Hello Friends! And Welcome to the last video in my current witchy speed-run series! In this video, I am making up the Red Threaded1780's front lacing stays, and wowzers, is this a comfortable and pretty simple pattern! I made these to go under the gothic black Chemise a la Reine and black linen petticoat that I made earlier in this series, and I cannot wait to wear them! The speed run idea in general was really great and forced me to push through pretty hard and get an entire outfit done in just a few weeks, so I will for sure be incorporating this more in the future. For now, I hope you enjoy this deep dive into some 18th century undergarment fun!

One way to eliminate the lump of thread on the back is to hold both threads firmly in hand when you start the seam. I never knew that modern machines have this problem. I’ve only sewn on vintage machines, and assumed it was only a thing with older machines. Your stays are magnificent. I’m starting the mock up for my Edwardian corset next, so I am gleaning knowledge from everyone’s projects first.

The problem is that this has an automatic thread cutter so I never see the bobbin thread! It lives under the machine!
@flutterby345
@flutterby345 2 жыл бұрын
@@Costuming_Drama Its taken me getting a new machine to figure out how to stop this without holding the threads. Ive found that the needle needs to have started the next stitch - not much, it just needs to have started the downward movement so that the feed dogs have stoped moving - before you stop sewing. Then when you start the next piece, no lump! Maybe this will help you.

@@Costuming_Drama you could try holding the top thread. The bobbin thread should be really short and not cause that problem with an auto cutter, so maybe it’s your top thread being pulled down?

I sew on 1970's machines. Never have the issue unless my tension is off. Not sure if that will help. I have yet to look at the really old machines. When I have a craft room I plan to get a treadle one. Mainly for looks but also incase electricity goes. ❤️ I'd rather not fully handstitch.

I love the idea of the spray adhesive. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. I learned the spray adhesive trick when I took a quilting class and we used it to sandwich the quilt top, batting and quilt back before quilting the pieces together. It works so well.

It reminds me of a randomly autoplayed KZbin video I saw of a tailor in South Korea -- he used a regular old washable glue stick to tack a layer of chiffon to a backing fabric before running it through the sewing machine and I was just like 🤯🤯🤯😍

@Reneé Neé N - Some spray adhesives can turn paper goods brown over time. (That's why you should never use it to mount fine art.) Beware of use with fabrics. If there is a spray specific to fabrics (I never looked into it), use that and follow the company's instructions to the letter..
@reneestuckyneale1599
@reneestuckyneale1599 2 жыл бұрын
@@MossyMozart I have used both, on art and fabric. I only use as specified for the art/paper spray adhesive. There are temporary and permanent and yes, the adhesive can age so you need to watch where you put it. As for fabric, I have used the spray that would temporarily adhere a quilt sandwich together until I will quilt over it. I have also used small amounts of fabric glue when doing appliqué. But for some reason I had never thought about using the quilt sandwich temporary spray in the construction of stays.

I usually bind the bottom before putting the bones in. It makes the tabs MUCH easier! (So I sew all the pieces, flip, mark the boning channels, sew them, THEN bind the bottom before anything else.

Seamstress I speak to (who did work for 20 years) told me to use stick glue, like school based glue. That way you can line it up as you put it in. Then let it dry before sewing. She hates spray adhesive if it wasn't for specific things XD.

Okay, I am loving watching these stays being made because I am not a seamstress and it fascinates me, BUT I have to step in and agree that ZOFRAN IS A MIRACLE DRUG! lmao When I was preggos with my son, they put me on a couple of nausea meds (really bad nausea throughout the pregnancy) and they literally made me psychotic (YIKES!). Apparently, those meds flip switches in my brain that are related to LDS trips and cause bad mojo in my head. They finally put me on Zofran, which was only approved for cancer patients at the time, and it really saved my life. I could eat for the first time in 4+ months and it was heavenly. So, I that's my story that I had to share. I'm glad you're feeling better, Noelle !

Yes! It’s called Ondansetron where I am, but I keep a pack on me at all times -I’m an emetophobe, but also I’m disabled and vomiting would be extremely painful and land me in bed for weeks. Definitely something to avoid. I’ve also got the lower strength anti nausea meds, but Maxolon takes a lot longer to kick in, so both it is.

I am busy with putting in the lining of a 1860-ish corset by hand. It’s a project for school. It has got 44 plastic whale bones and 6 metal ones 😅 and luckily we were allowed to sew the channels by machine. Your binding is a lot better than mine 😂 but I am learning. At the end of the school year we will be making 1800-ish stays like yours. Looking forward to it 🤩

I am so sorry that you were so ill. Glad you are back on your feet though. So many shots of the pieces kept giving me angel wing vibes and the black and white kept bringing me back to Good Omens. It's so good to see you getting to a point where you are really enjoying your finished items to the point of actually being proud of them. You have made some amazing things since I started watching your channel and it is so great that you are happier now with your end products instead of just "I have a deadline. I am just making it good enough." Even then the things you were making were lovely, but it is nice to see you taking the 29 hours to bind these stays to a point where you are actually proud instead of just satisfied. (I I have spent long portions of the last few months watching your video backlog and I just saw the video where you were super excited about wearing old lady glasses. I also am looking forward to being an old lady. I started to get Grey hairs when I was 24. I now have salt and pepper wings in the front and I love them. To anyone who has told me I should cover them I have said that I have earned every one of them. I am not listening to anything new just now but my baby brother just told me about a podcast that seems up your alley (if you haven't already listened to it. It's called Behind the Bastards and is a history podcast about some of the world's worst folks and how they came to power, etc ( from what my brother said).

I didn't even realise that was a thing, but I agree with the nausea thing. When it is over, it is the best thing ever. I always feel like my life is perfect (even if it isn't) the non-nausea day after a nausea day. It's wierd how big of a deal it has on my mood. Hand sewing takes for ever. Am procastinating on hand finishings on a dress by mending socks. Still by hand, but much faster wins. Started watching She-ra recently and I am so glad I had it recommended to me. And found an audiobook that has come out really recently, and is the first part in a planned book series, which means I have to wait to read the whole story. Which bums me a little. I like reading and watching already finished series as I know the rest is there when I have finished the first one. That means not risking missing that a follow up is coming out because it went a coulpe of years and I forgot (which has happened before).

Your stays look amazing!! Yay for them being done! I’ve been watching Encanto over and over. I just love it. And related to the doorknob at the end… if you look closely, the new one is patterned the same as the doorknob on the door that disappeared. (Everyone has their first initial on their doorknob, and the new one has an M on it.) I’ve been working on my embroidered skirt inspired by Mirabel’s. I did what I jokingly call a tramp stamp on the back that has stars and a scrollwork heart. I’m almost done with a pod of dolphins swimming along the left front near the bottom of it. It’s been super motivating to work on because each hoop’s worth of stitching feels like it’s own project and I’ve been using a 5” hoop, so I’ve been able to get them done in 5ish hours and get that “finished project” happy brain chemicals.

Ohno! I'm glad you're feeling better! I hope that continues! Sending lots of healing energy Thank you for taking care of yourself. I look forward to your vlogs, and the inspiration and motivation you impart. Please don't call yourself stupid. What would you say to any of us who made the same mistake? Be as kind to yourself as you would be to anyone else, please! They look so good! SO good! You *should* be proud of them! I think I need a par of black stays someday, now! I love a slightly bent needle, as well. My sewing needles and sock knitting needles all tend to take a slight curve, lol You could unbind just the tip, back a few inches, cut it down, and then trim the binding to make it fit. It would have a little lump where you'd overlay one end over the other, but you wouldn't have to undo the whole top of the binding. I'd put the "seam" of the binding on the outside edge of the strap. I'm working on an 18th century LARP costume. Did a super short video of the sewing I got done this past week! Chemise and bum pad! My stays I made previously are a little uncomfortable with the bum pad because the back tabs are really long, so I need to make a different set before I continue with the bodice. I also inherited a lot of fabric from a friend who is moving to Alaska, and I have 3 or four new bodices to make for this characher from some of that, lol, as well as enough yardage of a really light and full-bodied (almost polished?) cotton that might be good for a sacque gown, even though the print is not very historically adequate. I'm finally settling down to watch Anne Woth an E, and using it as my lace knitting show. Trying to get a row done every night, but I'm in border chart land, so the tows just keep getting impossibly longer each time! I'm about to start my last chart, though!

I can attest that doing the tabs by machine is not easy, I prebind all my pieces before I sew them together, that is the ONLY way I have found that works for me, Sure the seams at the bottom dont look the best but who cares? It takes practice to bind tabs by machine. But its doable. Good job on these! RedThreaded stays are probably some of the easiest to construct. I highly encourage anyone wanting to see how she does bind the 18th century stays by machine to watch her video. It helped me A LOT!

Awesome Stays Noelle...! You look marvelous in them and I can see that they fit you well. One thing that I do when I have to cut holes for grommets is to iron in a line of that polyester Stitch Witch to seal the pieces of fabric together so it doesn't fray. Love the spray adhesive idea that you came up with. Watched recently "A Discovery of Witches" and was crazy about the 2nd season where they go back in time...OMG...! To prevent the thread nest on the back, you can either pull the bobbin thread to the top before stitching, or you can use a piece of scrap fabric which you sew over between the stitching lines on your garment. Both methods are very common for patchworkers/quilters :)

I've had the pattern for some 1770's stays for over a year. I shall make my shift next week and get on the stay making. So inspired by these videos!!! Sending thought and good wishes for your feline friends.

YAY! SEWSTINE!!! I love the color of your grommet press. These stays are BEAUTIFUL!! I've just been trying to stay motivated -- no, less than motivated. I just want to keep moving, and I'm failing at that. I have fallen into watching KZbin shorts -- AAARGH! You think you've watched a couple of them, and you have just spent 3 hours!!! They're fun, they're entertaining, THEY ARE LITERAL HELL IF YOU ARE TRYING TO GET ANYTHING DONE!!!!

Another way to deal with the curve in boning is the flip which side is ‘up’ so the curves cancel each other out.

Wow…. That corset looks AMAZING… I love the arrangement of stays. I’ve watched several corset-making videos, and I don’t recall seeing any with such intricate positioning of stays. I can’t believe that this is a mock up piece..

Aaah they look great!! 💖💖💖 As usual I'm watching this while working on a cosplay (another completely unlined jacket to add to my collection 😎), thanks for the company~ 💖💖 I was also pm bedridden due to nausea these last few days, but I managed to finally finish off a knit sweater for another cosplay. My plan to finish my 2021 cosplans in the first half of 2022 is coming along pretty well 💪💪💪 And also aaaaa Encanto and AAAAA LUISA 🙏💖💖💖💖 Loved her since the first trailer, so happy to see that so many others love her too! 💖

The stays look fantastic and it great to see yo recovering so well after your urgent care visit. If you plan on doing more fine work with your dremel then I can highly recommend investing in a table/bench clamp vise to hold the pieces your sanding - safer and means that you can switch hands when the buzz feeling gets too overwhelming. Longer clamps can also hold a row of boning. Currently I’m working on my torchon lace piece while rewatching the M*A*S*H series and reading Medieval Clothing and Textiles 15.

Late to comment, because I saved this for a moment when I can sit down and sew while I watch. Love the corset, I think the fit looks really good! Currently I am hand sewing a quilted petticoat (but of the most basic diamond variety), which is honestly coming along faster than I though it would, and I am very excited for how warm its going to be.

Your stays look amazing! The binding is so neat and precise. I am working on a modern pantsuit made with couture techniques. I'm almost finished the wearable mockup of the pants - there was so much hand sewing, but I'm glad I made the effort to practice the techniques and get the fit right.

They came out so freaking beautiful!! I'm in awe! So happy about this video came out now! Had a very hard couple of days and this beautiful stays content cheered me up a lot! Also randomly started sewing a simple summer dress withou a pattern or anything yesterday. Just didn't feel like working on UFOs or go through my fixing pile. Had this pretty summery fabric laying around I bought for three euros at the second hand store and just started making shoulder seams and a neckhole. WIll be my first modern garment that is not baby clothes. Still using a modernised iron age cut though, because I don't want to deal with closures or anything like that Hope your health is fully recovered now!

I know what you mean about the bobbin thread not looking clean on the reverse side. I've quit using my auto thread cutter and now leave thread tails so I can hold them when I start sewing. Like the old days, no more issues.

Your aloud to take time off for yourself especially when your sick. Your health is way more important than your channel! Also don’t worry about the stitches no one but you would ever notice!

Those look AMAZING!! I just found your channel because I was doing a search to see if anyone has done this pattern. I just bought the pattern and fabric and feeling my skills are a touch inadequate 😅. I’m making my first historic costume to get ready for next years revolutionary war reenactment events. Based on your amount of time spent, I may need to shoot for the 2025 season 😂
