Prodigy at this point is the Nickelback of disc golf companies. Actually have some banger molds but it's popular to dislike them so everyone dogs on them.

I understand the issue with flashing. I think Innova has a similar problem especially with Champion plastic. The workaround is super easy though: scrape it off and mildly sand it down. I've taken many a discs that felt like they would cut my hand open and made them into super smooth releasing, great hand feeling discs.
@russb82912 күн бұрын
In addition, the PA-5 (premium plastic) and the A2 have permanent spots in my bag. The PA-5 is my go to for tight gaps where I need something to flip up to flat and push. The A2 is amazing for forehands or backhands for approach shots that need a tight turn. Beefier than a Zone but more usable than a Zone OS.
@jonsidell33382 күн бұрын
Use carpet! Put the disc down on carpet and push hard while rotating. The friction will melt the flashing down and you will have a smoother hand feel without heading to the tool shed. Also there is no chance of the disc being illegally modified should you play with “that guy” at league.

Love the A3(USA made)! I bag it in 400 and reblend. The reblend gives the mold a bit of dome. I have found if you rub vegetable oil into your chalky plastic and then buff it dry, the chalking goes away.

Archive is a good alternate to the M2. It sits between my Pyro and Hex and it's honestly seasoning into a straight mid that I can put so much sauce into and it glides forever. I started playing last spring, and exclusively threw prodigy. With a shryke in my bag for easy distance. I started with the dura flex plastic, now all of my prodigy discs are in the 500 plastic and I love them. D1 and D2 are my go to for long drives. I putt with 500 plastic pa-3’s have an M4 in 400g plastic accompanied by and mx2 and mx3 for my middies. I run an fx-1 as my workhorse for most shots on my local course. For the most part, not many of my discs have flashing, and the ones made in the USA, say it on the discs. Light sanding will fix all of the flashing problems. But when I need to throw putters, Lunas in big Z and Z plastic are my go to’s. Overall, every manufacturer has comparable discs in there line up. Except for a fuse, no one has a fuse clone. lol
@KevinJames902 күн бұрын
I love the Pa-5, but haven’t tried much else and I’m hoping to learn about some fire molds from this series! But as for flashing I’ve also noticed a lot on Discraft/ DGA recently, mostly on the wing edge at the parting line.

I personally like the PA2 over the PA3 for a throwing putter. It has a more comfortable grip and a little more stability with decent glide. I really wanted to like the PA3 because that’s what everyone throws but I think the PA2 is also a great disc and nobody ever talks about it. It’s weird because I think the consensus is beaded is generally better for putting and beadless is better for throwing. Also, love the A2, and p model series are good but wish they came in other plastic variations.
@trevorcalvert35092 күн бұрын
100% agree on the Pa2. I putt and throw them. I like the touch more stability and non beaded feel

Honestly love the branding and naming of the Prodigy stuff. If I was to point a beginner to one company, Prodigy would be it just based solely on the naming. PA = Putt and Approach, A = Approach, M = Midrange, F = Fairway, H = Hybrid, D = Distance, and X = Extra speed (standalone or combined with other naming prefixes). Then, Higher the number = more understable, and Lower the number = more overstable. The fact people find this confusing confuses me. That alone makes building a bag and comparing molds so much easier than wacky ass names of animals and popular science terminology. M3 too understable for your arm speed in that neutral slot? Bump down to an M2. Eliminates some of the guess work imo 🙌

I honestly really like prodigy, and don’t think they deserve as much hate as they get. The PA-5 was my go to putter after my shoulder surgery. My arm strength was super low switching back to throwing right handed, and the PA-5 had all the glide in the world. It takes no effort to get it to the basket. Now that I’m back to normal arm strength I would putt with PA-3’s but recently switched to streamline pilots.

Speaking of the “____ model” discs, I have a D model OS that I have beat to crap and is great for those cramped lie spots where you can’t get a full swing but can still get a full flight out of the disc. I don’t always bag it but if I know I’m playing in a wooded course it’s making the bag as a “just in case” disc. Overall I think Prodigy is slept on a bit, but it’s a very middle of the line company. Some absolute fantastic molds and then some absolute terrible molds. Love me a D4, M3, and a slept on mold for me is the PA1 in the 750 plastic, absolute money short approach disc

I was the one who said the thing about marketing. I should have clarified. Their branding i agree is great, but a good example i have is Cale made a post about Falcors being made in the US now, and that wasn't shown anywhere else. Not being more clear about things like that just seems like misstep to me. They also really did fix their flashing "problem" and honestly it would be pretty funny to make a tongue in cheek reference to it. If your biggest complaint about Prodigy is flashing I would be willing to bet you’ve never tooled a disc. Every manufacturer has flashing on their discs. In my experience, C-Line Discmania ruined my brand new disc doctor way faster than a whole bag of Prodigy ever could. I don’t work for Disc Doctor but do yourself a favor and buy two when they rerelease later this month. I have Prodigy discs that feel better than you can imagine because of a little tooling when drinking a beer and watching KZbin. Quit being a soft hand baby and throw an A3, they whistle.

I think that the reputation of the prodigy brand has been kinda destroyed by the whole basket thing to be honest. Anyone who follows disc golf or competes in tournaments at any level have heard the horror stories of a local pro or guy on tour having spitouts and other tomfoolery because of those baskets. When someone associates something so negative with a company, even if it's not about the discs, it inevitably makes them think about the brand in a more negative way. As a new player in the sport, personally haven't thrown that much prodigy, mostly because it's not one of the first brands that got me excited about trying new discs. Those companies for me were MVP, thoughtspace, and discraft.
