Unreal is overkill and Godot is under kill. That still leaves Unity as the best engine for small developers who have already invested years of commitment in using the product. Unfortunately, corporations are driven by the bottom line and not altruistic objectives.

This is a very odd video. I am not a Dev but a gamer. I dont have a dog in this fight personally but... I have 3 gaming PCs, gaming laptop, 4 Steamdecks, Asus ROG Ally.(family of gamers). I frequently wipe and reload OS's and reinstall my games. I will now cost the devs countless install charges when I purchased their game years ago. I am 1 household with a family who games. Multiply this out over 10's of thousands of users and you can see this being punishing to devs and this is for games I already purchases so there are no after sale revenue but the dev is on the hook for the installs. There are grumblings that devs will pull their products from storefronts to avoid the cost which WILL AFFECT CUSTOMERS> And this did not even count the "high seas" versions out there and there being zero way to detect that. Otherwise piracy would have been stamped out years ago. This will now affect sales(discounts) of games, where you can wrack up a bunch of purchases but eat the cost in steam fees(30%), publisher costs(??), and the complete unknown of install fees over the years. I dont think this should be championed as good thing for Unity whether you chose to stay or not. You are punished for success, strong armed into the pro version, and penalized for terms you didn't agree to when you started working on a project. And now you are hoping there are no further changes but they released an FAQ that states they will reevaluated the pricing structure every year. You may be a captive audience at this point. Best of luck to anyone who stays with this unreliable partner that is Unity.

@@RootGames Unfortunately this is not the way the system works. Unity is not a worker owned co-op where each of those 8k people get to have a voice It really is just the CEO and the board. They are the only ones who have the power to make decisions. You are correct to say that the Unity employees are on the side of the developers. However the only thing they can do is go along with the changes or quit, They won't fight back against the changes and stop the CEO from going through with it. You say that Unity will 'rise again" but you don't say in what way, They permanently destroyed the trust they had with Indie devs. Then they said companies like microsoft were going to pay the price when it comes to bundles, (I guarantee you they will be getting lots of emails from lawyers over that one). Honestly at this point, Unity has only 2 options. 1. Pull the plug and declare bankruptcy. 2. Transition from being a company that makes a game engine that anyone can use, to being a company that only offers it's services to other multimillion dollar companies.

@@bannedaccount586i can understand if devs continue using it for their current development, but they should switch after these come out. as a potential customer of those devs, using unity make them look weak minded, to be fair. i will 100% check each game that i buy if their development process started before the runtime fee announcement, or later. those before still get support - they effectively didnt know what would happen. but those who still continue to support unity through developing with it *after* wont see any support at all.

@@Ballpython50001 great points and based as well. I work a lot with public companies, even my workplace controls some of these public companies. when it comes to decision making, the 8k Unity employees can do nothing...the company's board serve the shareholders and that's it. Even if 200k is quite a lot for some indie developers, there is a catch. It is still not clear how they're going to filter out pirated versions and as the results, they can be counted as well, and suddenly your game "makes" more than 200k in their eyes, so they're going to charge you! I remember in 2013, the Xbox team also made a bad decision. During E3, they announced that the Xbox One would need to be always online, and players could even order pizza with this console. They introduced Kinect and seemed to be focusing on features other than the games themselves. This decision was met with huge backlash from gamers, and many said they wouldn't buy the Xbox One and would go to buy PlayStation 4 instead, and of course, most gamers really did that. Eventually, the Xbox team realized they had made a mistake. They publicly apologized, made significant changes to their approach, and acquired some very good game studios. Now, they have become quite successful. This example shows that any company can make mistakes. What's crucial is how they respond to critical feedback. I'm happy to see that they are listening and taking steps to regain the community's trust.

Also, using Unity as a tool is fine, but I think the community in general should take a harsh stance against this kind of move because it tends to get contagious with other companies. So there's a lot of people who wish to move onto something else from Unity, and I'm definitely in the same camp. But it's also interesting to see people being vocal about staying. The argument about "I'm never going to reach the threshold" is thrown around a lot, but it's not really an argument, because the problem isn't necessarily the fee itself, but instead, that Unity Technologies broke their trust with many people in the industry by suddenly aggressively changing the "rules of the game", deleted their ToS repo and its history, then and replaced it with a new one, removed a subscription tier and automatically charged people for a more expensive one, and then as a cherry on top, their "Apology" sound like just another "We're sorry You're experiencing these feelings". People aren't leaving Unity because Unity is a bad engine or because they don't want to pay. They just don't want to be bossed around like this and they don't want to be afraid that tomorrow morning they'll wake up and realize that their 5+ year project is in danger. Anyway, nice video! like I said, it's interesting to hear other opinions. Keep it up!

Basically its anti indie campaign .... when most of people dont get very much affected by these changes they will start using unity again and for that they will slightly change policies so peoples cant catch there real agenda ...but after long time when the game engine will become more advance and for indie developers it will be hard to create such level of games without these engines they will put this conditions again but they will do it slowly increasing step by step in future. Secondly if we invest a long time in game development and after long success and failure cycle in game development when we finally make a really good game that actually sales a lot and which will be the game of fortune for the developer after stuggling for years .this policy will swipe all our money and effort in so much extends that instead of rising as an indie company we will just go bankrupt . In shortly they are just preparing employees in large amount and if some group of people make some good stuff that really stand against the AAA game studios they will cut indie studios wings in such way they will not rise as a company and these talent sooner or later this developer will work in this big AAA studio as employee

You underestimate the skill that's required to make a good game. It doesn't matter if a game is photorealistically raytraced if it's boring to interact with. Making a game that's fun to interact with is where the profits really come from. Take a look at Dwarf Fortress... it's graphics are dogsh*t, and nevertheless has sold 600,000 copies on steam.

And that's how values die, and bad decisions are rewarded. Just sell your soul for convenience and bit of money, it's that easy.

looks like you are staying with unity bc for you its not convenient to change and thats ok, ppl need to pay the bills But remember that the comunity had the devs back, not unity. Maybe a position like "i know unity messed up but unfortunately, the change would affect me too much so i all i can do is hope for the best for everyone" would be better than "yeah... it doesnt affect me so, whatever"

no, its a bad idea to stay with them because they'll do something just as bad and they can't be trusted.. that's like a cheating ex asking to take her back... you don't.

Wise decision! Majority of unity developers have probably tons of assets, are very familar with the engine and will never hit the 200k/1M threshold, so there is no reason to switch the engine.

Cool, but since I have no relationship with Unity, yet they will know when I install their games via mandatory telemetry, I will not be installing your game after you stick with Unity. No biggie, it's your life. But its my data.

If you want to stay you may only used Unity engine for demonstration and demonstration only. This is the only way to safely avoid the dev fee.

Finally! After a week of a whole entire nonsense drama, over a change that will not affect more than the 10% of Unity developers, i hear some wise words. I stay too. I will not hear any other nonsese complain about it.

The thing about a mob of angry people is that they never realize they are a mob of angry people. The discord out of the developer community has been mostly fear based and irrational. I'm sticking with Unity.
