If I’m being honest, this does prove that if you made the outer wedding dress part out of flash paper and the inner mockingjay dress out of something flame resistant, it could work. But it would be really tricky to make it safe and very much one-use.
@bridoesthings11 ай бұрын
Technically yes, but it's tissue paper and it's extremely fragile so it would be impossible to sew with, also with the amount of ruffles and volume of the wedding dress there would be no way to make it actually safe for her

Beautiful dress! As a fireperformer, I think all your safety measures were needed and you did a good job at thinking about them. I know experienced colleagues who had severe burns (one died). Wearable fire Props have proven to be the most dangerous, compared to Poi, Staff, Hoop etc. I actually love option 1, as it is safe and more reliable in performance and looks cool :) So maybe you wanna try it another time? I would love to see it! For everyone checking into this: Ground rule for all fire spinners is not to use plastic fabrics for the costume, as it can melt into your skin, and that is a nasty burn. Use cotton or wool or linnen :) Always keep a wet blanket and bucket of clean water nearby and don't point a CO2 extingusher at a person. Hope this helps!

It’s kinda similar to „Sama“ Persian dance

God I remember when that event happened, with the weighted skirt. Absolutely devastating as a fire performer - we all feel it when one of our own is injured or dies. Thanks for taking the time to talk about this - as an experienced fire performer, I concur with your assessments and advice here.
@rydiavalentine10 ай бұрын
I also think option 1 is the best and also looks more like the one in the movie. Since it's said in the movie itself, that the fire is not real, it's just an illusion.

I would look into skin-safe protective fire gell, it's used in practical effects and allows a fire to be burned very close to the body (ie. clothes) without hurting the person.

Holy cow, amazing job on this!! As a chemist on the spill and first aid teams at my work, i'm glad you took safety so seriously! I'd be interested to see how it'd look if the "fuse" string was at the hem of the dress, rather than the top of that section, so that the fire can travel up the strings, rather than down

You could do the bottom of the skirt in large organza panels like in the original dress, then have an underskirt made of fiber optic fabric. When you spin, the organza panels will fly up, revealing bits of light from the fiber optic underskirt. It‘s not a dress on fire, but it‘s far safer and gives a longer-lasting effect than the flash paper.
@pinknblackproductions11 ай бұрын
As an Australian, fire safety is drilled into us from a young age so thumbs up for all your precautions, the Mythbusters would approve
@zogannstorm604411 ай бұрын
That was pretty cool! I suggest that you create a net of the flash string to attach to the dress. Make the lines drape diagonally to get the fire to move around the skirt more. Attach bits of flash paper and flash fluff all over the net. Also, you could make little paper roses out of the flash paper.... If you don't try this, I might have to and I don't have your figure. It would look like a giant tomato got lit on fire! Flame-roast tomato girl doesn't have quite the same ring to it as Girl on Fire!

here for the basic safety measures! super cool project, glad you put the thought into it necessary to avoid getting hurt. im sure you can totally get a better burn if you try it again and maybe let the flash string dry out more, if that was the issue

Maybe some people won't notice it, but I absolutely loved the way you sewed down the tops of those pleats, I think it really, really brings a unique and beautiful touch to the well established 'formal gown' formula. As someone who's done some amount of practical clothing alterations and *a bit* of cosplay and is interested in designing my own 1930's based formal gown (just in case), those transitions between skirt and flounce etc. looking elongated and fluid still and not just blocked off is something I've been looking at a lot - and those pleats being sewn down like petals/stairs really did it for me 😁🥰 Thanks for yet another super creatively inspiring video, Shay!

GIRL, this is my first video that ive seen of yours and this was AMAZING. also you did NOT go overkill with safety at ALL, my house burnt down last year in july so lemme tell you from experience, u do not want that happening! good job with this dress and for taking proper safety precautions ^^
@SandraOrtmann197611 ай бұрын
That was sooo cool. It looks as if both the combination and placement of the fire string and fire paper is crucial. Before you do the wedding dress, you should do more experiments with that. Maybe also do more cross connections to guide the fire. Regarding the flame retardant: absolutely mandatory IMO. The problem with the wedding dress: this one actually would have to burn away, so a real one-shot dress. Or maybe use the magic of editing and make it a tear-off dress? As always, this was such a joy to watch. And kudos to your parents, they were such a fantastic support to this, honestly, slightly insane project.

Like others have said, wool is naturally fire retardant, and if you coated that in the spray it would be even more so. Maybe an underdress of wool, then you could maybe put patches of the flash cotton in it, and make a sort of over skirt of the flash paper?? It's a great video that can give so many ideas and inspiration for future projects!!
