Very nice! These two snacks are very similar to a couple of our Indian snacks, one of which you made in another video of yours - vada pav. Great work recreating these two Sicilian snacks. Please post a video of the vegan burger buns.

Hi! We have a similar dish to the Panelle in Western India, called Patvadi (loosely translates to 'pan squares' in Marathi). It is prepared almost the same way, except instead of mint we usually add ginger-garlic paste, but every household has their own version. It can be fried or stewed, but everyone obviously loves the fried ones the most, haha. It's wonderful how much cultures so far away from each other always share something in food - and the love of food, of course!

I love what you are doing- exploring traditional vegan culture by digging back into our ancient cultures of the world before the widespread animal agriculture of nonstop meat and dairy, and seeing what the world’s ancestors ate on traditional plant based diets. This is much needed in the vegan community. Then we start to see how our native cultures are so similar in the kinds of plant based foods and humble, healthier lifestyles people used to lead. I didn’t know that the plant based foods in India were similar to that in Italy, but it doesn’t surprise me. Your presentation and personality are fantastic. Keep going, I look forward to your content!

I finally made these tonight. Made vegan buns and fried up the Panelle & Cazzilli and whipped up some of your Gremolata. Just WOW!! I took 3 fritters brushed it with oil and tried it out in the air fryer just to experiment and it turned out well. I forgot to put aside some fresh mint for the Gremolata so I used half the measurement of the mint and used dry mint that we dried from last summer. Turned out so good! Thanks Julius! 😋 Btw…I love your energy! ((❤))

They look awesome. Unfortunately I have Hashimotos and I really shouldn't have oil in my diet or eat potatoes although I, very occasionally, do. Can they go in the oven instead with a light brushing with olive oil?
@BakingHermann
@BakingHermann Жыл бұрын
Haven't tried that yet, but my concern is that they most likely won't hold together very well. So it'll be more like spreading roasted mashed potatoes onto the bun, not a bad thing maybe haha ☺

Try farinata di ceci instead! It's a really similar recipe from Liguria (northern Italy) and it's equally as good in a sandwich. It's basically panelle but it skips the step of cooking the mixture on the stove, the batter goes directly in the oven. Hope it helps!

Does cooking potatoes with skin on help retain some nutrients even if you peel them afterwards?
@BakingHermann

It allows less water to enter the potatoes. And yes, less nutrients leak into the water.

Being a vegetarian, i would love to try this for my german husband... When i tried mint in Germany, it gives a very menthol minty strong flavour..., unlike the indian mint... Is there any specific name or just normal usual mint we get in the supermarket ...

To be 100% accurate guys people in Sicily will usually place either panelle or cazzilli inside a panino with like sausages and other stuff, so yeah they themselves are vegan but in the vast majority of cases both are included in a meat based panini. Also, usually if you are in a group of friends and you don't feel like sitting in a bar waiting for an aperitif, you can order a tray of mixed fried goodies and you'll usually get tons of fries, fried eggplants, panelle, cazzilli, mozzarella sticks, and potato crisps and all the sauces you need usually at about a decent price.

I come from Palermo and what you say is not true. Traditionally these "friggitoria" sell only these 2 items. Sometimes they sell also with fried aubergine which you could put together with panelle e cazzilli, or even sell deep fried veggy fritters. Sometimes you might find them in other shops which sell also "Pani ca meusa" which is the antithesis of vegan food as it is lungs and spleen boiled and then fried in animal fat, together with other meat food like "stigghiola" etc.
