Sure, it's the parents fault, but it would also be the parents fault if the drinking age was under 18 and kids drank anyways. Doesn't mean the drinking age shouldn't be 18. Many sites just go, "Oh it needs new thing here, check their ip and put that restriction if the ip is from there" because if they don't it's more annoying for the rest of their users, thus potentially losing the other users. So a VPN could change what location they think the request is coming from, thus bypassing the id based age verification system.

The internet isn't some fictional world. The internet is just an information hub. It gives people the ability to communicate long distances in a short time. There are a plethora of parents that act as if it's everyone's job to raise their kids except themselves. In turn, everyone else has to suffer the consequences because many parents are either too ignorant or can't be bothered to properly monitor what their children access online. They always talk about "protect the kids" and yet millions of children are FAILED by CPS each year. All this sounds like to me is a disaster waiting to happen.

I lost my 20+ year PayPal account last year because they started requiring government ID. I am not opposed to supplying it except that they require my account name to match 100% the ID. I only use an abbreviated version of my name, such as David -> Dave, James -> Jim, Alexander -> Alex, Douglas -> Doug, Timothy -> Tim, Jennifer -> Jenny etc. (Not to mention the unused middle name problem too.) They would not accept this so I remain banned. I imagine as more sites implement ID checks this will become more common.😪

A decade ago I used to half jokingly preach that we need internet age+ IDs to filter out some of the garbage and to know that other person is old enough to deserve the absolute roasting you're about to hit them with. My idea was simply to have a basic ID pass with one step detached from your identity, similar to somebody glancing at your age+ card before entering a bottle shop. NOT a scan for their records with your identity attached to it, that's absurd and obviously going to end badly. My idea would be that the government issues you a unique code that says "yeah, they're old but you can't see who they are, we can't even see who they are, by design". Could this be spoofed/borrowed/stolen? Of course, fake IDs have existed forever, the intention is to protect the most people with the least potential for negative side effects. tl;dr regardless if the gov should or shouldn't do anything, their implementation is dumber than a 1990s "what's this new internet thing?" solution. There's better, safer, more logical ways to do what they're stating is their goal.
