Yes, I always wanted to know if that was true about your brain flipping it back to normal after wearing it a long time, it sounds pretty crazy, especially because if you then take them off, your normal vision will be upside-down for awhile. reminds me of those backwards steering bikes

I'd be willing to bet this is 100% true. I've noticed something similar when wearing snowboarding goggles with red-tint on them, initially everything looks reddish but very shortly after everything looks normal again, however when removing the goggles things (like snow) tend to have a blue tint to them which I can only assume is that your brain did a "white balance" on what you were seeing, and yeah after a while things do go back to normal and snow looks white again.

From what I've seen in videos of other people who tried this, the effect does exist, but it's more complicated than "your brain just flips it back". It's more like learning to see upside down. After two weeks, you can ride a bike, read and write normally, and pretty much forget that you're seeing upside down. If you take the glasses off, it may take several minutes to readjust to seeing normally, with effects similar to when you first take on the glasses.

Crucially, the image will still be upside down (the brain doesn't flip it), but you'll adapt to that. The brain is a strange thing.

Same for me too, I think they both look great but obviously the one done without the goggles is better. Great video Nate and I reckon most of us would like to see you try wearing the goggles to see if you're brain does correct the y axis after time. I bet you'd get a bit of a headache though and sore eyes. As always, a great video mate!!

What if you made periscope goggles that splay out sideways, but facing forwards, so your eyes are effectively further apart - how will this affect your depth perception?

Or angled out slightly to give you a wide field of view like a horse. You probably couldn't see what's directly in front of you but it would be interesting since we're used to our eyes facing straight.

Brilliant video. Loving this content! On the adaptation thing, I understand that when people adjusted to the goggles, they had to go through another period of disorientation and adjustment after they stopped, to return their perception to normal

I've heard the same account. Although it was my understanding that the goggles used in the experiment inverted things the same way that a lens generally does, not a prism or mirror. So the view of the world through the glasses was one that flipped not only up and down, but also flipped left and right.

I used to spend ages looking at oddly shaped reflective surfaces like spoons, water, screens that were turned off etc. To see what shapes and colours and textures did to the image.

I remember seeing a documentary in the early 70's as a kid, in which they put these glasses on a person ( upside down) at first they could hardly walk, or do anything, but after a few days, they completely adapted to seeing the world upside down and could even drive a car, read, and do complex chores, but as soon as they removed the glasses and could see everything "normal" they had to re-adjust again. as they were faced with the same issues as when they put the glasses on.

Uh! that "feels like it's spun rather than mirrored" is a very good observation, I guess brain adapting to this situation takes several steps and "it's just rotated upside down" is one of the easiest ways for it to cope

I can believe the whole brain flipping the image thing. When I was a kid I loved anaglyph 3D, the red-cyan glasses in particular (not as dark). After using them long enough, it would take up to an hour for my vision to return to normal, until then I would get red-cyan ghosting with an overly dark composite. Freaked me out until I calmed down and thought about it. The eye that was behind red got the red ghosting and cyan on the other eye. If I closed one eye however all I seen was monotone red or monotone blue, only the center semi-focused image had any hint of other tones. After noting that I would wait until I knew I was far enough in using them to get that effect then take them off thinking it would still be 3D. It was more surprise to see that the image looked completely normal, like the 3D was turned off but the little icon was still in the corner and lit so I knew it was actually working and it did look 3D through the glasses. I never once questioned the brain's ability to reprogram itself when needed after that.

Oh man, I'd be super-interested in seeing a video where you wear the glasses for a week in an attempt to experience what that Austrian scientist described in his paper all those decades ago. And then spend another week without the glasses, before the vision "flips" back again. That would make a killer video. One thing...do the prism glasses darken the viewing experience noticeably? I ask because in doing photography, I learned that a big chunk of glass absorbs lots of light, requiring lower f-stops and/or longer exposure times when using massive mag lenses. However, acrylic might have different properties to glass. Just a thought.
