A few of you have suggested that I try make a pen as it makes a great beginners project for the lathe. But seeing as I have previously made a pen I decided to challenge myself by using Black Palm; a notoriously difficult material to work, new Skew techniques, and a superglue finish.
It didn't go well.

Quick tip Matt, If you’re going to turn more pens buy a mandrill saver, this is a little accessory that replaces the tail stock, the mandril goes through the saver and therefor you’ll have all the pressure on the metal rings instead of the mandril and therefore you can’t bend the mandril and your blanks can’t slip.

Try using the Hampshire Sheen Carnacrystaline wax - melts into the wood at high speed so, especially with a couple of layers, it gives a sturdy and reliable high gloss finish :)

I had the same problem with no activater. Didn’t have the cloth problems because I used a thick piece of paper. Also had the white pieces from trying to correct it after sanding. I thought at the time if I had activator and turned it on a for few between coats it would have turned out better but it wasn’t noticed by the recipient.

Hey Matt! I’m in the US. I’m currently serving in the navy and also, after 6 years and 9 months of service I’m on my way out. I’ll be a civilian. I have a decent job lined up but my desire is woodworking. For the next couple years I’ll have time to work on the weekends for sure. I thank you for the tips to help my transition, believe it or not. Civilian life is one of the scariest things to me. Secondly, I thank you for the knowledge you have, along with the silliness you have. I can relate lol. I don’t know if I’ll ever be good enough to sell a piece of furniture. But I damn sure will try. Thanks again from across the pond. Take it easy friend.

I love seeing you challenging yourself and admitting problems when you have them. I'm enjoying the series a lot! As for the CA finish, you don't want to use an activator with the finish, it caused it to bubble up and you'll get spots in your finish. You really need to give it about 5 minutes between coats, or until completely dry. I usually start with a thin to seal the pen and do a couple thin coats, but then go to a medium or thicker, but put on thin coats. I also keep the lathe on and keep it on it's slowest speed when I apply the finish, it feels like it helps get an even and thin coat, but that could just be my imagination. Whatever you put on has to fully cure, you can't wipe off any excess as it will cause the sticking of the paper or cloth towel. If you start seeing problems in the finish, you can use a 220 sandpaper to take the finish off and start over. I've had to do that a couple times, it's not fun, but salvages the pen. The reason people do 7 coats is because they are really thin, but also leveling out the finish to give that nice even shine can sometimes eat through the coats and get you back to bare wood. It's a really awesome finish when you get it right, I've done several pens and few bentwood lamination rings, super fun stuff. Keep it up!

@@fullerwoodworksatx3494 thanks for the info. I've never used activator on a finish, only on attaching pieces and it left bubbles around the edges. Maybe I'll do some experimenting.

Keeping the lathe on while applying (at slowest speed) causes a buffing action and that is what you want. This also helps force the glue down into the wood fibers rather than sit on the top. I usually let this dry 10 to 15 minutes just to be safe. No, I do not use and activator.

Yeah, actually Woodcraft even sells a ca glue finishing kit which has activator, thin, medium, and a few gloss & satin polishing compounds. Works great & yes.... the lathe must be on at its slowest speed!! I make wood rings & pens every week & use a ca finish almost exclusively... just a little more practice and Matt will be a pro and likely better than me!!

I swear I'm the same way with a fail like that. I used to stop, get more and more frustrated and then never finish things. Now I learn my lesson, salvage what I can, and come back with a vengeance later on another project. My success rate and craftsmanship has really benefited from me failing to completion now. Great vid Matt!!

Thats a really good first (ish) pen! I like to keep it simple and tend to use a chestnut sanding sealer followed by carnauba wax at a really high speed to build up the friction until the heat melts the wax and the pen is left with a high gloss finish thats quite hard. I did use CA glue but I tend to be clumsy enough that using it on the barrel might leave me with glued fingers

Matt, don't think of it as having the tool rest just below center for your gouges. Position the tool rest wherever it needs to be so that the *tool* contacts the material just above center. For carbide tipped tools, position the tool rest such that the tool contacts the material center, or just above center, when you go straight in.

Nice job on the pen Matt! Turned out really nice, I've seen the black palm a few times at my local wood supplier but never used it for anything as I've always heard it's a pain to work with. There are so many ways to finish pens it all comes down to personal preference. I do a mix of CA and Friction Polish just depends on my mood and wood I'm working with. My latest, if you're looking for a real challenge in pen turning, is making bespoke / kitless pens... maybe something for a future video!

I worked as an engineering tech using super glue to attach sensors to metal aircraft structures for vibration and stress testing. If we ever had a sensor detach all of the super glue had to be removed because super glue doesn’t adhere to itself. If we tried to reattach a sensor by applying more glue it never worked. My two cents to the conversation. Nice video, I really like the level of details you provide. Thanks!

hey matt! ive had quite a bit of experience with the micromesh pads, and theyre whats causing the cloudiness; basically, when your going higher and higher into the grits it gets finer and finer, and the friction increases creating qite a bit of heat, which then melts some part of the pad and u end up screwing up the pad and getting the cloudy look. in terms of fixing, theres nothing ive found to work exept sanding it back down with normal sand paper. sometimes adding a lubricant such as water can help lower the chances of this happening in the future, but this happens to me all the time and the micromesh is the culprit! i love them tho and their finnish is unmachable so i still use them, but im 99.9999 percent sure thats whats going on here. happy days! liam

I usually only use 2-3 cotes of light CA glue and no activater, leaving about an hour between coats. I also apply the CA glue while the lath is running at its slowest speed, but work fast, and proper ventilation unless, you are looking to have your eyes burnt out. I ended up on my knees and crying in the middle of the garden after I was hit by the fumes
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with the others about needing the activator and keeping the lathe running on a slow speed. On your pen perhaps you could have started over with sand paper to get the lint off. The micro mesh pads are great but not for that kind of work. They actually burnish the wood. I use them before applying finish. Just remember that, as with all forms of woodworking, there are as many opinions and ways to do things as there are woodworkers. Just continue to experiment and have fun doing it.

I'm a mechanical engineer full time and work on milling machines and metal turning lathes. As a general rule you're right when it comes to not wearing clothes as they can get caught and pose a risk of entanglement, sucking you in. However those latex clothes that you were wearing are often seen as fine because they're so easy to tear, they'll just rip before pulling your hand in.

Well okay, you should have been trying out CA glue as flat wood finish learning how to put one layer on, how it behaves, how long it dries, how you apply second layer, what applicator tool you can use and so on! CA glue is just like a high gloss lacquer! You never touch the applied coat, you never buff, never rub, never anything! Only the CA glue should touch the existing layers! Not the tool. You let the glue flow on the material and as fast as possible you stabilize its position otherwise it will make drop beads. If you have a spinner (turner) do the following: Use a turn speed of max 5mm arc on object surface per second. Get a silicon baking paper, tear a longer slice. The width of the slice should be the width of your "lacquer-brush", in your case 4-8mm. Fold the paper slice in half so at the bend it will have some strength. Apply enough CA glue to the where the bend is and put it under (!) the spinning object. It will take the smallest amount of CA glue as possible upon touch and as it's turning it will make a full coat on the pen. Take the "brush" away and stop the turner to wait to dry. You will need about 5-12min till you can softly glue another layer. Only glue should touch glue! During application. Think about it as a very messy type of lacquer. You only add CA glue when previous layer is hard. You can sand with 320 or higher when layer is hard as plastic (usually 20-30min). Never use chemicals which can dull CA or do any mishaps. Very important: whenever an optical mistake happens, you stop immediately. You wait till complete hardened dryness. Min. 20-60 minutes. Then you sand it back (240-320) completely untill the optical issue is sanded down. Then you can go with slow turning glue-touches-glue only layering again. CA glue is very messy if you don't know its behavior. You should practice on small veneer to see how glass like shine and thick layer finish you can make to wood with it. - But it demands professional patience -

Nice pen! I don’t think it turned out that bad. Lots of good suggestions in the comments here already so I’ll just share one of my tips: On thin line pen kits where the tolerance between the brass tube and the hole you drilled in the blank are super tight...using superglue may be problematic for some people. If the tube jams at all while installing it, the glue will set up and you’re out of luck. I recommend Gorilla Glue, instead. Yes, it is water activated and that is an additional step. BUT, you get to decide when to activate the glue. It also expands and creates a really solid bond. I’ve had problems when I first started out, where the super glue has let loose on me. Turns out it will melt if things get too hot. I also switched to the mechanical pencil kits, when I was learning. They get more use around the wood shop, it seems.

For super glue/cyanoacrylate, it cures in the absence of oxygen or the presence of an alkali like sodium. That's why it doesn't really dry in air. When you get it on your fingers and squeeze them together, your skin oils and lack of air causes it to react. The activator allows it to cure. If you are doing a fillet that won't be seen, you can use baking soda to activate it too. I guess water is the activator in this situation. Still learning too

Thing about people who only show perfect results is that , for me at least, I'm left feeling inadequate when things don't go right . Not sure about that rest position! all the lathes I've had have been cobbled together from bits and pieces and the one I use now is just a home made attachment in my metalwork lathe with a washing machine motor hanging off the back. I've never had the luxury of being able to put a chisel in the correct position just where it fits. Doing things in non standard ways is where some of the great inovations come from, like the 40/40 gouge.

5-10 minutes between coats will work better...running the lathe at its lowest speed will help prevent it from sagging. Sometimes the any ridges you leave can be quite persistent...make sure to get these out with longitudinal strokes with the 1500X micromesh before using finer grits. I like to wet sand with the micromesh up to 12,000X.

It’s not the plastic gloves you should keep away from the lathe, they won’t pull your hand into it, its the rag to keep away from a lathe. Pen look good from here.

Agree on the rag. I've mangled a mandrel buffing with a rag. I learned to use folded coffee filters to apply CA (and no prob with activator for me) then micromesh and life is good. I also don't breath during application before stepping away from the CA. Keeps me from inhaling fumes at close range and from hovering too long on one coat which can botch the finish. I found medium CA better because some brands are too thin and centrifugal force pulls the finish into waves easily if you apply any more than extremely thin layers.

You may be hurting because A) you're gripping the tools too tight(white knuckle) or B) your lathe may be a little too low/high for you.
