I have found that flint sharp,powder dry and frizzen warm. The colder the frizzen gets the harder it is to pull sparks. Humidity to will sweat the frizzen and act as a lubricant. I wipe mine down often with a cloth. To warm it and dry it.

I just recently put together a Kibler Colonial American Longrifle 54-caliber And I couldn't be happier. I'm 6'4" and wish I had about 1" more length of pull, I still can't really complain. I've only shot it at 50 yards, but four out of five shots touching is fantastic. That is using 95 gr. Of Goex ffg in the barrel and the same powder in the pan. The lock time is great, I really can't tell the difference between it and a custom-made hawken 54-caliber percussion rifle I have. The hawken was made in the 70s, I believe, from a St Louis hawken parts kit, though I can't verify that. A heavy 36" barrel and looking through much literature, it appears to be a quality replica. I can shoot Clover Leaf groups with it a 50 yards, too, if I do my part. I absolutely love these high-quality traditional muzzleloaders. I just wanted to add that the story behind the hawken was it was built by a preacher/gun maker in Tennessee. Again no way to verify that as there's no marking anywhere on the rifle.

I built a .54 rifle with pretty much exactly the same specs as your old faithful. 36" straight octagon barrel, 1' across the flats. It's a forward heavy son of a gun, even for me in my (very) late 30's. I'm mulling around boring out a bit of the stock to add a few ounces of melted lead back there to move the center of gravity backward a bit

Good to see you T23! As one mountain man to the other I have to say I miss home. My father is spread overlooking the southern end of the centennial Valley of the snowy range, and think of the first bugling bull he seen. Today just viewing this video my thoughts was up the Hamms fork, having this conversation over a fire with hot pot of coffee. Waaahhh let's slow roast up some fatted hump rib and sit a spell. This year I hunted archery, and rifle season using a walking stick to steady myself. Didn't make out muzzleloader for season at all. Even with my poor vision the woods seemed pretty small. This year I recieved a blessings in the youth that I was able to introduce to the world of the charcoal. Seems I'm still pretty good at raising a smile and pass on something I love so dear. I also enjoyed your video. I’ve been away from black powder guns for a while now and plan on getting back into it. I’m looking at the Kibler SMR in 45. Not sure my skills are still sharp enough to do one justice. If you have a change of mind and would sell your 45, please let me know. I love how you did yours. God bless and looking forward to more videos. I’m in SW Oklahoma.

My first rifle and pistol were percussion .45 Black powder CVAs. I used to shoot .45 cal lee maxie ball in the 1 in 56 twist barrels. The pistol I used a short base maxie ball that weighed 454gr and in the rifle i used the long base maxie ball 470gr (all home cast). Pistol I used 30 gr Pyrodex 3fg hunting target load. In the rifle i used 75 gr Pyrodex R/S 2fg powder. Number #11 caps. That all being said i wanted to say that if you use .440 rb (round balls) you will be very disappointed in the .45 cal performance overall. My rifle, let alone the pistol was accurate, but at the ranges you suggest to shoot at 100 yards leaves the .440 rb lacking in penetration. With the Maxie balls being over130 grains heavier than the .440 rb , it made a noticeable difference. I believe you are going to discover what many others before you have. "You stand to wound a dear more often with the .45 and have to chase them for miles, than you will with the .54". --Griz-- *I am not saying you cant hunt deer with the .45.* Modern inline .45s don't count. They are not shooting round balls, but copper plated conical bullets with up to 3 times the max powder charge compared to your flintlock or percussion rifles. *What i am saying is that if you are not totally on target with your shot and even if you are, you stand to be chasing after more big game...*

Good morning sir. I just stumbled across your channel and love your content, (shooting and devotional). As I was watching I discovered that you’re somewhat in my neck of the woods. I live south of Stillwater, OK near Carney. I just recently purchased a Kibler Woodsrunner in .45 cal. I’m not progressing as fast as I’d like, but it’s mainly due to other priorities at the moment. I built my first muzzle loader (a pistol) from a CVA kit advertised in the back of a Field and Stream for $19. Next was a .45 Thompson Center Hawkin kit purchased for $125. That got put aside for several decades but I’m trying to get back in it and even want to do some early encampments and rendezvous, develop an early persona etc. I’m even toying with the idea of building my own primitive camp. Keep up the great and needed content. Maybe someday we’ll get to fellowship, shoot and break bread.

At 74 I feel your pain. fairly new to BP and built a Hawkins 50 percussion. I find it to be as accurate as I am and pretty darn dependable. It is minute of 2 liter soda at 110 yards reliably.

You will find that as you get older you have to make some allowances for the muscle loss that many of us experience as we age. You might try trimming a few inches of barrel off that 36" barrel. Say trim her back to 32" and see if it handles better for you. Another thing you might try is dropping a new barrel in it of a larger bore size. Say go from 50 to 54 or 54 to 58 to trim a couple of pounds off the weight of the rifle. Also try moving the rear sight further from your eye. You may find that you get a much sharper sight picture. You've got to do what works for you. Thanks for the video.

Try a swamped barrel for your next one. That makes a big difference in the weight. I have a .60 cal swamped barrel F&I War flintlock and if it were not a swamped barrel, I would not be able to handle the weight.

The southern mountain rifle does have a 44" swamped barrel and the rifle that I'm getting ready to start building has a 42" swamped barrel. The style of rifle built in the 1820's and 30's that is represented by my old gun didn't have swamped barrels. I appreciate your comment. TC

I always put 4 grains of 4F powder down the barrel before my load of 2F. I do this in my flintlock and my percussion rifles. They never fail to go off. In damp weather I mold a piece of aluminum foil over the locks. BTW, in-lines are cheating.

A friend of mine shoots a matchlock there dam heavey he uses a shooting stick staff . His has a main ground spicke with a smaller side spike that sticks out from the side about seven inches just big enough for you to put your left foot on and push into the ground alongside the main ground spike fixed to a wooded shift at the top of the shift is a U shaped luggage that comes from the top of the staff imagin a U with another arm comeing down on one side that is hollow like a spear shift conection the U is coverd in a padded leather cover made of deer hide the packing is sheep's wool . You carry it in your left hand musket over your right shoulder when you spot your target place the pole to your front left foot on top push the spikes into the ground turn the musket so it sides across your chest onto your left arm let it drop down along your for arm onto the gun rest while holding the pole so your had is close to the U shaped gun rest ones seated use your right hand while the but is shoulder into your right shoulder to pull the lock back I know it sounds awkward but it soon becomes natural and you don't think about it . I've oftain wonders why people don't use this kind of shooting stick anymore . He has also made one for his shotgun but because its lighter it only has the main spike and not the side stand that make it look like a lower case h , with that he puts a rubber walking stick ferrel so he can use it like a thumb stick whale walking

Is the frizzen getting worn through to the softer metal ? I don't know the degree of hardness on your gun, but just thinking it through. I recently had to re-face a frizzen on a pistol due to wear. It doesn't need to take very many strikes for that to happen.

How is it sparking? I remember reading articles about rehardening the frizzen. I have never done it though. I would test it out on the range and see if it is a continuing problem.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you go with such absurdly long barrels? Is it a nostalgic desire for the traditional? My dad and brother for years have hunted with the excellent and now (sadly) discontinued Thompson/Center Renegade, which has a 26" barrel.
@TurkeyCreek-ek8mj
@TurkeyCreek-ek8mj 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes, my primary interest is in the 18th and early 19th centuries. There were basically two reasons the guns had longer barrels. First, the gunpowder wasn't nearly as good as what is made today and it took longer barrels to get a more complete burn of the powder charge and more velocity. Around 1800 when powder manufacturing techniques started producing better powder, the barrel lengths started to shorten, such as the British Baker rifle with a barrel just over 30", and the American Harper's Ferry produced Model 1803 with a 33" barrel. Second, the projectiles were round. In the case of rifled guns, the rifling twist was around 1 turn in 70" give or take do the longer barrels allowed for a more stable bullet flight and better accuracy. Your dad's TC Renegade has a twist of 1 in 48 which is better suited for elongated bullets like the TC Maxi Ball or the Lee REAL bullets. That's kind of a nickel tour but should give you an idea.

I believe in Christ's teachings and prayer and humbling ourselves before God id good advice. But you, as a reenactor, need to look back to the founding of our nation. Long before the pilgrims Christians had been fighting religious wars, not only with people of other faiths but over opinions on theocracy. When a protestant king came to power, Catholics were persecuted. When a Catholic was in power protestants were persecuted, and not a small number of them went to their beheadings or to be burned as heretics. When the puritans arrived they came seeking religious freedom for themselves, not others. They forced out Thomas Hooker and Anne Hathaway for having an opinion other than what the church elders taught, Anne Hathaway being killed in an Indian attack. They also tarred and feathered Quakers and one religious leader spoke of feeling the devine power of God as he slaughtered the Wampanoags, the same people who had helped the first colonists survive. Our founding fathers, mainly deists, in their wisdom, divided church and state. We were founded as a secular nation, not a Christian nation, for a reason. So that all religions and all Christian views could flourish in tolerance. It is not for Christians to prescribe nor mandate. It is for Christians to live and to lead by example and if others will not listen "to shake the dust from their heels" and leave them alone. Thats what my Bible says. What this country needs most these days, in my opinion, is a lesson in tolerance and for Christians to be more Christian.

But have you repented of your sins and trusted in Christ alone for your salvation? Historical facts about this nation won't save you, only Jesus Christ can.

@@jamestrotter3162 amen. And "all who call Lord Lord will not enter in." I'm afraid there are a good number of people who believe themselves righteous who are going to be sadly disappointed. If I remember my Bible text correctly Jesus did not come to those in power nor those who controlled the synagogue. He came to the down trodden, to those who needed him and his message was forgiveness, not vindictiveness nor false righteousness and I do not believe he would countenance his disciples following and supporting a fellow like Trump.
