In this video, I decided to do something I've been putting off for a while - make a chopping board. I heard that making a box and cutting board are entry projects into woodworking, so I've done one of the two. Trouble is, I can't afford a few oak boards so I decided to use firewood!
I started by using the Aldi table saw to mill the firewood down into useable chunks. Next, I used my Titan Thicknesser to make the wood as square as possible (disclaimer: not square). After that, it was the usual process of sanding, gluing, sanding, spraying, sanding treating.
Tools that I used:
Evolution Track Saw: www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-...
Dewalt Impact Driver: www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcf...
Evolution Mitre Saw: www.screwfix.com/p/evolution-...
Dewalt Orbital sander: www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcw...

Just a tip which am guessing youll know or do. I use a paint scraper that ive put very fine edge on to scrape off glue. And a keep small pot of few diffeent kinda sawdust that a can mix up you can akso blend some darker atuff with little light stuff make it bit less noticeable. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍 Also found tilt tracksaw/circular saw to like 20° makes nice edge profile for boards.

Cheers for the tips mate. I've been a bit reliant on the router table recently but you're right, the track saw gives an awesome profile!

You should make a knife with a wooden handle to match that beautiful board. I am inspired to make a board out of silver madrone my firewood stash..I've been reluctant as I might need the wood to stay warm.

Thankyou so much for this channel (and video). It is like I relive myself every winter in my frosty work shop and I've made the same board and similar. Been through the whole process of no clue what my fathers few machines were able to do after he passed, and learned from nothing just started off four years ago. Still amature, this is how I still feel, how I still enjoy and keep learning and upgrade some every year. KZbin have tonnes of those who show how to make $100.000 tables in a shop that contains $1.000.000 equipment, but very rare to find such channels that takes it from the basic and with what one got, and develop from there. Amazing! Loved the cutting board, and I smiled alot during your process. I did the same, and still do it 😀 I'm not that sure that is entirely Ash though, and yes some pieces might be Ash, but most looked like Elm to me, especially when the coating came on. Keep it up, I subscribed (#619) and find this as inspirational and entertaining! Cheers from Norway!

I REALLY enjoyed reading this comment. KZbin has been such an amazing place for me to learn the little I know about woodworking. As you said, the trouble is, by the time a channel hits your radar, they've usually upgraded their workshop to the point where the tools are not within your price range. @dainermade @jespermakes @karlpopewoodcraft are 3 channels that helped me realise that you can get going with minimal tools. They're upgrading their shops now but I completely understand what you mean about catching something from the start - it helps you realise what is possible with commitment. Truly appreciate the support and you taking the time to write the comment. Greetings to you in Norway!

Give it a try! Using the firewood obviously made it more difficult than it needed to be but the satisfaction of doing it all for free is nice! Good luck with it

Well done, firs cutting board, so you are now in to woodworking. I done non cutting boards, but I made some boxes 🤔 so it that mean i am half way in to woodwork🤫. The wood looks like most of it is ash and some oak.

Thanks for watching fellow 50%er hahah Learning box making is on my to-do list. I want to spend the next few weeks getting more organised with the garage and then look into a few jigs to make the process easier. Any tips for making my first box?

@@justbswoodworking It is looks like interesting videos coming on. What tips I can give for making box hmmm.. For me I learn on my mistakes with every project what i do. Just keep trying do your best and will be fine. In boxes the accuracy is the key. To have long and shorter sides this same length. I try to cut opposite sides on one cut. So two long site one cut and two short one cut. This way I know both sides are this same length. I hope that will help.

Good going. If you really don't like sanding, have you considered a hand plane? A low angle jack might let you skip a couple of sanding steps.

Cheers for stopping by. A few others have suggested it and I know I should... I just don't know what to buy! I don't want to buy cheap as I know they're useless but the videos I've watched say to spend hundreds! Do you have any recommendations?

Oh and don't worry about damaging those chisels, unless you lob one across the garage, there's very little you can do to them that can't be undone by sharpening.

Nice job! Maybe I should have a look through my firewood pile too! You can cut down your time sanding if you use the scribble technique with all the grits, not just the last one. When you have removed the scribble, it is time to move to the next finer grit. This takes the guesswork out of sanding and, trust me, you'll get through the sanding much faster.
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Жыл бұрын
Cheers for the tip. I usually only bother for the final grit so I'll certainly start doing it for every grit now. I've heard a few people mention scrapers as a way to minimise sanding. Do you have any experience with those? Cheers for the support.

@@justbswoodworking I have no experience with card scrapers (cabinet scrapers) but I have used the Bahco tungsten carbide scraper to remove the worn out finish from some antique chairs. A good tool - it leaves a finish-ready surface, so no need for sanding

only an evolution track saw? yes i agree it is a cheap tool but why pay out hundreds for something that can do the same job as the evolution ? i think if you look after the tools you have you can do just as good job . great cutting board i'm gonna have a go myself oh and aldi table saw bit rough but does the job ,cant wait for the next vid
