Having a crew member with superhuman strength would just make that being a no-brainer to have with you at all times if you were the captain. I remember the first time watching reruns of ToS and seeing Kirk battle a drugged up Spock and learning how super strong Vulcans were. Later I saw the episode when Kirk and Khan fight and wondered why Kirk didn't just get Spock to jump in there and fight him. I picture Kirk yelling "Kick his ass, Spock" and jumping in now and again to land a sucker punch (or karate chop) on Khan.

He could speak and alien language fluently and at a level possibly higher than one of it's most intelligent scientists. I could see losing your memory of who you are... But when you retain language, don't you also retain the general meaning of words (only losing emotional or personal meanings and connections?) If he couldn't READ Radioactive, then I wouldn't question why he didn't just know what the word was. Even if you argue his subconscious/sub-routines where enforcing the prime directive and preventing him from giving these people the advanced knowledge of Radiation physics... He still taught that woman about particle physics at a high level and discussed cellular biology with such certainty that he clearly retained some very specific knowledge, even if he was "rediscovering" it. In the end, the only thing that sells it is that Data's character is painfully unwilling to draw conclusions or speculate on things. He only offers hypothesis when it's likely correct. This shows in many episodes.

Everyone seems to be bagging TNG. I have been (re)watching it sequentially, on Season 7 now. The show is as good as I remember - so what if the effects are cheesy and dated by todays' standards - my answer to that is "so what". We have all played video games or seen a movie with amazing effects/cgi/graphics, but they are wasted because the story sucks. What makes TNG great is the stories and development of all the main characters as the series progresses. Data is by far the funniest character because of his innocence and he is so literal. Take a step back and enjoy it for what it is.

While she makes some tremendous leaps in logic (and obviously has an incomplete understanding of the scientific method), the scientist's ideas are reasonably sound in some respects. She correctly dismisses supernatural explanations for his nature, and also correctly realizes that his condition is not the result of a physical ailment of some kind. And while her SPECIFIC conclusion is very suspect (I doubt very much that she has any good reason to randomly assume he comes from a hereto undiscovered race of people no one has ever seen or heard of), her insistence that there is a physical reason for his appearance (ie, an adaption to an environment) is pretty sound thinking.

For what can only be a hypothesis, she does sound awfully sure of it. It would've helped, if they had inserted allusions to known ruins of a past civilization in the mountains or some actual archaeology into her dialogue. Those could've been some believable ways to show how she came to that conclusion. Other explanations I've thought of about why she presents her hypothesis, as if it were a fact: She might be a quack, just looking for the next biggest possible scoop with which to impress her town/nation/world. Or maybe, in light of how new the scientific method seems to be to that society, those that jump on the bandwagon are just so awfully excited about all the wondrous things they can learn about now, that they forgo due scientific rigour in their thinking, believing their hypothesis to be true, because it would be sooo cool and/or useful if it were! XD We've seen both examples during our scientific history, too. Particulary between the 19th and early 20th century. There was a short period of time, when it was chic for people to subscribe to certain trendy theories to discuss in salons and clubs, and you had lots of quacks to go around, capitalizing on these vibes, building fanbases (somehow, this sounds eerily familiar, currently). Symme's hollow earth theory (strong enough during the mid-1800s to get the US Congress involved) and Hörbiger's glacial cosmogeny (1913) are two examples from that time, off the top of my head.

IIRC the Vikings being strong had more to do with their diet than the weather. If anything it was despite the weather. They ate cod-liver oil, which was one of the few foods that provided enough vitamin D to avoid rickets while living in norther Europe.

The White Skin and Blonde hair is actually a Human mutation. Because humans get bulk of their vitamin D via sun, darker skin produces less vitamin D. So over time, the Nordic races evolved into white skinned fair haired mutants to survive in the sunless north. Little more than a science curiousity. But I find it hilarious that white supremacists talking about "Pure race" are actually fixated on HUMAN MUTANTS. ROFL.

@Jay Wulf Actually Northern Sweden is rarely ever dark. In fact, the Arctic circle tends to have 24 hour daylight in the summer, & 24 hour night in the winter, so I dunno where you get your theory about them being mutants, or being blonde, & fair skinned a result of their lands being constantly dark. It's one thing to mock the whole master race metality, but at least educate yourself a bit on the real world biology, & geography of the Nordic races. Also it's called evolutionary adaptation not a mutation. In fact here's the definition of mutation followed by evolutionary adaptation for you since you clearly need the lesson. A Mutation occurs when a DNA gene is damaged or changed in such a way as to alter the genetic message carried by that gene. A Mutagen is an agent of substance that can bring about a permanent alteration to the physical composition of a DNA gene such that the genetic message is changed. Evolutionary adaptation, or simply adaptation, is the adjustment of organisms to their environment in order to improve their chances at survival in that environment. Remember that Data was built to resemble living organic humans, with a pulse, and hair growth, and the ability to consume food. To a pre industrial society there would be no question he was a living being. Hell if he was here today it would be pretty difficult to tell he was a machine without another machine to detect it. The doctor made her best guess based on her knowledge and went with it seeing how he wasn't impaired in any real way.

Usually, I don't succeed and just have to live with the confusion.

From someone who has lived with these kinds of scenarios for 34 years, even when you finally get enough information to understand all the details of those interactions and you finally know why...It doesn't feel much better than the confusion. The truths you will eventually learn about being different will only fill you with disgust and resentment. Because you finally understand that there really is nothing wrong with the way you do things. It isn't alarming or even all that inappropriate I'm sure. Because it's different and unexpected, that's the only reason people react that way. And after you've worked so hard to understand, and lived with the unsatisfying confusion for so long, to find that these people will never look outside of their own perspective and will vilify you for your differences is SO REVOLTING. Trust me, having the answer sucks. It makes you realize you are an outsider in a world where difference is a disadvantage. The details are fairly insignificant. This world....people...are like that. Cast out those who are hard to understand. It is a bitter Truth to discover and even more bitter to live with when you know the Truth.

I kind of saw this episode before almost everybody else. The Paramount team brought the finished tapes to Glasgow, and showed them in a darkened room where everyone was sworn to secrecy. Thankfully before the age of the internet and social media, so the storylines wouldn’t be easy to share and we didn’t have recording devices that could fit into your pocket.
