I made a DIY Vocal Booth from a Felt Cat Cave.

If you can't soundproof the room, soundproof the microphone. I didn't really like any of the commercial options, so I decided to make my own.
Ingredients:
- 1x felt cat cave
- 2x panels of red acoustic foam
- 1x panel of white acoustic foam
- 1x clamp

Big improvement on room reflexions but does it make a singing vox sound more boxy? Great innovative solution, well done, especially like the teeth.

Not really, because the direct sound is captured, mostly we’re killing the reflection bouncing in the room from easily being picked up by the back of the diaphragm. This is most effective ( and needed ) for a condenser mic, which is a lot more sensitive to ambient noises

This is ingenious! I actually have one of those cat felt things.... I don't think they are expensive either. Did you use glue to affix the acoustic foam?

Yes, I used spray adhesive, the same you would normally use to mount acoustic foam.

You harden the felt by soaking it in watered down white glue. You have to do it while it’s in a form. I used an inflatable beach ball of the right size

@@roccoharris it really depend if the felt is thick enough to hold its shape as is. you can always harden it later if that doesn't work

I'd say it works quite well! Very noticeable reduction in room reflections. What was your total cost and what would you sell them for if you went down that path? Congrats - the teeth are a stroke of genius!

I was mostly kidding. the things with DIY is that you can't really make it profitable unless it's sold as art. Let me see, so parts: Cat Cave: $45 ( range seems to be $30-60 ) Acoustic Foam is $20 on Amazon for a pack of 12 ( I used 2 I already had ) + a white one for the teeth the clamp was ( I think ) $20 for a pack of 4, and I used a strip of aluminium for rigidity and to hold the clamp in place. So maybe $60 of material + and a few hours of labor? as a boutique/etsy style product it would have to be $150 and probably re-engineered with an armature so it could be sold as a flat pack, because shipping a 18" sphere is too expensive, and everyone now expect shipping to be baked into the cost of things ( fuck you amazon 😕)
