This is a Caywood Early Wilson Trade Gun, .62 caliber with a barrel length of a bit over 41 inches. Th stock is stained a dark walnut with home made stain, and all the steel parts received a cold blue finish that resulted in a pleasant dark gray finish. I finished building it quite some time ago but this is the first time shooting it. I apologize for the poor video quality. Hopefully one day I will be able to purchase a real video camera. If you enjoyed the video, please consider subscribing to my channel.

Every sense I began with black powder I have enjoyed watching these types of videos. To me flintlock shooting is the pinnacle of artistic marksmanship. In my opinion, any damn fool can purchase an AR-15 platform with a nice scope and hit the bullseye repeatedly. But with a flintlock, there is a longer learning curve. They are masterful works of art.

It still takes some modicum of skill to actually deliver the round in a bullseye with an AR, but what's certain about front-loading flintlock or cap & ball is that efficiency is not the goal of the game, but the exploration of this way more involved method of shooting that elevates the same achievement. You can hit bullseyes at 200yd with a .45 flintlock rifle just as easily as with a bare rifle once it gets down to aiming, but measuring the powder charge, loading it and seating the projectile correctly are what turn the shooting experience more interesting, almost zen-like.

Some of the older gentlemen that I shoot with can usually (at least 90% of the time) hit their targets at 75 to 100 yards. Q uite a few of them are shooting flint smoothbores.

That's encouraging George. I have VERY LITTLE experience shooting smoothbores but plan on doing it a lot more in the future. I've always been a rifleman but now that I have two .62 caliber smoothies, I look forward to enjoying them.

Very nice! I liked hearing that male cardinal, he soon shut his yap ....must thought it wasn't a good place to hang out after that 💥. I don't know if I mentioned to you in past comments, my mom's brother lives just north of Alliance, NE. I farmed out there 4 summers in the mid 2000s. Summer '07 I visited the fur trade museum, then went through the museum once again when my wife, kids and I visited my aunt and uncle Summer of 2019. Great museum! Keep up the content, camera issues are sure a pain. I missed out on good footage at a flintlock shoot this past Saturday due to dead batteries. Oh well. Take care

Thanks Brian! Yes, I was glad to hear one of our cardinals enjoying the morning. Usually all you hear are our chickens! Lol. Our son is a gunsmith at a custom shop in Sturgis SD, so I like to stop at the museum whenever we get up that way. Always interesting even if you've seen it before. I had the dead battery thing when I was videoing my camp during the snow storm. That's why I was only able to post the short video of it. Thanks for watching my videos. I enjoyed your muzzleloader shoot video, even though you didn't get any shooting footage. TC

Shooting smoothbore. it was not uncommon for shot to be premeasured and wrapped in paper. Even if the powder was measured and dropped separately.
