Dang, I didn’t realize home 3d printing had come that far. I’ve never done any myself, but occasionally check out different 3d print projects, so I don’t follow it super closely. But the quality on those prints looks amazing. I’ll have to look into resin printing some more. Also, the quality of this whole build (and video) is incredible!
@DragonCMNDR
@DragonCMNDR 28 күн бұрын
FDM printers are getting quite fast and detailed too. Currently, which you go with depends on your use case: Resin (SLA) printers are kings of detail, so if you want to make a lot of detailed figurines, Resin is the way to go, but it's drawback is that resin is brittle and chips/breaks easily and also should not be subjected to sunlight. PLA/Filament (FDM) printers can't compete on level of detail (yet) but have gotten significantly faster, and allow you to use a wider range of materials that can be quite robust, which is great for part-replication and mechanical use. (Sorry if I'm over explaining.) What is nice, is you can have an intro into either machine style for about $250 these days, which is quite affordable! Though of course, this is one of those realms where "you get what you pay for" is still very apt, and the more you spend on a printer, the more perks and easier to use it is. I have one of both types, and while I use my resin printer a lot more... because all my friends want mini-figs of their DND characters, the PLA printer is by-far the more useful one for tinkering and every-day useful items. (Also, it should be noted, is that the filament printers are typically far cheaper per-print to use, over expensive resin.) While I don't have a particular recommendation for any machine, the stuff coming out of, say, Bamboo Labs is quite good for beginners and pros alike, and might be a good place to start your research if you choose to pursue the bug. I don't recommend going down the rabbit hole of KZbin machine reviews though, there lies madness! (Sarcasm, I always recommend one does their homework. But, you just quickly learn that NONE of the manufacturers are perfect, every machine has it's pros and cons, every 3D print youtuber has their bias favorites, and it's still the "Wild West" where all things are concerned... though a slightly more established and civilized Wild West then it was a decade ago. Heh heh.) Huh, I didn't intend to "go off" here, but here we are.

3D printers have not come far, but they are a bit faster, with a bit less calibration. This project shows that, after printing he had days of finishing to make the plastic look nice.

Great project! Tbh the only real flaw I can see is going with a Windows XP-styled skin for a PC with that kind of design - that's a Windows 2000 machine at most, though W98 would be just as fitting. XP era Dells were more often black and much more rounded and stylized in their designs IIRC. Now, this might be on the "going a bit too far" side, but once you're making your own SD card reader PCB, why not make a 3D printed floppy disk microSD card holder that fits into a suitable slot, where the card interfaces with a reader? Or a CD-rom tray you can pull out that holds the card? This would of course require a lot of careful design, plus probably disassembling an SD reader to get the pins without the housing, but it would be incredibly cool. Still, even as it is now, 10/10 project, super well done!

You're right floppy makes more sense but I had to compromise because of the alignment with the add-on PCB and to keep things simple. Otherwise, I would have needed another PCB or extender, or even switched the floppy and CD drive, but that looked a bit weird.

To anyone interested in duplicating this without custom-printing the case, those novelty radios inside fake miniature PC cases are basically the same size as this (I actually have one for this sort of purpose). As an extra benefit, the "floppy slot" on some is perfectly sized to a micro-sd.
@Retrobution
@Retrobution 17 күн бұрын
AMAZING. I have been looking at doing this for many years, but basically just sticking a pi inside of an existing case I have that looks like a miniature pc but it is a novelty storage case for floppy discs. But you have gone total next level and the design of it is spot on. Now just to make some miniature speakers! The only thing I would have changed really is having the micro sd slot be a standard sd slot with a microsd inside an adapter card. Not sure if this messes up anything with the pi system, but the bigger sd slot may be less fiddly. If you did a small kickstarter for these (say 1000 units) just the kit without the pi, you would probably get the funding within a day and then some!
