This started with an English musician, Bob Geldof, who was watching the news and kept seeing horrible stories about the famine in Ethiopia. He gathered up every singer, band, musician, and technician he could, and that ended up being Band Aid. They released "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in 1984. It raised quite a bit of money for famine relief. This was America's answer to that. It raised a good amount of money, as well. This culminated in Live Aid, a concert in both London and Philadelphia. Everyone who was anyone in pop music in the summer of 1985 performed that day. Phil Collins performed in London, then hopped on the Concorde, and performed in Philadelphia. Bands like Queen, U2, and Led Zeppelin were on those stages. It was broadcast worldwide, and it raised even more money. It was that rare time when the whole world said we need to do something. So, we did. I am thrilled you like the song so much. Play it for your children one day.

Good description of the background to this song (though Bob Geldof, now Sir Bob, is an Irish musician). Being from the UK I was very familiar with the UK's song for Africa you mention, Do They Know It's Christmas, which I've always liked - but in my opinion this US version was a much better and stronger song.

Thank you Chris for the history lesson, I think artists today, and mainly the young people should know that you can make a difference, and if you are a celebrity, using that platform to bring awareness on what is going on in the world. Artists back then were very proactive. I am American, and I love "Do they know it's Christmas!" I remember humming in on my way to school in the early 80's.

Michael Jackson put this together during the late 80s. To raise money for the famine from thoughs affected by the war in Eithiopia. The money raised end up helping several African countries out.. I think was $176 million USD that was equivalent to around $500. Million in today's money value

1985, in response to the famine in East Africa, especially Ethiopia. It always makes me sad to see MJ here, looking like a good looking young man. By '88, his looks changed drastically, & it was just sad. ------------So many great names here ------------so many. Saw this on MTV, & I was in tears. ----------------MJL, 76 y/o
