This is one of the lost blogs, shot about 2 years ago and now is finally making it to air. Here I share some of my journey making and shooting my homemade hasselblad XPAN, the people that help make this possible @louisrzurn, here www.louisrzurn... is his blog tutorial with all the steps to how you can convert a hasselblad 500cm into a panorama image talking machine!
I also share some on my failures with this set up, a photowalk with @Pushing Film and some more images I have taken with this awesome set up.

So great to see how you got on with the back. Definitely an easy system to double exposures on. I’ll have to try out your winding technique. So great that you’re able to get that many exposures on a roll. Well worth it though for that awesome cinematic XPan ratio.

Louis R. Zurn it only took me two year to share it! 😂 Thank you so much for taking the time, guiding me and putting together that very in-depth blog post, this is definitely an affordable way to get that xpan kick and very easy to use, you are the master!

I hope my XPan will still work for many many years (I was lucky enough to buy one several years ago when the prices were not crazy as today), but if one day it will stop working, I also need to try something like this. Interesting channel, subscribed!

@@VivaLaFilm I started with the Epoca 135 and now I use the Nikon F3 as well. Not frequently though, because I'm still looking for a DE-3 prism for the F3 as I struggle with the DE-2. By the way, as a matter of curiosity, did you manage to fix your Epoca?

I just recently bought off EBay the official Hasselblad 30x60 mask located between the body and film back. Works well. PS Used the Hasselblad mask to outline a paper mask placed on top the viewfinder screen.
@analogbug16
@analogbug16 4 жыл бұрын
The main downside with that mask is that the back still advances full frames. Even if you have an A16 back you're cutting your potential frame count down quite a bit.
@VivaLaFilm

How many images you get in a 120mm roll? ... I’ll definitely look into it
@flipflopsLF
@flipflopsLF 4 жыл бұрын
Viva La Film Depends but minimum 12 on the A12 back with the mask horizontally. If I rotate the bask to vertical one could get 24 if you can’t half-advance. Plus looking into the rotated prism is a pain. So I will use the mask from 1to 12 times in the roll dependent on what I want to compose. instagram.com/p/B_lQ0yJnHN9/?igshid=b5nbn2mej860
@analogbug16
@analogbug16 4 жыл бұрын
@@flipflopsLF how would you get 24 vertically, doesn't it shoot in the middle of the frame?
@analogbug16
@analogbug16 4 жыл бұрын
@@flipflopsLF I think I get what you mean, you hold the back on vertically. Certainly one odd way of doing it, but as you say you can't half advance with an A12 back.

I have both Hasselblad 203FE and the X-Pan, but still think this is a great idea. The resulting panoramic format (56x21 mm) is not as large as the X-Pan’s (65x24 mm), giving essentially a 1.14 crop factor, but there are some big benefits to be had: 1. A lot cheaper 2. A wider variety of lenses that are faster (including some f/2) and generally cheaper. Unfortunately, with the 1.14 crop factor there is no rectilinear lens equivalent of the X-Pan 30 mm, which I guess just goes to show how special that lens is. A big advantage of the X-Pan is its compact size & mobility, which no other interchangeable lens medium format camera really matches.

Probably not since as far as I'm aware there is no way to manually wind the film any distance but what it's designed for. The Hasselblad is fairly unique in this regard that you can disconnect the film advance from the shutter cocking mechanism.

Do you think there is any way to do this with a Mamiya c220?
@analogbug16
@analogbug16 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not that familiar with the c220 but is the film advance a separate action from cocking the shutter?. If it is, I think it could be possible. The trick would be finding out how far to advance the film to maximize exposures.
@VivaLaFilm
@VivaLaFilm 4 жыл бұрын
Probably not as the cocking mechanism in that C220 camera is the same as and linked to the mirror lockup, unlike the Hasselblad that has a film back that is separate and detachable mechanisms just for the film winding

@r.thirtyfivemm 4 жыл бұрын

@analogbug16
@analogbug16 4 жыл бұрын
@@r.thirtyfivemm Then it might be possible, the trick is knowing how far to advance between frames. Could certainly try it though. The parts I designed (available on my site listed in the description) are designed for the hasselblad but I would think they could fit in the gate of a C220 with a little modification.

acid grain Depends on how you define panorama? I go by an image that is at least 2 times wider than it is tall this fits that description. These are not cropped after the fact, this is the format the film back takes.
@sophrapsune
@sophrapsune 3 жыл бұрын
@@violet_world9385 That’s all that the X-Pan does, though it’s format is wider (65 mm) than than V series (56 mm). What makes it “panoramic” is the final aspect ratio.
