A lot of people did. The average citizen out there doesn't have a whole lot of imagination and discernment when it comes to artistic expression as subtle and strange as this movie. I wasn't sure what to make of it until I had seen it a couple times. It's brilliant.

How did they show this in the film? Joaquin clearly broke character when he laughed and agreed that it was "pretty funny!" And he had to walk out because he messed up. It didn't make sense. This obviously wasn't a real documentary and they could have taken this again. It is a scripted movie after all.

Check out "You Were Never Really Here" - a recent film where he has a similar look but plays a hitman/fixer. Really intense, disturbing, but also surprisingly moving film.

It’s acting. It was a film disguised as a documentary AKA a mockumentary. It’s a pretty amazing film that was super misunderstood when it came out.

Yeah. It's called "I'm Still Here" it came out about a decade ago. The film in itself was not as good as the flair Joaquin Phoenix caused online at the time, when ppl thought it was real and posting cellphone video footage of him at his so called "concerts" falling off stage and fighting with ppl in the crowds etc. It got the internet really buzzing for a while. Everyone was saying like "wth happened to this guy?!". Either way, it's worth checking out but to its really not that special to be honest. As i wrote the real magic was on the internet with that stuff at the time.

Nah it's not, Casey Affleck directed the movie, Ben Afflecks brother, and Casey talked about when Joaquin would break character cause he's think the cameras were off or not on him, and Casey would get mad and Joaquin would be laughing too hard he'd have to leave the room for a bit

No sería extraño ni cuestionable que tuviera una crisis similar en algún momento,todos sabemos su dolorosa historia y sólo Dios y él saben lo que guarda por dentro pero lo que me lleva a pensar q realmente fué actuado es que por ej, cuando consume... después que dejó el personaje ya está,no había rasgos de eso en él y eso es algo que no es así,nadie deja y se recupera de un día al otro...
