I would like to make shoes for virtual reality. Basically; shoes that are worn while in VR gear, that allow the computer to know where your trying to walk. It would do this with the help of some kind of harness, belt, or bar, to keep you from physically moving forward or backward, while at the same time helping to prevent you from falling. The shoes would preferably be as close to frictionless as can be managed given the design constraints like money, equipment size, durability, and ease of maintenance. The shoes, or something else, would keep track of the movements of the feet, and make special note of when the feet start and stop making contact with the ground. The foot movement data, together with the ground contact timing data, would work together to give the computer movement instructions for the user's virtual character. Imagine their foot like a finger on a touchscreen or lapt trackpad, which, instead of moving a mouse pointer or scrolling down a page, would tell the computer where, when, and how the user wants to use their feet to move around. Things like this exist already. But all the ones I've seen have been either awkward to use, or super expensive. There are also VR gloves being developed by multiple different groups, that do fancy things like track fing movements and provide force feedback for better tactility in VR object interactions. But I haven't heard of any VR shoes that track how you wiggle your toes. I guess I understand how hands would be more important, because we use them for basically everything. But I think toes can be important too. So if I made VR shoes, they would track toe movement. Some people use their toes a lot more than others, actually. And have retained flexibility and trained their coordination. So some people may even find it more useful than me. I would personally just like it because it's neat.

@@KatrinaDancer I have to do everything in heels. I got bullied in school for wearing shoes with heels on, and could not be bothered repeating myself every time someone asked lol
@World_Theory3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. The exact attachment method for the heels was not shown. Just that they were going to be screwed on the bottom somehow. After some thinking, here's my guess on how to do it… The heel would potentially be subject to significant forces, causing wear on the attachment point. So I think it would be worth it to have a sturdy connection there. I know that it is difficult to use screws with soft matterials, because the head of the screws are often too small to distribute force widely enough to prevent damage to the material they're anchoring in place, or are anchored to. If you can not use different materials for the whole of the shoe, then a small piece of strong material needs to be added, to reinforce the attachment point. In this case, I would use a couple small plates of metal, like aluminium or stainless steel, to sandwich the floor material of the shoe between. These metal plates need not be overly thick. They should however, have pre-drilled countersunk holes for the screws, to allow the head of the screw to be flush with the surface of the plate. This alone would not be a desirable end product, because the edge of the metal plate would be a ridge that the wearer could potentially feel, and cause discomfort. Therefore, I assume that an extra layer of material would be added to the floor of the shoe, excluding the shape of the metal plate, so that the extra material is flush with the plate. On top of this, I assume you would put some kind of removable cloth, gel, or foam insert for comfort or breathablility. I'm not entirely sure that you would even need two plates per shoe. One plate, on the inner side of the floor of the shoe may be enough, if the heel piece is wide enough to not cause damage as the weight of the foot rests on it. I should also note that I think multiple screws-at least three-should be used equidistantly on the attachment point. This is because one or even two, screws are relatively unstable. The length of the screw should also be chosen to be as long as possible without sticking out the end of the heel, if the heel piece is a soft enough material, because short screws are more vulnerable to being pulled out due to weak anchoring material. This is a problem I've encountered with drywall sheeting for example. Though hopefully whatever the shoes are being made from is stronger that drywall.
