A short video about my latest acquisition, a vintage Omega Seamaster. A lovely watch, but perhaps I should have done more research and held off a little. Tell me what you think of this watch. Would you keep it, or are the problems a deal breaker?
I got some advice from someone on Instagram, someone who is more of an expert than me, and they confirmed my suspicions.
Find their Instagram using this link / omega_enthusiast
They also have a shop www.omegaenthu...

The obvious thing that strikes me immediately is that the text has been printed back after they cleaned the dial as you mentioned. That is certain. That being said, it's not that awful, they did a pretty good job i think. The vintage charm is present, the movement is so beautiful and most of all things, this watch looks perfect on you (we have the same size of wrist i know). If you paid a little for this it's totally worth it ! Do not sell it ! keep it ! That definitely suits you. And it's an Omega after all ! Cheers bro, nice video.

i too follow omega enthusiast here and on IG, its and absolute world of knowledge regarding these vintage Omega, there are so many combinations they did back then with case numbers, dials, colors, styles that its almost impossible to say if that dial belongs to that case number/cal...only a very knowledgeable person would be able to say that, i think...still its a beautiful watch, its a keeper!

@@TimeandTalk Dude I've bought about 5 swiss movement time pieces from ebay including Swiss Emporer, Longines & now an Omega too and more than happy!! The fact they're 60 years old plus, look amazing and keep time, makes me feel like I'm wearing the past in the present. I believe you get a whole lot more from the classics, couple scrat here and there I can deal with from a watch from the 1960's that's giving you time in 2020. Enjoy fella

I'm also a big fan of vintage Omega's from that period and your watch is lovely. I am a bit of a purist and I don't pull the trigger on a watch until I'm satisfied it's all original. If that means waiting for the right piece or saving up some more then so be it because ultimately the issues of non original parts or poor restoration will effect it's price. I have just bought a 1972 Omega Geneve 565 cal. One owner from new, never been through a dealer, all original including Omega hesalite crystal and movement looks brand new. But I have looked at hundreds of examples and waited for a good one to appear because there is always one out there waiting. It's all about the chase. Regards

I’ve seldom got a seamaster from 1961, the seamaster text looks exactly the same as mine and I was also concerned about this and the fact there is no Swiss made at the Six oclock . I have researched and read that there were some that didn’t have this and before the 1960s it was not uncommon . So I am reassured to see the text is like mine .

That's a great looking watch but I just thought I'd let you know that your watch is missing part of the bezel! If you hold the watch flat and at eye level you will notice that the top half of the case is missing (clearest if you look at the lugs which are too high compared to the top of the case). I saw someone else on Reddit who had the same issue and sent it off to omega to be repaired because there's a risk of the crystal popping off if hit at the wrong angle. I know this video is a year old so you may know this already and may never see this comment but if you don't then it's something to be careful about!

Typo. “ I also have got a Seamaster from 1961 “ not seldom ! The lack of the Swiss Made is rare but not unheard of .there are also several Seamaster texts styles and yours and mine appear to perhaps be less common again than others. The calibre movement in the 1961 watch is a 600 calibre . I own three Seamasters , a basic no date which is the 600 calibre, a Seamaster deVille date in gold 563 , a steel Seamaster de Ville with linen dial 552. Everyone has a different style Seamaster style of writing .

That's a redial and poor job at that. However you can replace that dial with a better restored dial. You just have to hunt around for it. I picked up a 1950 Omega bumper (cal 351) for $100 that looked like it was sitting in dirt for years. It looks promising after I clean it up and service it. You have an Omega movement and that's a win in and of itself.

Hey buddy... with all that’s said I like it... it looks like whatever has been done was a while ago, and over the years especially at this age expect some oddities... I’m guessing you paid around £200 the absolute tops, but in my view £150 would be ok... movement looks lovely and clean with not pitting on the gears. Maybe use this to experiment with and look for a fresher dial with hands? I don’t think you’ve done bad, and it’s not fake... that’s the beauty of vintage watches of this period, they’ve lived through many hands and along the way it has picked up some uniqueness. You sound unsure in your voice, but think it’s now made you look at other OMEGA models wondering if spending more gets closer to your perfect vintage 🙃 Cheers for sharing 👍🏼

Yes that's exactly what I have got from it. I wasn't at the point where I wanted to drop significant cash on a vintage piece, but I am now more open to this provided I can be sure that it is original. This kind of watch is good for me as I have a girl's wrist, so the vintage pieces suit me. Like you said what I think (and hope to be fair) is that the markers have kind of just rubbed off over the years. I have seen examples that this has happened to. Hope you are well.

@@TimeandTalk I have many vintage pieces that have blemishes on the dial and discolouring but it just makes it more genuine to the period... just need to break in that leather and get some ageing on that... I'm guessing it's acrylic and still original? Think you now need to enjoying it for what it is, and maybe you'll refresh it with new hands, or just get them re-lumed. Doing ok down in Buckinghamshire... just odd seeing everything closed down in our village... having a full house makes it not so easy to film because, usually do it during the week when everyone is either at school or work... but will work on my new videos when they're napping in the day LML :-P

That's still a fairly nice watch so if it was a good buy or not imo is more about what you paid. I'd personally pass on it though because the dial and the accuracy of the movement are generally the two things I prioritize most on these kinds of watches. Not having Swiss Made is pretty easy to spot ;) -- There is generally great value in these watches though assuming you get the right one. Many of them are keeping time horribly regardless of which caliber they have so those I don't consider those to be good values. Right now I'm wearing a Geneve that was +- 0 on the grapher, it's a cal 601.

Yes it was sloppy of me not to study the dial more closely before I pulled the trigger. Excitement I guess! My 601 calibre Seamaster also keeps to within +1 second and I was also concerned it didn’t have Swiss Made at the six position . My Seamaster style text is actually the same as the you tubers and I was also concerned about this until I saw his dial . I’ve read that prior to the late 50s and 1960s it wasn’t unheard of for Swiss made to be missing on some dials , it was uncommon but didn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t a true dial . I also thought that if I were someone trying to pass off a watch as an Omega I wouldn’t be so sloppy as to miss out such an obvious thing thst might raise concern in a potential buyer .so the fact it is missing is not so worrying. It’s nice to have it though all the same ..

I have an Omega Geneve Calibre 613 that I purchased new in 1971 for £28. There was no engraving on the back, just the slots around the rim for unscrewing the back. ( Models for the American market I think had plain backs but were only produced with gold plating). I understand that Omega started putting serial numbers inside some time in the 1960s. If the photos show the interior there should be a serial number there that can be checked against Omega's database. Sorry I am not an expert but I hope this helps. Incidentally, the 1971 Geneve is still going strong!

@TimeandTalk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the kind words. I can’t remember exactly, but around £200. At the time I remember that it was possible to get decent examples on eBay for 2-3, but obviously this is a risk. More for non bid examples. To give context, in the UK I saw pretty much the exact same watch (though I think 100% original) in a dealer for £895, so from a dealer that you can trust a little more you will pay significantly more. The 30 is not one of the most expensive, so if you want something more like a constellation you will pay even more. I think it’s a trade off between taking a punt on eBay for cheaper or going for a reputable dealer and paying more. I would be very happy if I got one for less than £500 if it was original but not sure how realistic this is. I think the price of £895 is not unfair a and this watch has made me want more of original piece, and when you consider you will pay at least £3000 for a modern Omega dress watch it seems like a bargain. I might make a video on this but I don’t want to claim to be an expert because I am not.

TheGamesnewsBR I’m by no means an expert in this I’m afraid. From what I can gather, on this watch ‘Seamaster’ looks like it may have been redone on this watch, particularly the s as it doesn’t look quite right, but is of the right style. This watch is manual wind so that is why it doesn’t have automatic ont the dial. In terms of fonts on dials of vintage omegas I would imagine you would find a great deal of variety over the years.

To be fair though, the dial is not perfect but the watch itself and the movement is reasonably accurate, and I have no expertise in terms of repairs. In retrospect I probably wouldn’t have bought this, but I’m glad I did as it reawakened my love for vintage. Thanks for watching.

That is never an £80 watch?? No verified Omega in that condition from 1960 is going for less that £200 at bidding? If i paid £200 for that I'd be grinning like a chesire cat, not only will it hold its value if well kept, if kept for another 20 years in good nic its value will tripple without doubt.

Hey man it's hard getting the perfect watch! And perfect watches cost bank! Be happy with what you have it's still an Omega! Shit my first was my Dad's old Gold Omega when I was like 13 and a childhood friend stolled back then so I no longer have! Anyways I decided to get another Omega and bought a beat up cracked glass the crown barely moved so I couldn't wind it but it had a 565 calibre and 24 jewels so I took it in to get that bD boy fixed it's going to cost me $475 to fix plus the 300 that I payed to buy but you know what you learn from your mistakes I know I did next I'll look for something with a more perfect look and calibre at a cheaper price! That Seamaster is going to cost me more than it is worth lol good luck!

Steve Dan I would say I bothers me a little, but to be honest every one of my watches probably has something not ‘perfect’. I would love a completely original one by would need to pay a premium!

I’ve inherited a similar vintage Omega that needs servicing. Any suggestions out there?

Jon Anderson hi Jon. To be honest I’ve yet to ever send a vintage watch in for service. Any watchmaker or jeweller really would be ok, and this would keep costs down a little. You can send them into omega, but I imagine this would be expensive, so would depend on the model and how much work it would need doing whether it would be worth it. I love vintage Omegas. They are great watches.

Time and Talk Time and Talk it has high sentimental value (my dad bought it when I was born), so I’m pretty willing to pay dearly to restore it. Thank you for your prompt and heartfelt reply.

@@jonabitstream That's lovely that you have your dad's watch. In that case I would just ensure that you gave the watchmaker (or Omega) clear instructions. Restore for some could mean make it look new, for others it may mean keep the original dial, despite any damage or age marks. Ensure that you are clear, as this is such a valuable piece for you.

Time and Talk thanks. Yes, I’m surprised at how emotional even this thread is making me about the watch. Your kind words make it even more special. I hope to restore it to full functionality but won’t need it to look like new (perhaps just a new crystal or a nice polish to the old one). This experience has me contemplating becoming an Omega fanatic.

Whatever you do dont take it to a Timpsons, they wanted more than £100 than Omega themselves quoted me

Whoops which is why I stay away from vintage. Even though I’m ‘vintage’ myself (that watch was made 3 years after I was born!), I still don’t like older watches plus you have all the worries of maintenance too. I inherited a Rolex and an Omega but wear neither as one is 30mm and the other is 35 which still looks like a kids watch on me. 38mm is the smallest in the collection but who knows a may one day wear the Omega at 35 but the 30mm is gifted to my wife. Gimme new or much newer every time!

I see what you mean. However the maintenance would be the same with a new watch, and it would still need to be serviced etc, though maybe not as much. Not too bothered to be honest, as its a lovely watch, but deffo going to buy a more original one next time. The size is perfect for me for dress wear, but I have a girl's wrist! I think I agree with your for casual wear (I don't know what possesses people who pay 50 grand for a vintage Rolex not knowing whether it has been adulterated over the years) but for a dress watch you can't beat a mid century Omega or another Swiss brand.
