Thank you for highlighting my hometown! you have captured a moment in time that is significant! Since you have been there, the building on the corner of Center and Broad Sts has burned - where Gigi's was. The architectural and historical fabric of the square has been changed, yet downtown is strong as is Gig! The Red Brick City Hall is unique in its Richardsonian design! Statesville has much of its commercial history in the brick industry! If you are interested, please return, and discover even more jewels of the city!

Statesville Historical Collection is my favorite place in town and Iredell Museums is nice as well. Where the Edward Jones office is now on Cooper Street is where the old jail was, where Tom Dooley was incarcerated from October 1866 until his excution on May 1 1868

@@TimothyFrench Glad to inform. Studied the Dooley case for 20+ years. I have visited Western North Carolina 19 times and will be back in October. I have written a couple of books, Land of Friendliness and Beauty - A Danes Guide to Western North Carolina and Who Killed Laura Fosrer about the Dooley case, and finally a novella The Doctor's Secret. My fictional answer to the question.

What area of NC outside of Charlotte would you recommend for a nice place to live, good public schools, and a good singles/family life scene and somewhat affordable.

I like the Mooresville Graded School District. www.mgsd.k12.nc.us/about-us The area is growing fast, but there are various price levels for home buyers and renters alike.

I have lived in Statesville mostly all my life. It is a friendly town but the outside of town on the east side is very run down and vacant. Lots of decaying businesses. Most places my family enjoyed closed and moved south to the Mooresville, Lake Norman area. That area has become the nesting place for lots of NASCAR teams and drivers, The Charlotte Hornets, and the Carolina Panthers. Just a small bit of information for you!

Thanks for the info; I did not know that. I have heard the song wrote about him. For those of you who may not know, In 1868, a man named Tom Dula (pronounced Dooley) was hanged in Statesville, N.C. after being convicted of murdering his lover, Laura Foster, in 1866. The execution wasn't the end of Tom Dula's story. For generations, rumors, conspiracies, and a hit song have swirled around the crime and its fallout.

I feel safe downtown and everywhere I have been in Stateville. About 5 miles southheast of downtown has a poorer residential area. However, even that area is not scary. I get the impression that people Black or White, are friendly to each other. This town feels like Mayberry.
