I made a 900 3 round granny square blanket, crocheting over the ends as I went. It covered a cal-king with lots of overlap. It was humongous, heavy and went for $1500 at the volunteer fire benefit auction.

Theres a wonderful sense of accomplishment that you can only get when you finish a big project like this! Congrats on achieving your goal!😊 About three winters back i adapted a quilters grannys garden pattern to crochet and made 551 six sided motifs to use up my scrap. The finished afghan fits my 3/4 bed and the motifs range from spring flowers at the top to the darkest fall flowers at the bottom with all the green leaves represented around them. Every night i get that same feeling of accomplishment as i cozy up for sleep with my "garden" 😊 you deserve a blue ribbon for yours, its beautiful. Heres a hint: stack your colors by last round then work all horizontals first, placing the first two then contnuing with the next two directly to the left and so on, whipstiching continuously so you have one seam across. Continue the next row across and so on until all horizontal seams are complete then go back and finish all the vertical seams. It seems to work up quicker and tidier this way, at least ive found it to be so. I love granny squares, they're so versatile. You can use up scraps or plan special colors, use varied stiches or all the same, whipstitch or crochet together in several different ways, so much variety😀 happy crocheting🧓!!!!!

This is impressive!! I've been working on a blanket with 99 squares for *months* (to be fair, several weeks of that was lost to waiting for more yarn and I have to do it again now lol because I'm autistic / dyslexic and math just isn't my strong suit lol), and I still have about 30 squares to go. I've also been working on other gift projects simultaneously, so that didn't help any lol. I've been crocheting for over 20 years now (my grandmother started teaching me when I was four), but I have carpal tunnel and I can't work super quickly unfortunately. Also, I'm not sure if anyone wants or needs the following advice about weaving in ends, but I do want to explain a misconception I noticed in the video that would help a lot of people understand why their projects don't seem as strong or why their ends start poking out pretty quickly: Based on how you were demonstrating sewing in your ends with your squares, you are NOT weaving in your ends - you are tucking them. The main difference is the number of passes of the yarn, and how you're catching the stitches when you make each pass. Weaving in your ends is quite literally weaving yarn back and forth through the fabric of your project so the end will not get tugged out over time. You want to weave your ends through the back of the fabric by splitting the yarn so the woven ends don't show through in the front. Make your first pass in one direction, then make your second pass in an opposing direction (you can go in a perpendicular direction, or back the way you came - if you chose the later, make sure you are catching different parts of the split threads so you don't accidentally undo your first pass). Make your third pass following the same instructions as that for your second pass. This will give you an end that is fully hidden and won't come loose over time. You can also follow a circle / triangle pattern to weave in your ends, but make sure you overlap the final pass slightly with your first. Tucking in your ends is a method of hiding your ends that is completely valid, but you do run the risk of those ends coming loose over time (and potentially squares getting frogged in the middle of the blanket, if you don't secure the end very well). Tucking in ends is the simple act of hiding them. You aren't splitting the yarn or weaving the yarn through your project - you're encasing your ends in a tube. This means the yarn enclosed in that tube can be easily pulled out or torn off by accident. This is not a good method of hiding ends if you are gifting or selling the piece, but otherwise there isn't a reason not to tuck your ends. Either method you use, you should leave a tail the length of a standard crochet hook (literally just hold your yarn against your crochet hook as a measuring tool and snip). If you don't leave a long enough end, you risk breaking the yarn / needle, the project coming partially undone and not having the length of yarn to fix it (since it's hard to hold when it's too short), etc. If you want to tuck your ends for a personal project, I'd suggest holding the yarn against your w.i.p. and crocheting around it (that way you don't have add in the extra step of tucking in your ends separately). Alternatively, with thinner yarns like it looks like you used here, you can crochet your ends into the project invisibly in a way that will *hold*. To do so, you'll want to: Gather all of your end threads together (hypothetically, let's say you have 6). Separate two threads, and hold those with your working yarn. The other four threads should be held against the w.i.p. - you'll crochet over them for 1 or 2 stitches. Every ( / every other) stitch, pick up two more threads and hold them with your working yarn to crochet together until all ends are gone. I've been doing this with my current blanket (I'm using weight 0 and weight 1 yarns only, so I'm holding quite a few together at a time and I have to switch colors semi-frequently), and this method has been a genuine life saver. I am more than happy to clarify anything as necessary, as I know this was a bit long-winded, but I've already spent well over and hour trying to making this clearer and shorter, so at this point I'm just going to post it lol.

I’m a quilter, not really a yarn expert, but you can turn all those scraps into a cool fabric! You can sandwich them between 2 layers of tule (there’s also some special material available that textile artists use for just this sort of thing), then use a sewing machine over the whole piece to tightly stitch/“quilt” it all over to make a piece of fabric. From there you can cut it and sew it into whatever.
@iheartdorks11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment!! I haven't thought of using tule!

I know I'm late to this video, but for the future, especially if you're going to ply together thinner yarn the way you did in this project, get yourself some finishing needles! I discovered them through a random TikTok and they have been an absolute game changer. The eye takes up the entire needle so you can catch those shorter, slippery ends and pull them through/weave them in without wrestling a regular yarn needle.

Honestly doing that many squares in two months is super impressive especially for a beginner. I got bored very easily, I did a granny square skirt for a concert that I started in march and only finished a couple days before the concert around june 12th. I loved the outcome but there are a million things I would change, such as weaving in the ends as I go. I ended up leaving them and it worked pretty well since it was more of a campy concert outfit (it was a skirt based on the weeknds discography and eras, so blue yellow red black and white granny squares with a few sun and star squares mixed in with the regular ones) I actually filmed a big portion of making it and kind of wanted to do a youtube video but I got overwhelmed and scared
