The reno is done very well and looks quite solid. I would add a split stone face around all edges of the painted area and around the doorway and window so it blends in with the stone work on the rest of your home. I think the painted area would look very good then. The stone would be like a veneer finish that would enhance this part of the structure well. I would also bury the downspout from the eves trough underground where it meets the ground. Just make sure you put a screen at the top so the debris and leaves do not plug it. Your home is so beautiful and you should be so proud of what you have accomplished. Loved the video and thank you for letting us comment on the painted area.

Since I live in the US, I did sign up for your newsletter regarding alignment. I recently resigned from my nursing job withe a US Navy clinic due to the overwhelming increasing toxic work environment they were creating. Before and after I left, multiple people have left as well for the same reason. Sometimes I have regret for leaving but then I talk to friends still there and hearing nothing has changed I then feel I made the right decision. I am going to be 54 in April so we are gearing up for retirement lifestyle in the next few years which means a move to another area of the US. Right now I have a booth in an antique store and sell antiques and collectables as well as my DIY crafts. I love the brocante videos... I love looking for treasures. Thank you

Hi there! I am a RN also, but work as an Admitting Case Manager in the Field (pre-COVID), but working @ home since March 2020. Previously I visited Patients @ Hospitals in Los Angeles, California to evaluate them in ICU in-order to transfer to LTAC. I used to have an Antique Booth in Santa Monica,CA back in the early 2000’s. I moved to Paris in 2004-2006 to attend Christiés Education to study 17Th, 18th, & 19th French Furniture. So when I returned to the US & tried to open my own Antique Store in Beverly Hills, the Rent on 1,000 Square Feet was about $20,000 per month! The Economy was starting to fall apart & it was too risky @ that time. I went back to Nursing… I am curious about where you worked @ a Military Clinic? Also where is your Antique Business? I am available to give you some ideas about reinventing your Nursing Career if you’re interested. Take Care!

I don't think the color is as bad as you think. The color will fade over time and with your 70's stoneware with the muted colors of the clay, I think it will look beautiful. Often, what we are concerned with ends up turning out ok.

You are so right about the idea of having beautiful things around you. Why else do they say that one shouldn't work in clutter. I know that when there is too much stuff around me , I can't think and I have to immediately start cleaning up. I have started to put fresh flowers , candles and softly playing music on when I start to work. I love a pretty plate when I eat freshly baked lemon pound cake. I use a pretty plate in the morning when I have a slice to toast. Anything to just lift me just a bit, you know. It makes me feel so grand too...lol..Thank you so much for stressing this incredibly important point! As for the wall..hmmm....that to me is something you should live with for a bit. Something will call to you and you'll know right away. It might be to just let the plant grow across the wall, something as simple as that. I was also thinking you could create a vibe that is condusive to that wall. I don't know what it could be ,but again..you probably have to live with for a bit to see what messages you're getting 🙂. Thank you so much for all that you share!!

I had a similar wall color problem in an old house in Puerto Rico. I resolved it in doing a color wash in an exterior grout compound. I loved it afterward. It look as time worn as the original rendered plaster on the 18th century walls.

I see what you mean about the color but it’s not entirely off. It needs more dimension, which could be achieved with a white wash to tone it down. The method would bring it closer to the varied colors within the adjacent stone finish wall. You may pick a new color but I think you would feel the same way since it would be just the one color. New next to old does that sometimes. Also, I agree with you about the edging to the window and door. The lines are too straight and need a stone edging. Is there a stone veneer type product the contractor could recommend? Or maybe old weathered shutters hung on either side of both the window and door would give it the texture it needs. I think you would be happy with those 2 changes and adding the ivy as you mentioned. Regardless it is a fun beautiful project. Yes, you are fortunate to have such worries. 😊

It would be wonderful if we could white wash this! That is not an option the builders mentioned. What would the method be? Could you elaborate on that? Because the even color is indeed what I dislike most and that won’t change when we paint it another color…

@@FrenchCountryLife It would be a similar process that you applied to the wood furniture in one of your videos. A watered down paint that is applied. Take your time deciding and consult with local artisans. Not knowing the base finish and texture, I wouldn’t want to give you wrong application approach. I’m sure others have done this in your area. Get some ideas on KZbin also. I’m sure it can be beautiful

Possibly just repaint the wall a medium gray color to blend with the stone. (Paint is not very expensive here in the US, I don't know about France. And repainting is fairly quick because you won't need to redo all the prep work.) When picking the gray color choose a little darker, because the sunlight will washout the color. Can you paint the white edging. As others have suggested, the wall will "age", plants will really help. Once the wall paint ages, you may be fine with it. Right now it is a big wall, freshly painted, too bright, and does not look good. Age and plants will greatly help. To my eyes, the wall definitely needs some trim around the door and window. I think used wood, a bit of distressed wood trim could look really good. Don't make the distressed wood look artificial/tacky though. The used wood trim would be fine if it didn't all match. It doesn't all need to be the exact same width all around the opening. Maybe a wider piece on top and narrower pieces on the sides, etc. Look at old buildings, you will see these variations. Maybe at used building supply places or if you see something being torn down you could get this used wood very cheap or maybe free. Used, older wood is more difficult to cut though, but a carpenter with a good saw would be able to do it. Maybe get a used solid wood door, or used shutters. Here, paint stores make lots of mistakes when mixing colors. I painted my house with paint that the color was mixed wrong, I got the paint for almost free. It was a medium gray color that I probably would not have chosen, but it is a completely neutral color. There are several gray colors to be aware of. There are warm grays and cool grays. There are blueish grays and greenish grays. there are pinkish grays. Start by carefully looking at the gray colors of the stones. the stones will have a mix of these various grays in them, but one of the colors may be more common. I don't mind the yellow wall. But I do think it could look a whole lot better for not much money. I don't think you should feel anything negative about changing the color. A painter could repaint in less than 2 hours, maybe one hour. And since all the prep work is done, you could buy yourself a roller, pan. and brush and paint this wall yourself in less than half a day. Watch some KZbin vids. Try to get paint that already has the primer mixed in, it does cost more, never use cheap paint. To get the top edges, tape your brush onto a broom or rake handle, so you can reach the top edges. Probably good to have a friend hold the ladder for you. Just relooked at the wall, it's pretty high. really best to have the painter do it, you don't want to fall. Trying to add "aging" to the wall will look very tacky, unless you spend a gob of money on some expensive artist/designer. Don't even go there. Don't feel bad about this very minor mistake, just repaint it, and don't look back, otherwise, you will continue to cringe and feel bad every time you look at it for the next 5-10 years. We all make plenty of mistakes when renovating our homes, just be grateful this was a cheap one. Even contractors make mistakes, they add this unavoidable cost of doing business right into the bid. You have found yourself a beautiful, home with lots of history and soul. Enjoy the process. All the best to you.

Good morning from the US! I agree, it may be a bit too yellow. Can you get some color samples and paint larger patches so you can see it for a few weeks in all lights? That’s what I do in my home. Maybe lean toward something more beige or “greige” as we say in the states. I would look at trimming the door and windows with similar stone to match the current structure. I feel that would help them blend together. But it’s very difficult when you’re combining old with new. More mistakes are going to happen so be nice to yourself and go with the process! ❤️ It’s going to work out!

Merci, merci pour ces jolis mots ma belle amie !! I was delighted to discover the beautiful and authentic person behind the scenes. You know, restoring a house always gets us in trouble at one time or another. This is the problem with modern coatings, the reflections of the material and the warmth of old-fashioned coatings are missing. But vegetation always softens its surroundings. The ivy will again make a nice evergreen backdrop, but in this situation I would also wonder if the climbing hydrangea could be a good option with a nice presence even in winter despite the deciduous leaves and its delicate flowering in summer. I would gladly plant a "Ghislaine de Féligonde" rosebush at the level of the gutter for its sunset shades and its slender stems, it would make a smooth transition between the two buildings. I would see a large oval zinc pot (brocante) filled with deep blue and white flowers on the windowsill to focus attention. March should be a good month for these plantations...

Yes~ I am not a fan of that type of rendering done with cement. I think you should have done enduit a la chaux. Since you asked our humble opinion ;). It is not the colour as much as the rendering type (though agree perhaps a bit too yellow & plastic trim, not good). My husband and I learned to do chaux enduit ourselves (very do-able once you get the hang of it- and remarkably beautiful). Nevertheless, you should be able to find a mason to do that exterior wall in chaux. Imho it is important for historic French properties ~

For me (on the video at least), I feel the wall works very well and I like the colour a lot! I would add more interest with plants to hide the ‘corners’, perhaps add some other rustic touches with old wooden implements, ladders or old windows 🪟? I’m sure you’ll find a beautiful solution. I’d also thought about a ‘fresco’ look for the wall, like an aged look blending of a number of different but similar colours? I’m not explaining that well....I hope you know what I mean 🙏

To be honest, how well the wall looks on video already, you are aware of the fact that it isn't the way you would want it to be. And I am afraid that feeling will last, eventhough it looks lovely and will look even better when the ivy grows and such. If you have the opportunity to make the wall just a tint lighter, and remove the corner strips, I would try to go for it. You are still in the process of renovating the main house anyway, so this seems like the moment. And in my humble opinion it is about momentum and following your gut feeling. In the end, you will know what works best for you and the result will turn out fine, just like your other projects. You are wonderfully creative people. Ca va aller... Alles komt goed! ;)

I agree color is off but I know color doesn’t translate well. In my mind, I’m thinking a creamy white with maybe hint of grey paint. Maybe stone and plaster around top and part way down sides of the door and wall that is like the rest of the house. I believe the problem is not just the color but that it looks new and perfect. Or, Maybe a real heavy plaster finish, or Bricks, painted the new color then distressed. I do think it is good to put things in perspective. So much suffering in this world. I believe it is good to do what we can to make our surroundings beautiful but also always be grateful for what we have and put a priority on how we can help others. 👍🏼

Agree! The problem was that the rendering has about 4 different colors and that the choice in colors for the wall (because it is not paint) was limited so we had to pick the one that was closest but I knew there was none that was exactly what I felt was right which is why a few weeks before they would start the work I had called them to ask to come review our color choice with us because I thought we hadn’t picked the right one. But they haven’t come and showed up all of a sudden to do the work and the materials had already been bought… 😒

Thank Goodness for beautiful channels such as yours....with quality content and real life meaning ...prachtig (my best friend is Dutch) ♥ From a design perspective , the wall is a bit stark in comparison to the aged stone, however it is only because it is new. With time and aging it will blend in. You could, if you are terribly unhappy with it, add some stone around the door or in random spots. This might be difficult though now on the end result. you could test with a stone tile. If anything , it still looks beautiful. A fusion of old and new. As I'm in Australia....the magpies don't ever stop.....along with the rosellas...they are the neighbourhood gossips.!

How about a lighter colour similar to the shade surrounding the window behind you in the video and closer to the light gravel of your walkways. You could do a big trellis on the wall left corner and over half way to the right in the same green as the patio and then have the ivy climb over that trellis but in meantime you would have the wood and green to create texture and coordinating color scheme until the ivy grows. Another thing, although expensive here in France, very large pots, 3, in a color you look either the green patio color or.... and plant big plants in the pots to grow up the wall and give it a distraction to a big giant blank wall. Its hard when picking a swatch for such a giant wall. Also, would it be possible for them to do a wash/stain over the existing to give it a more antiqued wash and color? Those were the 3 that came to mind right away :-) Bon Chance

I think the Pierre de Taille est charmant… The Stone could be added to the Outside Wall, like a Stone Veneer. We have Veneers made of Stone in the US, but not sure about France. The Stone Veneer comes in large sections which makes it easier to attach it… The Stone on the Facade of your House gives so much Character. My 2nd Suggestion is to build a Trellis against the yellow wall, with Bougainvillea growing on the Trellis

I see what you mean . I won’s say it’s horrible, but it’s a bit to yellow and neat. I can image you would have a more neutral tone, more natural rustic look. The white edges I haven’t noticed in earlier video’s, but in real life its maybe more visible. I probably would change that. And add some climbing plants to the yellow wall. Maybe some ‘wilde wingerd’, wisteria, bougainville or grapes. Some plants will make it a bit more rustic as well. Good luck with the decision!

Hi Marloes, I really really like the colour of the wall! The colour will weather and soften, having greenery around or on it will be very beautiful. I’m hoping that you would consider Virginia Creeper for the greenery? In autumn the changes of the colours of the leaves will suit the original buildings too. I like others suggestion of placing faux stones around the window and door. It is great to have a vision; is is also great to adapt to changes. Regards from Susan at Hobart, Tasmania.

Hmm.. I think I can see what you mean Marloes. I think it’s needs to be lighter.. more like the colour of the stone of the little window frame along your brick wall.. to tie the colour together? And remember, you have to look at it every day & if you’re not happy, it will bug you! This is something you can change, some things we can’t & have to live with it. So, if it bothers you, it bothers you, so change it 😊 Maybe try several colours .. to get the one you want? How about a wisteria for that wall? I made a similar mistake years ago on the outside of our 2 story stucco house; the color was just too yellow and I absolutely hated it and was not willing to live with it. Thankfully the painters had only done one wall so I went back to the paint store and picked a much lighter off white shade. So we basically had to pay the painters twice for one wall but it was so worth it in the long run.

I would embrace the color, put up some interesting trellises and plant some roses or vines to grow up them. At the end of the day I think you want more of a bone color, not grey or yellow. It is fixable. It is lovely.

A lot of useful information is being shared there! And glad to hear my videos are helpful, I wouldn't really think they are as I am just sharing what we're doing here :) If ever you have any questions, just leave them in a comment! How disappointing about the wall, I completely understand and I sense that you aren’t too bothered by the color but more importantly that a decision was made without your consent. That’s the biggest disappointment, it seems. Good news though, colors can be changed and I’m sure that they can remove that border-thing if that’s what you ultimately decided.I think a more gray tone would compliment the exposed stone on the other sideI love the exposed stone btw! Once your ivy grows it will look great! We have mostly Virginia Creeper ivy on our facade and I was told that they grow really fast! Keep us posted! All the best.

Hello. I have just discovered you and this video. For me and my taste, I would paint the wall a cream color, or off-white as we call it in the States. Even match the color to the gravel. Also, I would add wood trim as much as possible to match the style of the original building. And, if possible, reroute that downspout that is in the way. Best wishes 🙂

The paint colour looked great to me, until you mentioned that you wanted to match it to the older part of the building. You are right, it does have a more modern look. However in England we are used to seeing that. It's very fashionable for people to buy old buildings, keep the original parts, but add modern extensions and adaptations. Usually the interior is a mix of traditional and modern. It's what people aim for. The building looks a warm colour, I like it. But if you want a traditional looking building, I can see why you're disappointed. It's easy to rectify. Put paint samples on, and even paint it yourself or a contractor, now or at a later date.

Hi, when i first saw the buildings, they did look off to me. Ideally, if at all possible, I would try to unify them by finding, buying and putting up the coral stone walls found on the front building, even if they are cut and it's only a facade. That's my honest opinion. Thank you.

yes first world problems right ? But it's good to be aware that in the end it's only that, which as you said it doesn't mean that we don't have to make things the best way possible, but it's always good to calm down our minds when they take control :) I actually love the color, find it very smooth and calming. But I would not put ivy again, I think that ivy is beautiful but it ruins the walls, why not some wisteria (or bouganvilliers - sorry don't know the name in english) ? That would look wonderful in the summer if you keep that color (or go for some other kind of beigy color). Hope you'll find what you are looking for :)

Yes I love wisteria! I am just a bit worried about all the leaves coming off on the gravel terrace, that ‘s a lot of work 🙈 But bottom line; it needs plants! I know ivy destroys the wall but for this specific wall the risk is low and it will be fine. Thank you for your suggestions!

Hello Marloes, I see your dilemma, your home does really need to reflect the colors and features you like, so, you are happy. While I can see that the color of the house could have been better in a lighter color, I also agree that the color you have is ok and that with a few details, whether it's plants, shutters or other elements, it will blend better with time. With respect to the trim. it really does not go with the house, the lines of the house are more organic, so, I would have it removed and have them, like, round up the corners, by hand, so, it will be more natural... I guess you can see other parts of the property where you have a similar situation. If you still are not too happy, what about using the same material that you have on the other wall, stone and cement? and do the same around the door and the window (frame)? You could also just paint a trim (similar color to the frame of the other window .. .... Best. Evelyn

You just learned a tough lesson on colour, be careful with warm tone colours, they pull easily too yellow\ gold or orange. On camera, the stone looks gray/ cool, l would take a piece of the stone to your paint store and find colour chips that blends well with the stone. Take home the best choices and put them on the stone to see which one looks best. Look at different times of day, morning light to evening, find the shade that works best overall.

Is the yellow painted on afterwards or blended into the final application? Depending on which direction the house faces the paint may fade over time. Was this an addition or a renovation? The windows and door frames should match the existing windows with concrete frames. It would have be nice to have some stone as well in the addition. It looks fine, but does it add any value to the overall house and land. These are the questions I would ask myself. Good luck. Love the videos. Regards from Central Texas.

I can understand your disappointment, it looks very modern compared to the rest of the building. I would say no to growing ivy on the wall. The suckers on the ivy plant destroy the wall. If you want to soften or hide the wall, place some trellis and grow some flowering plants eg climbing roses, lilac, clematis. Speak to a local garden centre and see what grows best in your area, but please not ivy.

I agree with you, beautiful things that we love around us makes us feel better and more positive. I know I would always look at the wall in the wrong color that I paid to be painted and it would always bother me, even with plants along the foundations and climbing roses or clematis, it would simply bug me. The plastic around the frames should be covered somehow, this is what I mean in terms of an artisans sense of aesthetics. Taking natural materials and adding a bright white piece of plastic....does that make sense? We live close to Cahors in the Lot. I am so blessed to have great artisan /associates who now know me well and can almost read my mind when I mention small details they did not think of earlier in our journey. I hope they can take away a bit of this when working with other clients. Life is a process....we all continue to learn!

Joke
