The antenna on the receiver looks to me like a mini helical GPS antenna, the bare SMA is where the VHF antenna is supposed to be attached, it is surprising it is working at all with no antenna! According to the owners manual it runs at 162mhz which has a wavelength of approx. 1.8m so the one it comes with is a short antenna and you'll be able to use increasing long ones including vehicle mounts ones for better range. You can buy a replacement for $17.95
@WimFournier6 күн бұрын
A wavelength of 1.85m equals an antenna length of 46cm (quarter wave). That kind of matches the length on the collar. And yeah, not having an antenna on the receiver is probably the reason for the bad range :D

A couple of others have said similar, but adding a meshtastic network would also help with the dog tracking as well as coms network, you can set up solar powered nodes in the woods and then one portable one on the dog, then when it goes past a node it can update it's location and with the meshtastic network, you could get a very big range.
@DeadlyDragon_13 күн бұрын
meshtastic is going to have the same if not worse issues with trees due to it's higher frequency. 900mhz vs 100mhz. same mechanics as to why 2.4ghz wifi network is seen throughout your home but 5ghz may eventually drop out.

Hey Strangerparts, awesome land, I've loved the CO mountains since I was a kid. You might also consider painting purple rings on trees between your signs. Its a (mostly) universal indicator of no trespassing, no hunting. Not that it will do much good on 100 acres in the mountains, but certainly legal reciprocity. There are also game cameras, (optional solar power accessory battery packs) that will transmit on cellular frequency. Might be a great project for you (without available cell signals) to hack/mod to a local frequency. Would be interesting to see if you could set up higher signal antennas for dog tracking, game camera, even more wifi. Looking forward to your new channel.
@ElectricRanchCO11 күн бұрын
I wasn't aware of purple paint laws previously. I grew up in California, where it's not a thing. But alas, I checked, and it's not a law here in Colorado either. I'd consider doing it anyway, but given that I've never heard of it, I'm worried most other people here in Colorado haven't either. But yeah, we're planning on getting some game cameras setup at some point here. So many projects!

When you're setting up you're own cell network you should look into adding Lora with the meshtastic project. Adding a low power router node with solar to your cell towers. Then you can add a GPS node to your dogs collar which will have a much better range than the Garmins VHF. It also has an app that allows anyone with a node to text eachother and see eachothers location no cell service req. Keen to see you build out this ranch with all the awesome projects you do!

I noticed that SMA connector on the top of the Garmin remote and realised that’s where your VHF antenna should be. I’m going to bet that the reception on that system was crap because it had no antenna connected. The longer the antenna the better when it comes to VHF. If it didn’t come with it, I would suggest buying a replacement from Garmin. I reckon the difference will be night and day.
@RX14isnotaPro14 күн бұрын
There was already an antenna of some kind on top, maybe the unused SMA was for GPS. Though, if the stub antenna was the only VHF antenna on the receiver, I'd definitely recommend a larger one.

@LeonardChurch3314 күн бұрын
I could be wrong but based on the naked SMA stub sticking out of the top, it looks like you were doing the range test without the VHF antenna attached to the handset. That would significantly reduce the range.

@@ElectricRanchCO Based on the product photos it looks like it should have come with one. It looks like a standard walkie-talkie or ham radio handset antenna. At a guess, the little stub antenna on the handheld is probably just for the GPS and then VHF antenna is the link between the collar and then handset, sending telemetry and commands over the lower frequency link. If it's using a protocol like LORA you could get crazy range without a lot of power. Might be fun to take a look at with an SDR.
@jayzo13 күн бұрын
This isn't related to the dog collar, but if you're gonna put a cell tower at a vantage point it might be worth adding a Meshtastic relay node on it too. Looks like a lovely place! If it's something you'd enjoy, then you should set up a few meshtastic nodes about the place. I don't know if it would be better than the VHF for GPS tracking, but you can at least set up a mesh with some repeaters to get better coverage. They're very low-power, but penetration into the trees might be an issue; it's mainly just a bit of fun. It might also give you some good insight on planning a cellular grid without having to commit quite so much money upfront, but I'm guessing you've actually already started that project.

it's not "electro-shock" it's more like a TENS unit, try it on yourself first. Start slow and maybe on a leash, probably best not to start it on a correction. You can use it for the come too. Start low so he doesn't get startled or scared and creates a bad association with the collar and/or your. That's a great collar.

I saw another commenter mentioned using a better antenna, thats one step in the right direction. Another thing to consider would be altitude, like you mentioned when you scouted out a cell tower location. Hey given the remoteness you mentioned, and you almost went A over T already, and as you mentioned hunters (it shouldnt but accidents can happen), i'd suggest you look at getting a leg bag you can strap on any time you go out with a emergency torniquet , bandages and the likes. It doesnt need to be big or get in the way ( can carry a bigger kit in the 4x4), enough to stop any bleeding till someone finds you ... and put it on everytime you leave the house.

@ElectricRanchCO13 күн бұрын
This is a really good tip. The vibration does nothing for him now, but I’ll try preceding the e-stim with it and see if I can condition him. To be honest, I can’t remember the last time I even used the e-stim. It’s been something I’ve used very very sparingly, partially because it’s been SO effective.
@dacharyzoo13 күн бұрын
@@ElectricRanchCO yeah you introduced it later in life. For younger dogs that need more training it's a more useful association. I introduce e-collars as soon as they've learned some basic obedience. After they know *what* to do the collar teaches them compliance isn't optional. It also drastically increases the safety for off leash dogs.

I'm not sure what your plans are for a DIY cell tower, specifically for if/how you will connect it to the normal cell network (sat phone?), but another option might be a solar powered GMRS (radio) repeater. GMRS uses the same frequencies as, and is compatible with, normal walkie talkies. But only GMRS radios can use repeaters. The gear can be pretty cheap, but the only catch is you need a license that is $35 for 10 years and it covers your whole family (parents, siblings, etc.). I'm not sure if one license would cover other people living on the ranch, but realistically if you are as far out as it looks nobody is going to care.
