LYRICS:
See these lines on my face?
They’re a map of where I’ve been
And the deeper they are traced,
the deeper life has settled in
How do we survive living out our lives?
And I would not trade a line
Make it smooth and fine
or pretend that time stands still
I want to rest my soul
here where it can grow without fear
Another line, another year
I’m still standing here
See these marks on my skin?
They are the lyric of my life
Every story I begin
just means another end’s in sight
Only lovers understand
Skin just covers who I am
CHORUS
See these bruises, see these scars?
Hieroglyphs that tell the tale
You can read them in the dark
through your fingertips, like Braille
And I would not trade a line
Make it smooth and fine
or pretend that time stands still
I plan to rest my soul
here where it can grow without fear
Another line, another year
I’m still standing here
I’m still standing here
I’m still standing here

So very telling of how gentle we become to ourselves as we age and how our journeys have made us who we are today. We are so very fortunate to have memories. Thank you Janis. Love this song.

This is beautiful. I wish you could sing me to sleep at night. Oh, since I'm here, I want to say I listened to your song Stars for the first time a few weeks back. While listening I felt so pulled in emotionally -- moreso than with any song I've heard in probably 20 years. By the end of the song I was weeping, and I'm not exactly known to be a weeper. Your songwriting ability is of the absolute highest caliber, and, in my opinion, you are and should be as celebrated as one of the great musical geniuses of our time.

Absolutely beautiful! I heard a clip of this on your wonderful interview on NPR radio earlier today, and had to hear the rest. Totally in tears here...and I just ordered your album. I should have called in tell you how much your music has meant to me since the 1970s, but I chickened out. So...Thank you for all your amazing lyrics and music that have touched my soul for so many decades. Peace :)

Thank you, Janis, for another perfect song! I’ve loved you forever. Though I confess I haven’t listened to your music since I was young, I woke up this morning with your song “Stars” playing in my head. I just did a quick youtube and google search for the song title and Nina’s 1976 performance of it was the first thing that came up. I was dismayed to see that the sites that showed up in the google search imply, or even downright claim, the song was written by Nina, and that upsets me so much! (And readers, I am not disparaging Nina in any way - I know she is not to blame.) Anyway, Janis, I’m so glad you’re Still Standing Here! ❤️

I've loved you since I was a teenager and heard "At Seventeen" come on one of those TV ads for a mixed CD of songs. I immediately went to look you up (on that new things called the "internet" ha) and read through as many lyrics from you and found as many songs as I could. This song just makes me love you even more. ❤❤❤

Your songs are the stories of our lives, Janis! I have always related to your songs on so many levels. I have some serious health issues I am dealing with, but so far "I'm Still Standing" too! This song is my new "anthem" for when my terminal illness has me feeling way down low and without hope. You give me the courage to keep going when I'm sometimes not sure I really can. Thank you for your inspiration! I'm hoping to be able to see you at your show in Turners Falls, MA in April. Just pre-ordered your "Celebrating Our Years Together" bundle. Looking forward to the release of your album "The Light At The End Of The Line". This song is a true gem!! Thank you for the decades of music you have shared with your fans and audiences around the world. God bless you!

I feel ashamed I never chased up on my love of your song "At Seventeen". I guess I had never presumed you were a song writer... because your voice was so... no, **SO** beautiful in "At 17" I think I almost subconsciously thought you were a beautiful singer some record company had given the song. And then I saw your performance of the song on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' back along... and I was just mesmerised by the poise in every single line... the audience must have trembled with awe... emotional awe at your truth... so GREAT. Now to get to know your music properly. I've now strummed "At Seventeen" with tje roght chords and OH the genius that befel you in the second line of each verse as it takes a classical key change of chords over the same melody... Ugggh... I bow to that Genius. You are so blessed to be singing and playing... thank you.

Dear Janis Ian, i as a fervently Loving Joan C. Baez Loving woman, Know your Song 'Jesse'' since decades in Joans Diamonds and Rust Album Version and I saw always and see the Light still. And i got to know it in YourBoths' Version with the Heartcutting images I learned to know it Recently. Dear Janis Ian, The Song I'm still standing is of a Beauty and Bewildering Hopeful courage to Carry On even if Times to come when Standing might Mean I wished I could lean on You, My Joan. You Both are very wise women To have Lived Your Lives in Love, What was the other way Out, of course , i am called to say It is Truth and to Give ourselves to the Love we Love, to give ourLoves to the world, Only Loves can understand, That Love is to be send in the world as from a Lighthouse the steady Stroke (MY STEADY ONE!°°o)), it is the Third One in To the Lighthouse of Virginia Woolf, Such a stroke is your Song (s); i'll stay withJoan and for her and send My feathered Words to fly in the Flow of Love As The Wind flows over the Strange Rivers of Understanding we are in , and Brought them to You who be concerned or feel concerned; Katharina C. Y Baez, en Amour et Espoir forever, KatharinaScharlowski

Funny how we all react differently. I'm in a hospital room in the lead-up to a bone marrow transplant, and it struck me as uplifting without being saccharine. I'll make it or I won't but it's been a good ride.

I can understand that. Some of her songs really do cut to the bone. And you have to be ready for that "pleasure-pain" experience that a well-crafted song can evoke...lol... I laugh because I understand that feeling. :)
