UPDATE 4/28/2021: So in the video I talk about how I couldn't get the cones to stay lit. Well, it turns out I just made some of them too big! The smaller ones seem to be burning just fine 🔥
I was inspired to make my own incense and was actually very surprised that I didn't mess it up. I love the way this incense smells and I will definitely be making more like it! Now I have so many ideas for different blends and scents. I can't wait to try them all out!

On your cones, make sure you hallow out the centers, you can do this by running a knitting needle in the bottom of the cones to the tip.

You can also measure out 1/8 tsp, of your incense dough and roll it into sticks between your palms. I like to form the stick as much as I can with my fingers and place it across my palm, then continue rolling between my palms for the last half inch or so of length. I aim for a length that is the width of my palm from index finger across to the pinky finger side. Or you can scoop your dough with 1/4 tsp and form it into cones. If you have ever seen Shoyeido's incense, or bought them, I try to aim for the size of the thicker, shorter sticks like their River Path.

Try giving your cones a week or so to dry, and flip them over each day so that they dry evenly. I usually wait for my cones to be dry enough that I can touch them easily and not distort their shape, about 6 hours after making them. At this point I turn them onto their side so the bottoms can dry. I just leave them that way until the next day. Then I will roll them to one side or another to make sure they dry evenly.

I never feel right using a whole charcoal brick because I never need the whole thing, but breaking it up has been wonky for using incense. Making my own has been a dream and when I stumbled over makko powder as an additive I was so excited. I am going to try it myself soon and hope for the best.

You might wish to try Japanese bamboo charcoal; it does not contain sodium or potassium nitrate, but lights quite well in a candle flame (you will need to use tongs to hold it). You can light one end and give it a few minutes in the incense burner to expand the burning area. It comes in two sizes (that I have found), a square about 1"x1" & a small rectangle about 1/2"x 1".

Yes! They actually make a little tool to make backflow cones. That's up next on my list of things to do because I have a gorgeous backflow burner that I want to use all the time. Brooklynn, who I was inspired by, adds activated charcoal to theirs to help it burn but I didn't have any issues with mine. I think it could just be preference or the type of incense they make.

Hey girl! Did you put holes in your cones? Someone told me to do so that’s what I’ve done since the beginning and I feel like they don’t stay lit. They’re small but don’t burn well. Maybe I shouldn’t put the holes???
@RoundtheCauldron

Hey! I actually didn't put holes in them! I think they may have just been not dry all the way. They were pretty thick. If I make cones again, I will let them dry for several days before even trying to light them.

I'm confused I buy white sage all the time 🤷🏻‍♀️ I believe it's made in Mexico where mine comes from probably could fine it on Amazon if you couldn't find it?👍🏻
@RoundtheCauldron
@RoundtheCauldron 2 жыл бұрын
White sage is a plant that is native to parts of California and Mexico. I don't have an issue finding white sage. The issue is that the Indigenous People of the Americas have asked people to choose another herb to burn for cleansing rituals. White Sage is one of four sacred medicines to some indigenous tribes. The commercialization of white sage, over harvesting, and the fact that Indigenous People were legally forbidden from practicing their beliefs in the US until the 70s makes it a matter of respect over anything else. I choose not to use white sage out of respect for those Indigenous People who were oppressed and couldn't use it while corporations and others profited from their sacred medicine and culture.

Hi. I didn't use Makko powder I used Xanthan Gum and my cones didn't light up. I added charcoal powder to my mix, I don't know if that was the reason why. I was wondering if maybe you had some information regarding that. Thank you!
@RoundtheCauldron
@RoundtheCauldron 2 жыл бұрын
The makko powder is necessary to make incense, in my experience. Even with charcoal powder, the makko powder is what lights and allows it to burn. You've got to have that for it to work. Xanthum gum is just a thickening agent which isn't the purpose of the makko powder.
