AM4 is a real beast for editing and cheap to get a 16 core cpu. Depends how much you need/use quick sync if you prefer intel. Can also reuse the DDR4. The boards are also more numerous on the second hand market.

Get yourself a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, and you can use that new bay for 2.5" drives as well. I got so many useless laptop drives and 120gb ssd's. It is nice to have and just backup random things. I also put one in my win98 machine and swap ssd's out when I want to change to XP or some other OS.

Richard, You might look into a raid based file server. Many configurations have built in redundancy, and used drives are cheap. Building a 5-20TB server will not cost as much as you think.

Detlef did this on the video editing PC at the office using 2x 4TB drives as a single 8TB drive

Possibly look at creating a ceph based system using petasan or proxmox etc. The reason I say this is because ceph allows different drive sizes to all be together, and you can either upgrade any drive by swapping it with a bigger one; or create second system and put them together. The space size will xhange dynamically. Backup your files to that. Just an option

@@LearnElectronicsRepair That won't provide a safety net. In fact it will double the risk of a drive failure. If you only have space for two drives I would mirror them (RAID1)

I built a new machine using used and broken parts. Ryzen 5700X3D (aliexpress) Gigabyte aorus x570 master (broken) RTX 4070Ti (broken) 2tb gen4 nvme (used) 48gb DDR4 4000 (used) Intel ax200 wifi6 (used) 360mm AIO watercooler (used) Origin genisis PC case with 5 bay SAS (found in trash) All in I paid about 800 for everything. I got the keyboard from a thrift store and wifi gaming controller used. Its a beast of a PC and I'm super proud of it.

Beware the two generations (and possibly the new ones as well) from Intel, with "processor rot" --- Especially used. seems like a fairly large percentage starts crashing randomly after 6 months to a year. Any of the problem processors should be avoided because you will end up having to yank the processor out. Of course, the latest gen has a different socket, so you can't use that. My *old* editor here is a 4 core I-7. Switched to an 8 core AMD, and the performance difference was amazing. Just ordered one of the new Minisforum "AI" machines with 12 cores, 50 of the AI cores, and a small pile of graphics cores. Should be here shortly...

I highly agree with your way of using used usable stuff in a professionnel way. Of cause, this is mostly possible for talented people. (Right tools and a stock of component parts is helpful for sure) So 👍👍👍

Cheers. I do find that X99 is a very good platform for a high performance video editing rig although these motherboards came out in 2014. It really does work very well ten years later even for 4K 60fps editing, It's not too shoddy for playing new games either, and the motherboards and processors are fairly cheap to buy. I suspect the quad channel DDR4 gives it an advantage even over some later platforms?

hey richard, did you enable XMP setting in UEFI? it looked to me that it wasn't enabled when you did the video. for backup and large storage, i would recommend you to look into truenas, as it has redundancy integrated if you configure it the right way. Always remember, raid is not a backup. for a backup storage i like to use old server cases with integrated drive caddies. for example Chenbro SR107. having that many data, you really should think about all the possible fault cases. Lightning strikes, ransomware, drive failure, machine failure, Theft, EMP (for the paranoids only)

I bought on a auction a semi broken i9-9900K and a working motherboard have been using it for a year now the only problem with the CPU is if i have to low of a CPU voltage it crashes when it loads Windows so i've just forced the CPU voltage to a fixed voltage and its working fine i think i paid 100 euro or something like that for it wasn't that bad deal when just the motherboard was worth 100 euro used Is the caddy hot swappable?

Interesting stuff, although having just helped a friend to recover (most of) their stuff after a ransomware attach I’m now cautious about adding extra storage permanently attached.
@LearnElectronicsRepairКүн бұрын
Yeah that's why I fittted the drive caddy so I can use my stash of used 1Tb drives to make two copies of all the YT videos and then keep them off the PC
@melvilib23 сағат бұрын
You are right to be cautious, I have seen people in some distress because of these ransomware criminals. I keep a copy offsite and disconnected from any systems (USB drives in this case). Always test recovery from your backups periodically. For the record I also have local backups and cloud backups. Paranoid, moi 🙂

Hi Richard why don’t you get a nas unit they are excellent for sharing and keeping and backing up your videos.
@LearnElectronicsRepairКүн бұрын
Guess my philosophy was to use all the 1TB drives I found on car boot PCs and store all my YT videos on those (each file on two seperate drives) then stash them away. I don't need them on the PC they are just backup. As I mentioned I have 12 or 13 of those drives and find more from time to time

Begin rant mode. I would not touch Intel 13 or 14th K processors especially used ones. They are affected by 2 issues. One issue is over voltage being supplied to the CPU by motherboards which was "supposedly" fixed by 2 BIOS updates the latest one in Oct 2024. The other issue with 13/14th gen is a corrosion issue during manufacturing which Intel knew about for a year and allowed affected CPUs to be sold through the channel and told no one until the brown stuff hit the fan this summer. I say "supposedly" because there is no definitive proof it solves the over voltage issue. If you CPU was affected by over voltage issue before you were able to apply the BIOS update then that CPU has to be RMA'd. Intel has added 2 additional years of warranty onto these CPUs. I have used Intel CPUs for years for builds over the past 30 yrs but the way Intel handled this fiasco they lost the goodwill they had with me. End rant mode.

5960x is a fast and cheap drop in, when I had my x99 and 5960x I OCed it to 4.7ghz and it benchmarked the same as my 9900k at stock settings so same 4.7ghz and almost the same score, 9900k was based on the 5960x, yes the quad channel memory helps a lot, my ran at xmp 3200 cl16, 18, 18, 36. With Bdie you can get even better performance and they are still pretty cheap but going up in price, I got myself a few 16gb and 32gb kists in the last 2-3 years for around 50$ for each kit.

@@LearnElectronicsRepair He's right and you're technically right, there are cheap x99 boards on Aliexpress but those are not true x99 chipset but some other chipset made to imitate x99 but not fully and with used brand name boards going for not much more I wouldn't touch those x99 pretenders.
