If you want to go hatyai there is special train that you could catch from alor star direct. should ask the KTM station people. the van at padang besar border most are meant for group

At the border the guy with motorbike said he bring you to padang besar van station/ mini bus. If you take the van at border you need to wait until the van full enough then straight to hatyai. Because there is no bus from padang besar to hatyai

You blew it. There is immigration and a scheduled train from Pedang Besar to Hat Yai. Simple and easy. Only a short walk from where you alight from the train.
