Well, to be fair, the younger generations saw their parents be overworked by corporate America and have decided to set boundaries.
@katie18976

Exactly. Even though I am not from USA I still witnessed the same thing from my parents and when I started working myself. The more you do, the more they expect from you and the more work they will give you. But they will not give you more money for overtime or more time off. And in the end it is you who is overworked and underpaid. Most companies take what they can as long as they can. And then they replace you with a blink of an eye for someone who is less capable and less experienced but who asks a bit less money than you did. And they see it as a win. So no, I am not working overtime for free, my time off is my personal time.

@@judyperri9496not true. we just know that we don’t matter to corporations and even the hardest workers will be let to drown if it means the company gets a dollar. The 2008 financial crisis was huge for most of genz in north america. Besides it’s not like the money i get from work goes far, might as well have fun and enjoy myself. because once i get home, it’s hard to be happy when i can’t afford to hit the same financial milestones boomers did. Homes are a million dollars unless they’re in the country or an area with poor infrastructure and social services. Honestly, I am German and we have a saying going "Feierabend ist Feierabend" and that is a Motto that our workers with 50+ years keep up and that is why I love those guys. I remember me working in this office job, 19 years of age, and I was about to take my Laptop with me to finish some stuff up. And this old engineer about 55 years old said: "You have worked 8 hours, leave that thing here. If it needs to be finished it can be done tomorrow, because free time is free time, go home and relax". And that is exactly what I am living by now. 😌🙌 So my working changed uttely, I give 100% at work and 0% out of work, it it needs to be done so bad, do it yourself or be patient and ask me tomorrow.

As for reputation... no, they don't give a F*CK about if you are willing to work extra or not, what do you think will happen? huh? that your boss decides you have been a mucho good boy and give you a promotion? no... sorry to burst your delusional bubble, but what happens is your boss will keep you exactly where you are because that is where you make him money, you are nothing but a number wake the f*ck up, this is not the 1960's anymore, it's 2024, no one cares about reputation unless you are a celebrity, your boss doesn't give a shite about you, he is not your friend and if he is, then you are the guy everyone else at the office hates because he gets preferential treatment and is skipped to the top of the line for a promotion despite everyone else being much better at your job than you. The sooner you realize that you will always, for the rest of your life, be at the bottom and that incompetence is rewarded far more than hard work the sooner you will be at peace with your fate. Makes me think of the lady that got sent an email at like 4:57 on Friday and her day ended at 5. She didn't respond, obviously, because a normal person is signed off 3 minutes before the end of their work week; and then at like 8:14 the next Monday got a "I emailed you 3 days ago" follow up when in reality, it had been sent essentially 17 "work minutes" before. And some people were siding with the idiot who thinks an email sent 3 minutes before the end of the work day requires a response. Sorry, but at 4:57 pm on Friday, if it can't wait until Monday morning, you call the person, ask very nicely and offer them overtime. Otherwise, it gets handled on the next business day. No exceptions. And I'm sure somebody will be all "you'll always be poor with an attitude like that." But I'm not poor and make six figures. Go back to your moms basement.

I remember because she had sent out the text to my mom's work phone and when she didn't answer in five minutes, she called until it was picked up. So if my mom tries to contact her boss over a staff shortage and that's not an emergency when you don't have enough people to cover your department, what short-of-a-natural-disaster are you calling her for? This is me and my work friend, both millennials, with one specific boomer colleague. She leaves work around noon to continue working from home, outsources everything to us that's not appealing to her and then gets angry when we won't come in early for occasional tasks because we already spend way more than eight hours per day at work. She seems to think that we're super lazy, and when we're sick she's like "cut back on your domestic duties but make sure you come to work". Like no ma'am, I'm not the one vacuuming my house while still on the clock.

I'm a zillenial, I think? I stay late sometimes, but only because my company gives us a flexible work schedule. If we do more hours in one week, we can do fewer hours on another, or vice-versa. I think that with many of these generational and work commitment videos, we have to remember. 1. Many of our older family members worked for a single company their entire lives that took care of them, while we have companies that pretend to be our "family but will lay off half of the company at any moment. 2. Many of our older family members were only required to work 40 hours, meanwhile we millenials, gen z, etc, etc, are basically penalized if we don't work 80 hour work weeks and stay at work at 10pm an go to all the BS after work functions, and the worst part is there is many times no incentive to work more, because you aren't paid hourly but salaried. 3. Our parents and older generations were actually paid properly to account for the 40 hour work week and company that actually valued them. The younger generations realizes that there's no point working more than the 40 hours required, they aren't being paid more, and they know they are expendable regardless if they do a good job or not.

Its been proven over the last oh... idk... thousands of years... that you get what you put in. If you constantly do the bare minimum, you will be the bare minimum.... replaceable. If you are always the replaceable person, you will always be replaced as soon as you screw up or you piss someone off. If you do that a lot, you have a lot of jobs in your work history. Hve a lot of jobs in your work history, it shows you have some sort of problem. If the company you are applying for thinks you have some sort of problem, you will be the last picked. Then you will bitch and moan and play victim, when it was you that did it to yourself. So no, zoomers dont have the correct attitude. I have tried that before and instantly pissed off the boss. Instantly got put on shit duty... instantly got hours reduced because others were more productive... pressed into a position where i either quit or got fired. WHen i really needed the income. So no, you dont do that.

So true, while there are definitely some lazy entitled brats in my generation, but we all know this idea of becoming a slave and working your way up a ladder just doesn’t exist anymore. The yearly 3% pay increase doesn’t match the increase in cost of living and the second a more senior position opens up, they bring in someone external rather than promote someone internal. It’s created a culture where you’d be foolish to do more than what’s stated on your job description. Just work a job for a few years then leverage the experience for a better job elsewhere for 20%+ more pay. And if boomers think their generation had it all figured out, why are they relying on pensions and retirement schemes funded by taxes? Shouldn’t their perfect system have earned them enough to last until they die to not be a burden on the current working class?

We GenXers were taught to be loyal and it would pay off, we had grandparents who still received pensions, parent who stayed at the same company for nearly their entire life after university, union workers who made more than the salaried office workers….then we got fucked so hard by corporations who shat on our work ethic. There are the few examples of it working out (engineers, the early computer geniuses, etc.), but the rest of us burnt out and were treated poorly. Set boundaries, use all your sick time, even if you aren’t sick, use all pto…or the company might fuck you out of it. When the company says no persistently to vacation time, look for a new job and leave the old with ZERO notice.
