I love the unspoken implication that Lore took over the Pakled ship and killed their crew. He mentions them by name, and he is wearing Pakled clothing, but knowing Lore, it is safe to assume that he did not form an amicable partnership with them. The sensors aboard the Enterprise did not detect any life signs on Lore's ship when he arrived...

I know in the end he still turned on them, but I like to believe that just for a little bit, Lore's reaction at 2:08 - 2:39 is genuine. Also, it's a damn shame Star Trek was (unofficially) banned from winning Emmy's. Brent Spiner 100% deserved all the awards for this episodes performance.

@@elisabethschmerzler963 Basically yes, it was considered a "cult show", so they never considered it for nominations or thought it was "worthy" of it. Lore's behavior is consistent with that of a sociopath, even in this moment of concern for his father's health. To Lore, Soong is a resource, an occasionally-useful person who isn't of value at the moment, but might be someday. More importantly, Soong is "his"; in Lore's narcissistic mind, Soong belongs to him, and he can leverage that connection whenever he wants to do so. Soong initially doesn't interest him, and isn't offering him anything, so he is about to leave without a second thought. But when Soong reveals that he is dying, that news shocks him. To a person with personality disorders like Lore, Soong is telling him that he will soon lose access to this unique resource. Soong is being taken away from him, and the first stage of grief at suffering any major loss is denial, which is what he displays here. He doesn't love Soong as a father, and he doesn't respect Soong as a human; he acts like a spoiled child who has broken a toy during a tantrum.

One thing this episode did that was very excellent and unique, was show a vulnerable side to Lore. It really fleshed him out as a character. He was still evil but different. It was excellent. He became less the "evil" side of Data (Although even that, I saw a lot of good acting and dialogue in the episode "Datalore") and more an emotionally/mentally unstable child that felt rejected but still loved his father.

Data had no empathy. Just reason and logic. Yet, he never exhibited antisocial behavior. You would think that Lore's emotions and empathy would prevent him from doing evil. Imagine your Dad deciding you're a failure putting you into a coma and abandoning you, leaving you in a coma to rot. You'd be resentful too. Edit: Almost forgot You're then awoken years later to find that your Dad happily moved on with his life essentially forgot you ever existed and replaced you with another that he deemed better.

@@FantomMisfit But why would emotions override his reason? Is that a design fault? And why not destroy Lore instead of just temporarily take it apart? I always hated that Lore was inferior to Data despite the fact that he could do everything Data could + humor, empathy and all the emotions. There is no explanation given for Lore's evil. We can only speculate. Could it be that.. the emotion chip was incapable of generating guilt? So, Lore could feel a ton of things, except remorse, guilt, shame etc? Could it be that those emotions eluded Dr. Sung?
@FantomMisfit
@FantomMisfit Ай бұрын
@@humanrightsadvocate Emotions override logic in people all the time. Lore sees organics as inferior and thus is able to justify his bad behavior as well as the fact that organics (in his eyes) hated him because he was different which indirectly caused him to be disassembled so he also developed a hatred and contempt toward them. When people have wronged you it's easy to justify doing bad things back. The chip only made him more phychotic and unstable (which Soong warns him of) Edit: And to add insult to injury after abandoning you he made another kid to replace you deemed him better than you and happily moved on with his life and forgot you even existed. Lore never really got a fair chance. Data is the only one who treated Lore like a person and not a "thing" it does kind of partly explain why he wanted Data to stay with him. Lore was definitely the bad guy but it wasn't just "Wahahaha I'm evil" there's a clear series of events that caused it and it all started by Soong not recognizing that what he created was not just a machine. (Which I think is kind of Ironic) it wasn't Lore that was defective it was Soong that failed him as a father which he didn't repeat with Data (some small part of him knew he had done Lore wrong)
@humanrightsadvocate
@humanrightsadvocate Ай бұрын
@@FantomMisfit But, we cannot call a machine "bad" or "evil". Lore acted according to his programming. In fact, I would argue that the behavior of both Lore and Data was inevitable, as it was the output of a computation. So, the antisocial behavior of Lore can only be attributed to a design flaw.
