They prosecuted a woman with learning difficulties who had no control of her finances when the council department who handled them forgot to renew her licence. The council pled guilty on her behalf even though it was their mistake!

I get the letters once a month and have done for many years. I simply laugh at them because I know they are total nonsense, but so many are frightened by these ridiculous bully tactics. We absolutely need to get the message out there that these letters are complete nonsense and can be safely ignored. The only way people can get prosecuted for not having a TV license is if they engage with these people on the doorstep. Many of the the people who have been prosecuted genuinely do not need a TV license (they do not watch or record live TV or use BBC iPlayer). If you do get a visit you simply ask who they are (they may or may not identify themselves) and say no thank you and close the door. Give them absolutely no information. Do not confirm that you live there. Do not give them your name. These "enforcement officers" have no authority and and are nothing more than salespeople and can only get information from you if you voluntarily give it to them. You are under absolutely no obligation to engage with these people nor do you have any reason to. I personally believe that video doorbells are a great idea also to protect yourself if you do get a visit.

@@davecooper3238Good for you. I’m sure then that as a lot of people decide to cancel their licences, *you* will be more than happy to pay double or even treble the current cost of your licence. Just remember that the majority of TV Licence monies go on salaries and payments to pension funds and, in a lot of cases, those payments are eye wateringly high. BTW, I’ve worked as a Secretary for a firm of Independent Financial Advisers and have seen just how much money is paid to these people.

If I do not comply they will start the increasingly threatening letter route. I haven't had a TV for 30 odd years (and don't watch TV online, on my phone, etc). I keep receiving the threatening letters, which go straight into the bin. I would love them to actually send people to visit me, rather than just threatening me with it, so I can send them on their way with their tails between their legs. The letters go round in circles - announcing they are "investigating" me, threatening a visit and so on - before starting the cycle again.
