You perfectly captured the feeling I have every time I drive by the Colosseum, St.Peter's, Roman ruins, the Pantheon etc. I was born and raised in Rome, I am so used to living in an historical city I don't even pay attention anymore, but then again, every time I find myself in those places I get an overwhelming feeling I cannot explain. I am so lucky to be able to witness such beauty and history every day, Rome is so old you get to see something from every century right around the corner and I cannot wrap my head around the fact that so many people have walked these streets, so many wars have happened, gigantic artists, composers, kings, queens, dictators, gladiators, emperors etc have walked where I walk. You can't put that feeling into words, you know it if you've felt it

40:35 My personal take on the Sistine Chapel is that is wasn’t painted in the way we see it today for educational purpose, because if you consider its location and context it’s in the Vatican, it’s most regular visitors are going to be the most devout members of the church who already know the stories and who believe. My interpretation of the Sistine is that it was a doubleing down of Christian artistic practic. This was during the time of a growing reformation movement, and there was a need for the church to reestablish its shaken legitimacy, and one of the ways in which they did this was through papal artistic patronage. That’s why you see the Sistine chapel and the building of Saint Peter’s commence around this time. Through art they are communicating both liturgical and political agendas. Michelangelo also didn’t lay on his back for the painting of the Sistine, there’s a poem by him where in the margin he doodles himself standing and painting the ceiling :P

Art specialist that works at an auction house here! Loved hearing your thoughts on the rightful provenance for art! It’s so interesting to hear perspectives from people ‘outside’ the art world, I find that art professionals can easily lose touch with reality. I just want to add my 2 cents and also pose a question: What exactly makes an artwork historically significant? Does it mean that the artwork has a visual technical strength? Or that the artist is well known in the course of history? Because a lot of the ‘significant’ art that you are referring to (Klimt,Michelangelo), are artists that are well known because of their privilege and ‘appropriate’ subject matters. They had opportunities in a society that favoured their art and themselves and were taken seriously. I won’t get into this more, but it is important to think about this when considering the value of an artwork (which is an ENTIRELY different conversation). Secondly, I do want to mention that most private collectors of ‘historically significant’ art, display their works publicly. Whether it be in museums or public places. I must mention that most of the clients who purchase these high value pieces are in fact museums themselves. But then again, what makes these artworks so special when there are hundreds and thousands of artists from those eras who might have made even more ‘historically significant’ artworks according to the standards society has set. It is important to remember that art is subjective. What may be valuable to someone can be trash to another. Art is so arbitrary and I struggle to define it even after an MFA and 5 years art world work experience. There is so much that I don’t know, but I am open to different perspectives!

36:59 as a linguist i would say there is a 'wrong' way of speaking, but it's only when your audience (given they speak the same language) doesn't understand what you're trying to say. in that context you would have to 'correct' yourself by adjusting your words so your point comes across. if the audience understands you, you're good imo, and "me and my mom" as the subject clause of a sentence is a language variation that everyone understands and feels natural to a lot of English speakers. so you're good!

MAD respect for Brittany talking about sociolinguistics and getting frustrated when people correct other people's way of speaking. I'm from the south, and I got so annoyed with my linguistics classmates in college because they would speak so pretentiously to other students who weren't studying linguistics as if they were more intelligent for speaking a certain way. Then, the professor began a unit on dialects, creoles, pidgins, etc., and she pointed out that many of the things they were phasing out of their own vernacular or correcting other people about were actually grammatically correct in context. We talked about how correcting people and speaking in an intentionally pretentious way just serves to create division, which is the opposite of the purpose of communication and language in the first place. Of course, there is certainly value in having shared rules that help us be consistent and understand each other, but to assume that someone else's way of speaking is automatically incorrect because they speak differently than you often stems from classism, racism, and other forms of injustice.

Literally keep telling people about this !! We're raised to work work work and many Americans feel content never leaving their bubbles (or don't have the means to). We get caught up in it all; work, relationships, money, etc (not invalidating these very real issues) and it feels like things just get deeper and deeper. I wish everyone could have the chance to experience what it's like to be in another world for even just a brief moment. To see that the world is so much more than the 20 mile radius of our daily life. I get to regularly visit family in Thailand and it always feels like I'm in another reality. I get a reminder that life is so much more than the daily stresses I feel back home, and that life CAN BE so much more. It helps me see things from a bigger picture. It's also just so meaningful to learn about what normal life is for people on the other side of the globe and to find humor in our similarities and differences. What snacks people grow up with, what they do after school, what sounds do they hear at night when they close their eyes; to connect with people you would never regularly meet and gain perspective. I feel like going somewhere else gives me a moment to take a breath and remember that the world continues to move around the little things.

55:47 leaving my hometown every weekend and just going to Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Sequoia is such a different experience (yes I live in LA). Going from a place where you’ve grown up to a place that is full of new experiences and nature is just so relaxing and literally makes my mood 10x better. So taurine actually helps me feel energized in a way that caffeine typically doesn't.

I like watching twitch streamers but mostly smaller ones. The difference between your experience on twitch depending on whether you watch streamers with tens of thousands of viewers vs streamers at less than a thousand viewers is MONUMENTAL. Not to say there aren’t big streamers worth watching but it’s a very different experience

we are reading beloved in my english class right now, a book which is currently being banned in multiple states (btw which is ironic considering toni morrison won the nobel prize for that book). it is a very difficult book to read, but it is so incredibly important to read. the topics it deals with are heavy on their own, but it’s so much more knowing that this book is based upon what black americans had to experience during slavery and after its abolition. like you said, it is so incredibly important to learn about slavery and other dark parts of history. it’s the age-old saying, if history is not taught, we are doomed to repeat it.

OMG I loved the art history part of this episode! I got to go to Austria for a little bit to study abroad and I went to the Belvedere Palace Museum that houses Klimt's the kiss and many of his other works. It was fantastic and a really large piece of art. They had a bunch of Monet's and Van Gogh's at this museum as well. I guess Klimt was very inspired by both of them and you can see it some of his other paintings. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend going.

Legit though the art history segment was fascinating and sobering and I was hanging onto every word. I've been to Auschwitz and there are no words, but it's so extremely important to remember our world history and pay respects. Your podcasts are a rollercoaster and I'm normally cry-laughing out of hilarity, but I enjoy your 'serious' tangents and knowledge and insights just as much!

I love your take on touring paintings. I love love LOVE caravaggio and baroque style in general. While in Minnesota (I’m from Nebraska), I went to their art institute and out of some miracle, his painting Judith Beheading Holofernes had been on display, the original painting from Italy. I was so so so happy
