Of course, I might be wrong and the actual etymology of the word is something completely different, but that's how it seems.

@@Heybuditsme hey, that's weird, I can't find the video. I definitely remember the guitar player having a device by the bridge of his guitar that looked very much like a kalimba. It was the same idea as in this video. I remember watching it and thinking that's the coolest shit ever. Haha. Just dig around on old fleet foxes videos, I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Very cool, but it would be nice to hear more of the base instrument sound before jumping directly into the crazy effect haze stuff even if you think it might be underwhelming.

The crazy effect stuff IS the instrument. It's effectively just an electric kalimba AND a guitar. There's no sonic uniqueness. The base instrument sounds like a kalimba or a guitar. Effecting the kalimba through a pickup is the instrument. The base instrument is kalimba with a pickup. They did play that.

I love all the expirements and I love Simon but sometimes I wish they didnt run the sound through quite as many petals all the time. Sometimes it just makes it hard to apprecatiate the uniqueness of that particular sound.

This suggests some additional ideas to me. Either mounting it removable, like on the liitle-seen bridge pickup cover of a tele, or using it to actuate the strings like a gizmotron, by either connecting it to the bridge, or to a string treatment, like an alligator clip
