Honestly, this feels like something that could fit *right* in in the Star Wars universe as a combat droid. After all, both Star Wars and the MCU have a kind of "technopunk" theme to them, and this hits that aspect in a very strong way.

Other people might not notice this, but the Galactic Empire did not exist at the same time as bb8. Bb8 was in the sequel trilogy, when the Galactic Empire was from the Original Trilogy. But it’s still awsome!
