This is great! I don't know why I didn't think of using the distance value on the ao node to distort the output, brilliant! I also love the bevel node and the difference node trick. Using lots of bevel nodes can slow down your render but if you bake out the material. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the tutorial, it´s really the best on texturing spaceships. Would be super cool if you would do something similar in the future for a spaceship interior scene, like a hangar, hallway , etc. using the other textures from your texture pack. I would never came up with all those ideas by myself how to use those textures, but in conjunction with your video it´s just phenomenal!

Great tutorial, and you convinced me to buy the texture pack, but this is really the kind of video that could use 4K, mostly because you're showing a lot of text in the nodes, which is not even at sharp 1080p. The screen capture software compresses that, then KZbin recompresses the hell out of that compressed video, so we end with text that many times is hard to read. But great video nonetheless.

Very helpful m8! You make it look so easy. I was wondering if all those panels have their backfaces that are sticking inside the surface deleted or not. What's the general accepted workflow when you intend to sell your models? I've seen a lot of commercial work with non-manifold geometry and it rendered just fine.
@ChristopherFraserVFX
@ChristopherFraserVFX Жыл бұрын
Excellent question! I honestly don't usually make any of the models you see in my videos. But I will ask my talented modeler friends what their processes are, and maybe a video will come out about it soon!

if you dont see the geometry, you dont need to have it there. delete useless backfaces, save polygons and texture space where you can.

Hey, so, dumb question because it's about an unrelated add-on, but: is it possible to set these textures/images up with Fluent Materializer? That's been my main method of quickly putting textures together, and adding these to the mix would be a blessing. I'm buying them either way though lol, thank you for the video!

Could be a number of reasons, are you using Cycles? Eevee doesn't respond the same as cycles does to a lot of things.

That's bizarre! My other thoughts are maybe it's a color management issue, or a problem with the way you're previewing it

Great video dude! Im new to cycles and mostly used eevee before, but i just purchased the textures and tried copying the texture you created to get a hang of it. I noticed you where able to preview the rendered model without the noise cycles usually comes with when previewing the model in rendered view. Any inside on how you did that would be highly appreciated, as its very time consuming to preview texture changes with the added time from the noise clearing/rendering.
@ChristopherFraserVFX
@ChristopherFraserVFX Жыл бұрын
So glad to hear!! Cycles is an incredible engine. As far as your question I don't know immediately what you're referring to, but the main two methods are: 1. Viewport denoising, which you can enable under your sampling settings. I'm able to use OptiX because I have an Nvidia RTX card, but OpenAI denoising is actually better in my opinion (even though it's way slower.) 2. Using Node Wrangler to preview the color pass, that way you can see just the color and it doesn't have to calculate all of the lighting as well as the texturing. Like I mentioned, I also have a nice video card, so part of it might be the speed of my card. Hope this helps. Happy rendering!

@@ChristopherFraserVFX Thanks for the fast reply! I was talking about the render preview you have on the right side in blender. At 14:27 for example you rotate your object in rendered view but there is close to no noise appearing (I actually didnt even notice the noise at all when i wrote the first comment). For me it always takes several seconds to clear up, which makes previewing texture changes a bit tideous. Denoising and Optix as a render device where both indeed not enabled yet and where probably what i was looking for, thanks! Though im weirdly enough running into some issues with Optix as a render device, even though i got an RTX 2080 Super. It takes around 2 minutes to activate each time i change from solid view to rendered view. In that time i only see the models as grey without any contrast at all. It also takes around 1 minute for each frame when rendering the final animation, before i start to see anything at all, which has me thinking there might be a problem with Optix itself... (Do you have any idea on why it takes so long?) I use Cuda as rendering device for now and Optix only for denoising and i also watched several videos on youtube on how to configure cycles settings for the fastest render times. Its definetely a big upgrade to the blender preset i used before, but its still nowhere as smooth as in your video... If you have any pointers on what additional setting changes those videos might have left out be, or any ideas on why my Optix isnt working as intended id really appreciate it :)
@ChristopherFraserVFX
@ChristopherFraserVFX Жыл бұрын
Well definitely change your rendering device in settings to OptiX, that'll take advantage of the speed of your card. I have a 2070 Super, so you should have no problem passing me in speed. Do you also have your rendering device set to GPU in the render panel to the right? It may not come that way by default (I found that out the hard way a while ago.) At that specific timecode it looks like there's no roughness, and only like one very sharp light source, which just makes computation super easy for Cycles, so rendering is naturally way faster! Kinda like how the default cube renders so fast just cause the entire scene is so simple.
@ChristopherFraserVFX
@ChristopherFraserVFX Жыл бұрын
I really don't know what's causing all those issues though, maybe make sure all your drivers are up to date? I guess if OptiX really is causing that many problems on your machine then don't use it... For now. That's very out of the ordinary though, it was smooth sailing for me so i dunno😅
@Brosion99
@Brosion99 Жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherFraserVFX Thanks for the replies! Yea i selected gpu compute in the renter tab as well and also only got one light source in my scene, so all in all pretty similar to the scene in the video. Ill just try around a bit more before giving up on OptiX, tried updating nvidia studio drivers and installing optix directly from nvidia as well, but that didnt fix it either :/ There are some posts online from people with similar issues, but it seems to be able to be caused by a variety of different problems and i havent found the solution for my system yet😅 Thanks for your replies though, its a bit reassuring that theres probably nothing obvious that ive missed. Either way i rendered the first few pics of the spaceship and it looks superb with your texture pack, so thanks again for that and the tutorial! Cheers :)

like a submarine with little wings and jet engines. Your settings are too finessed, imo. You can't see those in full screen with the whole ship showing. Especially that bevel. Nice examples of how to do it but you should have cranked up that bevel more and some of the faint details, imo. but very nice vid.

Although it's a good texturing tutorial I have one question: Why do space ships get dirty in space? There is nothing but vacuum. Why is there rust on the space ship? Is it made of iron? And where does the oxygen come from? Why liquids are dripping down the surface when there's no gravity?
@ChristopherFraserVFX
@ChristopherFraserVFX Жыл бұрын
Depends on your story, or your aesthetic. Ships don't stay in space forever! If it's a freighter, it's probably been on plenty of planets, but it really depends on how you want your ship to look. I'm only presenting the ideas :)
@fittersitter

@@ChristopherFraserVFX Ok, but the only real space ship i know is the ISS. It doensn't land on the planet that often because it needed dozens of heavy rockets to be lifted in parts only 400 miles above earth. I wonder how much energy is needed to lift your feighter into outer space regulary. Ok I know it's only sci-fi. Nevertheless i prefer at least a little realism.
