This is great, your editing style has improved and makes it very easy to follow. Huge potential to be the go to for learning moves. Doing entries to the move, responses, etc was fantastic. Way more information than most instructors on KZbin. So all in all 11/10. I hope you make more of these, an fingers crossed a new regular guillotine instructional for sure.

This video is great, I've been doing ankle locks from single-leg x for a year now and tend to go belly down when they clear my foot or rotate. But I'm definitely going to introduce the de la riva more as well. I'm glad to see ankle guillotines getting the love they deserve!!

You're already a black belt and a master of the guillotine, so it's hella awesome to see you continue to work and expand on your game instead of just sticking with what you already know. Good stuff Tyler and I'm loving all your content =D Keep it up

Excellent instructional. We've been working on heel hooks at my school but I've been trying to turn them into ankle locks for competition. My biggest tripping point so far is the entry to the entry, if you will. If I find myself lying below an adult man standing, straddling my chest, you can bet I'm locking up and X and and going for tendons but I don't yet understand how I would have gotten there in teh first place.

I think especially for your size, wrestling up, or wrestling from the feet into it, will be the best answer. Otherwise I find that half guard -> these guards work the best. You can frame against them when they make a little space then start to go towards rdlr

Tyler, excellent video! One thing, and forgive me if this sounds like "sharpshooting" but at 2:11 I think you say most people turn their knee in so they don't have to worry about the heelhook - I believe you may have mis-spoken there, since turning the knee in, turns the heel out in a very dangerous heelhook position. Regardless, very helpful video, thank you.

Cool instructional. Interesting take down and finishing position and I haven't seen this setup before for the foot lock, i.e. with the x-guard type hook and opening the knee. You refer to it as a De La Riva Hook, though is it a De la Riva hook when the hooking leg is on the inside (as with x guard), not on the outside of the opponents leg like a standard De La Riva hook. Anyway regardless of the semantics it certainly looks effective and I'll be trying it out on the mats next opportunity.

I really like coming up to a calf slicer after inverting on a straight ankle lock. Also, I've lost a match from trying an ankle lock once. Dude just wouldn't tap even after feeling it pop twice. Although, he pulled out of the gi division later on that day....... Just a fair warning that some people just will not tap to a straight ankle lock.

You called it De La Riva (wrapping the leg from the outside), but aren't you using K-guard instead (inside)? I've also heard people call the whole position butterfly ashi. Either way great video!

As long as I can place my foot in the right spot, especially the one on their hip, I should be able to extend them more than they can pull me in (leg Vs arm strength)
