I did a double take when I saw this as a video on UTube! Years ago my mother was quite the accomplished seamstress who was self taught. She made a number of pieces of her wardrobe. She actually made this dress for herself back then. To give you some perspective, I believe that was in the 50’s. I am now 75!

At 72 , I too have wonderful memories of my mother's beautiful sewing ! While we did not need to make our clothing to save money , we did it to be unique , creative & have our own special looks . From formals to swimwear , we loved choosing patterns & fabrics ! I showed horses & just like my dresses , you didn't want to have the same outfit as anyone else . Sewing is a lifelong skill & enjoy learning more . 💗

I think you did a fine job, and yes with some torso and shoulder adjustments it will fit you nicely. The extra waist buttons will make it more stable, this dress was designed for someone with a 1950s wasp waist, don't forget, lol! I am glad you mentioned that it looks best with a petticoat. I watch channels where people express disappointment in how these vintage garments look when sewn up, and complain that they are limp or frumpy, etc...I think modern people are missing something here. Namely, to get a true vintage look you need correct undergarments to act as a foundation. My grandmother was always going on about proper "foundational layers" such as bras, slips and girdles. It's hard for us to believe now, but even slender women wore girdles back then, to nip in the waist and create the desired 1950s silhouette. Without these ingredients the garment will not wear as expected. It was also much more common back then to starch and iron cotton fabric, which gave it more body. I enjoyed watching you create your own version of the Walk Away Dress.

@@susanrussell8195I totally agree! I found the first comment honest and wholesome. She only agreed with the shoulder comment, which in my opinion was completely honest and needed. We can all agree the dress looks nice on her but, would look lovely more tailored to her shoulders!

Last time I was at JoAnn Fabric was right before a season change (when they release new fabrics and new patterns). They usually have fully stocked drawers of patterns, but it was slim pickins right before the spring/summer patterns were released. Side note: I really was disappointed in the new pattern releases this season, they’re all so mid. Even Vogue was a letdown, and I usually like their pattern designs and fit, even if it’s not a design I’d wear.

Lovely dress - well done...... To your point about petticoats : underskirts, slips, petticoats, whatever you want to call them will **almost always** improve the way your dress/skirt hangs/falls. Especially those made in a "silkier" fabric, such as polyester/nylon/silk. (Cotton slips are lovely, but can create surface friction between the slip and your dress/skirt, thus impeding the flow/hang of your garment). xxx💖💖💖

Hey, wow, I actually made that dress 13 years ago when I first started sewing! It was probably one of my most-looked-forward-to patterns, because my whole reason for wanting to learn to sew was to make retro dresses. 😍 On mine I did an aqua fabric with tiny brown dots for the front and a solid dark brown for the wrap-around. I felt soooo legit whenever I wore it (with a crinoline underneath) that it felt more like a costume, so I wasn't confident enough to wear it often. 🙈😅

Thanks to your inspirational triumph, I'm going to get that sucker out of storage, go get some thrift store sheets (and drapes -- I love making skirts from drapes) and see what I can do. I once spent 38 straight hours making an authentic hakama and kataginu for my son (lots of time on the floor with a ruler and chalk). Somehow this looks to me like a wrap around apron, maybe because of the lack of side seams and/or zipper or perhaps the checkered cloth. Anyway, it's very nice and well done. Good idea using the bed sheet. My mother was a seamstress supreme, self taught. She could make anything from cloth, often using patterns she designed. When working a pattern she'd not used before, she'd cut it from old bed sheets so she could make adjustments before cutting from brand new cloth.

An interesting variation on this dress may be to substitute an attached step-in pair of capri pants for the front dress panel, giving you the outer skirt in the sides and back, with mid calf pants underneath. Putting it on would require stepping into the pants, placing head through the opening, and then bringing the sides back and around to fasten at the waist. A different fabric could be used starting at the back waistline to give contrast between the 2 layers.

I am rediscovering sewing after a decade's hiatus. I need a new machine, but renting them is RIDICULOUS. Like 60.00/hour for a sewing station at Joanne's! Anyway, this was EXTREMELY charming. TY! New sub;)

Thank you! And wow! That is quite pricey! You may want to check your local libraries! A lot of places now have a ‘lending library’ for things like tools, yard equipment, seeds, etc. and a common inclusion is a sewing machine! You may just be able to check one out or use it there!

Hi Kaity, I'm wondering about @SewingSilly's cleaned up version. I looked that up here on YT and seem to only find 3 videos and nothing about this dress. Could you clarify where we can get the cleaned up version?

I love those old patterns. My mother was multi-talented and one of her great skills was sewing, so growing up we had custom-fit clothing (bought off the rack and then altered by Mom), wonderful dresses and pants and tops, and she could sew any Halloween costume idea we came up with. I do not sew much. I've made a few costumes and a couple of pieces of clothing. I recall one Halloween costume that I made out of felt and instead of sewing the seams I just stapled them, lol. But I did borrow my daughter's machine recently for a couple of simple items and it made me miss my mom so much, and miss having an expert seamstress in the house, willing to sew for all of us. Good memories. Your dress turned out darling. Good job! :D Also, your cat is really cute!
