YES I did repost this video - it's a long story but my original video somehow got embedded onto a porn site which led to stuff I don't want. Won't get into it but I had to repost to prevent that from happening Thanks for watching everyone and I hope you find the video interesting and encouraging! ❤

Yeah I hear you.... this is what i'm currently working on establishing now. I am building a whole new social media presence for myself that will hopefully allow me to directly work with the agencies and not with a production house so I will be the one with more control and I am getting hired based on my brand and not based on another production house with a "roster" If a brand came to me directly to hire me because they love MY music then I would have much more control (I think)

Well explained, I do this for a living and will add on a bit - it's a competitive industry and there is quite a bit of uncertainty with the clients. Even when an ad agency has an idea for a song or style, it has to go through many departments until it has a final approval. As you mentioned in "revisions" - there are times, especially in the trailer side where the editor team loves it, ad agency approves it, then marketing at the studio wants to go a different direction, etc. That's just the game! But when you land one, it is extremely motivating. I would also mention that it's a very niche market and hard for just "anyone" to tap into - other than library houses, it's definitely a "who you know" industry - cheers

Totally agree with all of this - I just wrote on a commercial where they wanted a very specific sound and then literally a week later after we all sent music in - they went total 180 and I got dropped off the gig - stuff happens. And it is not easy to get into as well that is true

Really nice and informative video for the beginners! A small piece of advice from my side to everyone watching the video (of course in the end it's still up you), but I recommend to avoid any jobs that don't have a kill fee (or as Nathan said, demo fee). There are a lot of companies that will happily use you without paying you a single cent. Please always negotiate the kill fee!

Another great episode, very informative (as always) and realistic. Congrats! You’re asking “Would I do it?”Well .. Had the fortune of having my music for commercials a couple of times on national tv. But weirdest experience: made music for an agency that gave me two briefs (separate directors). One director liked what I demoed for the other and vice versa. None of the 2 made it to the final commercial - Bit frustrating! Not for the faint @ heart 😊 All the Best!

Yeah I wrote for a brief a few months ago where the original thing they wanted was one thing and then another "decision maker" came in and threw it all out the window. That stuff just happens

As an editor of commercials I do feel sorry for composers. So many times I've seen briefs go out to composers one day. Then, while the composer is working on it the agency creatives have changed their mind about what they want. Definitely get a demo fee!

I am guessing that the Beatles would not have been fans of this business model. 😊 For me, the cash flow and the FDA’s are why I would answer no to your question, Nathan. To begin, in my experience, ad agencies are notoriously slow in paying their invoices. Imagine being a subcontractor of a subcontractor for an ad agency. Ad agencies can invent overnight submission timelines, name drop globally known brands from their client list as bait, but forget the talent’s name 90 days later when they call the accounts payable department to beg for their past due check. Oh, now the talent must sign an FDA and never reveal the client’s name on KZbin while the ad agency can brag about its clients on its web site. What? Plus, competition with 10-20-100 other bidders on the front end is only 10%-5%-1% odds of landing a job: a 90%-95%-99% failure rate. That is a monstrous variance in comparison to the “exclusive full time composers” who told you that they land 20-25% of their submissions. Still, a weak 75%-80% failure rate. Ouch! 5:50 So, let’s say that one is reconciled to the stresses of this industry. I then wonder. If the ad agency’s FDA prohibits the talent from revealing on KZbin the famously known company for which the talent’s music was created, how will the talent ever build a portfolio that would become a powerful tool for future sales and additional work at a higher rate of compensation? Pass. 😊

I'm 29 and I started composing when I was between 10 and 11. I started producing when I was 14. I did get a degree in music composition - but I dont think that is necessary. It's better to learn from someone actually doing what you want to do in more of an intern method than school in my opinioin. My best advice - make as much music as humanly possible and build a social media presence around your music.

B.S. You didn't deliver what is inferred in the title. No $ amount revealed. No confidentiality agreement would prevent you from disclosing how much you earned(as long as you didn't identify the company or music piece. You earned one DISLIKE for fraudulent advertising.

You know I am actually doing my best to play it safe so I can keep doing this work - if there were to even been a hint that would make one of my clients think I'm talking about them it could actually harm that relationship. Maybe assuming the worst that I'm somehow being fraudulent is not that great... I DID however give a very realistic range of payment which is actually more important that a singular number of which I got paid
