Thank you so much. Being so humble and honesty is highly appreciated. I screwed up last time, ended up with a blown primer and a very, very stiff bolt. I was lucky I did not get hurt. No more phone calls or people around me when reloading. Cheers & stay safe, Sir!

Outstanding tip on using the shell holder with the bullet puller, thanks for sharing that. Also, it takes a big man to admit his mistakes, and an overcharge can happen easy when you get distracted. Depending on how warm your working load is, those extra 4 grains could have been exciting. Glad to see it was just blowing primers. Cuidado!

G'day, Impressed that you shared your mistake, it is not easy to do. I was reloading 357 mag on Sunday. The powder dispenser count was one higher than what I finished with in my loading trays, When I did my standard "look inside the case" to check for powder, before putting the pill in, guess what I saw? A double charge in one case. Just goes to show the value of good procedures, checks and balances. Before putting powder in, all my cases are "Primer up" in the loading block.

Hey Eric I had a tip I thought I might share in the lid of the Lapua bullet box there is a grid with circles in it . I wanted to add that I am really enjoying patreon thank you for the content

On the ear muffs, if you find a good brand that is compatible, they make replacement pads for pilots that are awesome. You can even get them on Amazon in gel, memory foam, suede, pleather, lycra, just about anything you want and trash the cheap plastic OEM pads. When they're on your head all day you have to be comfortable. Happened to talk to my buddy today and he has an original set of those dies Speedy made for him. Even he didn't know the 'S' stood for Speedy.

Yep, man that sucks. I did this years ago with a 308 winchester. The recoil was most impressive. Blew the primer. At the time I was nervous, but after i got home and thought about what had just transpired I was sick. If you are having one of those days were the phone is ringing, visitors or just an off day, don't load! Catch a calm day, it could save your face! Just saying ! Great tips by the way! Good luck at your match! May you have the smallest groups, all day long!

For rifle cartridges, I still use a balance scale for every round. Hand scoop 90% of target powder weight, finish with a powder trickler (or hand scoop). Visually verify all rounds by looking down the neck. A big batch is 50 rounds for me.

I'm going to have to try the clr cleaner, never thought about that even though I use it for engine cooling systems. You're exactly right about focusing on what you're doing, I put my phone in the fridge turn the radio on then start setting cams, valves, injectors, pump timing etc. Making someone mad for not answering the phone is cheaper than blowing up a high dollar engine!

Love the honesty. It's good to know that even pro's make mistakes occasionally. When loading I leave all devices upstairs BUT that doesn't mean distractions still don't happen. (dogs need to be let out/in etc) The device part is about to change though. Just got my V3 autotrickler. (this is going to be such a godsend compared to how I was doing my powder charges) Could run it from the scale buttons but it's so much easier from the phone when bumping charges. ;-) Good luck with the match!
@rhcockrum87464 жыл бұрын
Erik, I have been reloading for 45 years. I have made some mistakes as well. Luckily I was never hurt. Fortunately, you weren't hurt either. I have always learned from my mistakes,. Sometimes we can learn more from the bad things, than we learn from the good things. Thank-you for sharing your story. It took a good, honest man to admit what happened. To me, this makes your videos even more credible than ever. I will start triple checking my powders charges from now on. Maybe you didn't get the necessary development and testing done, but you are still in one piece. That's what matters.

Here's a tip for you Erik I keep my load data on the computer as an XL file after i have hand written everything through load development. I print a copy of the current data referenced by serial number of the rifle. ( I have three rifles in 6mmXC that can interchange brass as the chambers are within .002" of each other) So when I go to do my loading session i do not rely on memory. I pull out the folder, open to the page with the data for the rifle I'm making ammo for and go from there. this way there is less chance of a simple mistake like this happening. Write everything down

Don’t get distracted! Best advice for hand loading. I had a brown-pants moment once that wasn’t due to distraction. +200 FPS in SIG 357 😵💫 It was a process error. Stopped immediately and didn’t go forward until I figured out what the problem was.

Fast burning powder for this bullet/caliber (much room) ? You can try to choose a powder that gives a better filling ratio to avoid this. I cant add so much powder to my loads but I had another issue with distraction : no powder at all which may be dangerous if your bullet get stuck into the barrel. Now i double check all my cases with a light just before seating the bullets

I learned not to trust myself as well. Now, after reloading, I carefully load a round double checking everything, I then weigh my final cartridges and compare them to the "check round" to check for errors. Occasionally I find I need to pull and reload. This final check has saved me a lot of head aches.

Thanks for the shell holder kinetic disassembler technique. I'm going to try it out on some dummy loads when I get home. My little rubber bands are becoming brittle and dying. (EDIT: It did indeed work. The .223 dummy I pulled apart had so much neck tension I nearly ripped the rim off - probably partly corroded from lying around in the wrong place - but it came out eventually.) The rifles I own are off-the-shelf (one is milsurp .303 British!) and not capable of anywhere near the precision and accuracy you demand from your guns, but some of what I'm seeing here is still quite an eye-opener and I see it being very relevant to my .223 Rem shooting. Subscribed.
