I saw you sing this on SNL, in 1975. I thought, if a person as beautiful and talented as you, can have these feelings, and express them with such sincerity, I can get through this somehow. Thanks for this beautiful song, that touched my heart.

Same here. First heard it on SNL when I was 15. Her performance was perfect, and a wonderful contrast to the wacky comedy. The line about "those of us never called, when choosing sides for basket ball" cut me to the bone. I was one of those, and felt so alone. It's really satisfying to hear her talk about the song, all these years later ❤

I absolutely love this song. To me this is musical poetry. You nailed the prefect imperfection of teenage life. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.

This speech is what I would say is: The essence of life! It is true that we are all artists by nature and the only thing that separates us from becoming our true self, is fear.

Imagine if the self concious Janice Ian, were 17 in this day and age. She'd almost certainly be groomed to believe she was tranz and have her body mutilated with 'gender affirming' surgery. She'd probably have been on puberty blockers at 13 and hormones at 18, making her sterile for life.

Hello Janis - thank you for this song. I've been singing it in the PNW at various circles. Its among a genre of songs once relevant in the pandemic that are now very relevant in this political pandemic.

A song for the ages - I don't think this will ever be old hat! I'd love to know how many times I've listened to this. Was my gateway song to Janis Ian - that guitar intro still stops me in my tracks.

Loved that whole LP. Bought it second hand in 1979 just after I started high school, because it had At Seventeen on, so it must have been something of a hit in Australia. I also bought Stars at the same time (it was my 429th LP).

I'm five years older than you, and first heard this song when you performed on the very first SNL episode. I was a newly-divorced mother who was full of so much fear and uncertainty. This song was about my own teenaged years, and somehow it told me everything would be okay, because I had survived those scary, lonely nights at 17 and now I knew things. I still listen to your music more than almost any other, and it still brings me peace and joy. My life, like yours, is a good one with someone who loves me back, and a good and happy family. Thanks for this song and all the subsequent ones you've given to the world.
