience laughter, as the double meaning (no! surely not!) sinks in is almost as funny as the joke itself.

As he was by a canal and there was no traffic he hitched a lift on a passing barge. Grateful for the lift he gets talking to the barge owner who explained that he was on his way carrying ten tons of household waste. Approaching a lock, the lock keeper shouts to the barge captain as to what he was carrying. The reply was "Ten tons of shit and Lionel Blair!". This happened through several locks, when finally Lionel says to the barge captain "Is there any chance I could have top billing for a change......"

Hard to pick a favourite, but One Man and His Dog started the tears rolling so I'll go with that. Neville Shute kept them coming.

I love how the audience reactions become more 'knowing' over time.

Thank you for all the work you put into these compilations. May I suggest that your next project be The Complete Introductions --- from "You join us this week...." to "Let's meet the teams". Writer Iain Pattinson created a series of brilliant short descriptions of each town, some of which ended up as the book compilation "Lyttelton's Britain". Worthy of Wodehouse!

Thankyou for those nice words. My next projects are Mrs Trellis and Colin Sell...

The introduction to Nottingham that references Scunthorpe is an absolute gem amongst that genre.

Lionel is now older and has had to retire from 'give us a clue'. He is living in a well funded care home and is still active, but without any words used he still welcomes visitors entering via the back entrance...

I'd forgotten about these sections of the show! Truly comic genius, sadly from different times but superb listening all the same. The subtitles too add a new meaning!😁

RIP Iain Pattinson, the ISIHAC writer responsible for most of these (no, it wasn't Graeme Garden).

RIP Una Stubbs. I found out about Give Us a Clue through ISIHAC. I looked it up such that the jokes make more sense, it was a fun little show. There’s not much like that on telly anymore.

I used to enjoy watching it on afternoon telly. To be fair, Lionel Blair was very good at it - and very funny.

I was driving past junction 12 on the M1 when i heared the one (3:50) about twelve angry men. I genuinely had to pull over to the hard shoulder because i was laughing so much. Have never forgotten that. One of the funniest ISIHAC moments. Along with the one about Samantha going for an ice cream with her italian gentleman friend, nothing she likes more than to lick the nuts off a large neopolitan. Humph's delivery was pure genius.

@@caribstu You're a braver man than I, daring to drive with that programme on. I learnt with Brian Johnston's "Legover Incident" that music in the car is MUCH safer, and daren't think what Humph and Co might have done to me behind the wheel.
