OMG.....Myer,...I couldn't believe how you could find my brother barber shop... It is one other best barber in Bahirdar. However, I am so sorry about the way you get treated there. Barbers don't know any English......if Smie( the owner) was their it could be better. Bro next time if come to Bahir Dar, let me know I have to sponsor for all your time in bahirdar....and I will make sure I have good time. You are such a positive guy bro....I really appreciate all the efforts you try to build the images of the country....Thank you!

Awesome videos brother! Your Amharic is getting better and better….minamin minamin had me laughing. If I may suggest, While “Selam new” to greet, you should use “Tena yistilgn”, specially when you greet ppl older than you. It means let God bless you with a great heath.

@Myer: thanks for another very interesting take on Bahir-dar. That city looks clean & orderly because it & Awassa [Hawassa, in local Sidama language] were the first "planned towns/cities" in Ethiopia in the 1960s-70s (?). The inspiration for the planned city came from the Italian-built city of Asmara (Eritrea) & even the idea of lining the main streets with palm trees was copied from Asmara. In fact, the palm trees that line the streets of Bahir-dar are identical to those that line the streets of Asmara (Eritrea) as the seeds for these came from Asmara's older palm trees planted by the enterprising Italians from the 1890s -1900s(?). An Italians-trained Eritrean architect played a major role in the planning process of the town of Bahir-dar & Awassa (Hawassa) too (?). ALSO, the industrious & creative Italians left behind many other legacies in Ethiopia beside in architecture & town planning. All those fantastic coffee drinks, coffee+ macchiato shops, coffee+macchiato drinking tradition are ALL the legacies of the Italian colonisrs of Abyssinia/Ethiopia. The Italians also left behind a strong "spaghetti/pasta" preparing & eating tradition in Ethiopia. The oldest & famous coffee+macchiato bars plus the first & oldest coffee roasting+grinding businesses found in Addis/Ethiopia were all started by the Italians but, of course, to serve the Italian soldiers, officials, settlers, etc. Many of these old & famous coffee+macchiato bars are still located in the 'Piaza' district of Addis [Piaza = an Italian for a 'Plaza' or 'town square']. Some of these Italian legacies were left behind directly by the actual Italians who colonised Ethiopia for a short 5 years. Others - the more lasting ones - were transferred to Ethiopia through the Eritreans whose region was colonised by the Italians for nearly 80 years! After independence, the region of Eritrea was annexed by Emperor Haile Selassie who turned it into just another province of Ethiopia - thus sowing the seeds for a 30-years long & very bloody civil war known as 'The Eritrean war for liberation'. That war ended with the separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia in 1991 by turning Ethiopia into 'the most populous landlocked country in the world! [120+ million very poor Ethiopians right now]'. Many of the coffee+macchiato bars plus the spaghetti restaurants in Addis were first run by the more Italianated Eritreans. Even many of the better-known & high-class barber shops in Addis were started first by the Italians & then run by the Eritreans .. There you have it. Now, let me wait for some "very patriotic Ethiopians" to come & attack me for exposing their "secrets to foreigners" [SMILE]. This is the case because the realty in Ethiopia contradicts with the patriotic narrative that many Ethiopians have been filled-with since childhood that claims that "Ethiopia is the only country in black Africa that was never been colonised" [NOT TRUE, OF COURSE]. But, when you remind them about all the Italian left legacies & influences that come in the form of Italian-style coffee+macchiato bars; the strong & Italian-style macchiato+coffee drinking culture; the spaghetti preparation & consuming culture, etc, .. they rather don't want to be reminded about the obvious contradiction. PS: in southern & more wetter regions of Ethiopia which are considered to be the "birthplace of coffee"; traditionally, coffee is not consumed as "a drink" but the coffee beans are "fried & eaten". That was & still is a traditional way of consuming coffee in many parts of southern Ethiopia (homeland of coffee) PLUS in other parts of Eastern Africa too. The idea/tradition of roasting coffee beans & turning the resulting powdered coffee into a drink is, rather, an alien tradition/concept that came to Ethiopia/Africa via the Yemenis/Arabs first & later-on from the Turks. The Italians improved on the Arabs-introduced coffee drinking tradition in Ethiopia & even improved on it by adding the macchiato & expresso-coffee making culture+bars in Ethiopia. Of course, many Ethiopians haven't got a clue about most of what I am telling you as they are not taught at schools, etc. In fact, it is not clear what exactly they teach in Ethiopian schools & households beside various religious dogmas, mostly inaccurate bits on Ethiopia & lots of 'patriotic myths' passed as 'history' such as the famous one that claims that 'Ethiopia is the only black African country that was never colonised'. As you have noted, there are way too many orthodox church festivals/celebrations in many parts of Ethiopia. No wonder that Ethiopia progresses at a glacial pace & improvement in the living standards of the Ethiopians is so slow .. some say non-existent. Ahhh. Nagaatti/bye.
