ELO doesn’t mean who is the GOAT accurately, it’s only showing someone’s performance in specific circumstances in the sport. If you rate ufc fighters using the chess elo system you have to know that elo doesn’t really show who is the best in history, as Bobby Fischer was way above his opposition in chess having only an 2780 elo peak, while without a doubt being considered third best player in history, and then Magnus is the best by elo with 2882 peak, while Kasparov had insane 2851 for his time, when it was even harder to get such rating. So Khabibs elo can’t really effectively rate how great he was, his division was very evenly rated with fighter losing to each other, and not having any single dominant fighter besides him same as with Fischer, it doesn’t mean that Khabibs opposition was weaker, but that the division was more even than now. Another example: English premier league and la liga - Historically many English teams won the league, and every season (besides modern City domination) was a very unpredictable outcome. But La liga had only 3 serious winners, two of which had won it most of the time, so by elo rating we could probably say that Man city or Man United is better than Barca and Real? Only cause of they had “harder opposition”? But then historically we see that Spanish teams actually dominated English teams in the Champions League and UEL… So Elo is a very subjective thing to measure how great someone was
@weignerleigner3037Ай бұрын
Yeah I feel like with elo you have to take into consideration everyone else competing. To get a high elo you need to beat high elo and like with Fischer he was 2790 but I don’t think there was a single other player who was 2700 or above. He would have to basically never lose and play more and more games and even then his rise would be super incremental. With mma I feel like elo doesn’t work there’s too many subjective variables like wear and tear, age, etc. like with Jon jones he beat a lot of great legends but were they still great when he fought them? They were old and towards the end of their careers. Plus the parameters like nowadays guys fight once a year or even two years if they are champs. In chess they wouldn’t let that fly if you are that inactive they might not even rank you.
@mr.nobody2515Ай бұрын
Agree with you, I just wanted to clarify that, cause to think that Belal is greater than Khabib by elo is just ridiculous lol, if he stayed longer I honestly don’t know if anyone could have stopped him. Jones got majority of those points fighting a veterans so it’s also quite subjective

Amazing video! Some suggestions if you want to work on a v2: - Add some depreciation mechanic to adjust for inactivity. - Maybe use age or time in the ufc (or both) as weights for K to adjust for where in their career a fighter is. - Maybe you can also use the amount of fighters in the weightclass at the time of the bout as weights as well for K. To penalize less competitive divisions. - You could also have a sort of buffer calculation for a fighters first fight. Or have two parallel elos one that starts from 1000 and another that starts from the elo of the debutant's first rival. And use an average of both until they converge. Loved the content if any of this sounds interesting and you would like to chat about it, hit me up.

Great video! this video shows the current level of each fighter which is useful for real time ranking but not useful for the GOAT discussion, for example Anderson Silva is arguably the GOAT but it's not reflected in this ranking because this counts all the losses he took after he exited his prime. For the GOAT debate to be settled you need to rank each fighter according to the peak elo rating they reached. Subscribed! you should make another video ranking fighters according to their peak elo rating to see who's the Greatest Of All Time. Cant wait to see it!
@HPloveCraftsCat1352Ай бұрын
The GOAT discussion rightfully includes any given fighters entire career, you can't just cherry pick one aspect the make it more favorable any fighter of choice, it's on Anderson for not retiring when he should have and his resume suffered as a result, while fighters like Khabib, GSP and Mighty Mouse (and soon to be Jon Jones probably) retired as champions and coming of wins. Talking about a fighters peak it's a different discussion, the GOAT debate takes in *ALL* aspects of a fighters career, highs and lows etc...

Cool video! It would be awesome to see a part 2 with updated logic regarding calculating loss streaks and maybe even dominance in fights. I think the current program is more representative of how good fighters are after their last fight, but not taking loss streaks into account because Jon Jones for example(bad example) might be way worse then he was a few years ago but since his ELO was already so high, it'll take a while for his ELO to represent his falloff.

I have 2 recommendations, one was already addressed in other comments and that is using peak ELO, and the other is trying to rerun the list with a variable debut value. I made an ELO a long time ago, and used the matchmaking as a reference point. I assigned the debuting fighter the value of their opponent minus a small amount, as i think its unfair to rank a dude like michael chandler the same as someone coming in off the contender series. You'll get some weird ones like Kris Moutinho getting a crazy bump off o'malley, but I think its worth considering.

I've always thought the UFC should use an elo system for rankings. They could modify their algorithm to take in so many different stats and calculations too - it could be whatever they want it to be. A simple chess elo system is probably too simple, but with enough different metrics to weigh (luckily the UFC already tracks a lot of stats) you could probably make something really effective. It would just be nice for the rankings to not be completely arbitrary.

Let me begin by saying thanks for such an incredible and engaging video. As a long time UFC fan it was fascinating to see where your numbers landed. Great work and what an provocative video idea! I would like to add a few things to your ELO system. It seems to me that there are a few bias results that I feel should be addressed. 1. This seems to be a problem with the ELO system as a whole. If someone has a lot of matches, there is a higher number of chances to get more ELO. Someone with a 70% winrate with enough fights can be higher rated than someone with fewer fights and undefeated or very few loses (1 or 2). I like Bader and he was amazing but it is clear that he is not better than some of these fighters below them. He probably lost to some of the fighters below him. 2. I should also say that we would be more interested in their maximum ELO as that would better reflect the fighter in their prime and not penalize fighters that fought well past their prime. 3. Lastly I would like to see points awarded to fighters that become champion and defend the belt successfully. Make these changes and I think we see a more accurate version of who is the greatest. ***side note, maybe subtract points for fighters that popped for PEDs. like half of all the points for every fight before their most recent suspension. Thanks for reading if you did. You get a sub from me.
