So I say this because this is probably bothering a couple of people that know their geography correctly. A colony is an occupied area of a kingdom or republic that is outside of the main sphere of influence of said kingdom. an example is grade Britain occupying India, India isn’t anywhere close to Britain, therefore making it a colony. If the occupied peaceful land is connected to the main kingdom, it is a province so if an occupied area by a kingdom is not connected to the kingdom By territorial link, it is a colony and if it is connected to the main kingdom by territorial link and it is a province. So can you please start using it correctly? It’ll probably show that you know more what you’re doing and it’ll make it look smarter.

A colony is just either a settlement (the original meaning) or a land outside the State generally from other culture that is being dominated by it. An example of a colony inside the main sphere of influence of a Kingdom is Ireland, it was colonized while being right next to England and Scotland (its colonizers in both aspects). Arguably you could also extend to definition of colony to include things inside the de jure State like post 1801 Ireland and russian central asia.
