Check out our other videos to see the whole process! We take down the trees, we mill them ourselves, and then with projects like these and many others we turn the unwanted trees we take down in our business into beautifully repurposed, useable lumber and furniture!

My favorite class in college was cabinet making at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa Ca back in 1980. I made a stereo cabinet out of mahogany and have in to this day. Wood working in any form is been one of my natural interest ever since I was in my early teens. Great idea making a cutting board, I want to make a custom live edge licence plate for my 1969 Ford F-250 that says (FARM TRUCK).

Not to be critical but a tip I have learned from watching other woodworkers on here. After you think you are done sanding spray your wood down with water. That will raise the wood fibers then final sand with 220. Makes it that much nicer. Nice board by the way. Next challenge....a glue up.

It will help you in the long run to wear a mask or respirator when sanding. There are very fine dust particles floating in the air you are breathing. As you age this accumulates in your lungs and can cause awful respiratory problems. Nice job on the board

Love the video. I watched it several months ago. I’m now milling my own lumber. Today is cherry. Planning on cutting boards once it dries. Someone asked you if you were worried about the wood cupping because it was one piece. Did you have any issues in the last year with cupping or warping and did you seal the knots with anything to stabilize them and keep meat juices out. Thanks

He's a MD, I'm a peon EMT, it's going to be our retirement business. LoL Been watching all the videos I can on milling. Mill won't be here until November, that's how back logged they are. Well I don't know if you would remember that in one of your prior videos of live edge log milling, I mentioned I planed on making a custom live edge rear bumper sticker with the words (FARMTRUCK) on it. Well I got it done, I used my table saw, router and power sander, then used white silicon to fill in the groves cut by the router and razor blades it level with the surface. Then used clear polyurethane and artist paint brushes to seal the wood. I tried to share a link to my LG phone pictures but I haven't found a way yet to do so.

So something you can do with inclusions or whatever they're called like knots, and holes and whatnot, you can tape up one side of the hole, flip it over and pour some epoxy in it to fill it up, then plane it down and BAM its stabilized. Don't have to obviously, just figured I'd put in my 1 cent (I already gave my wife my other cent today) lol. Looks super good though

How thick of a slab did you use? I have a 2” maple slab i was thinking of using for a cutting board. Also did you just use oil on it or did you do some sort of epoxy or glossy sealer?

1 inch thick slab, and I just uses food grade mineral oil

Does the wood need to be completely dry before starting a cutting board? I have a piece I would like to start but this wood has been submerged for a few years.
@TimberMates
@TimberMates 2 жыл бұрын
i would give it a year at least to dry after its been milled, rule of thumb is 1 year per inch of thickness drying time

Put plenty of oil on the end grain. It will help seal out bacteria. And keep the board from end grain cracking.

I couldn't help noticing that the board had a twist in it. Usually, this would be corrected before passing it through a thicknesser. But you can mitigate for wobble by adding rubber feet - adjust their height by the amount that you tighten the fixing screws.

So I'm not the smartest alley Cat , and I don't really do much in the kitchen / but aren't those knots going to be a big bacteria trap ?? and things could really end up badly in the litter box ( if you know what I mean ) ? :-l
@jeffrich4910
@jeffrich4910 Жыл бұрын
This is very true. It will take some time, but the more moisture it gets it the faster. Also most wooden cutting are end grain for knife marks and are better for overall life on boards. There's a lot more to making safe kitchen equipment out of wood then just milling some wood and putting on a food safe coat.
