so much of modern cosplay tricks is just people re-discovering what furries and homestucks did 10 years ago, tragic that the knowledge wasn't better preserved or shared across fandoms. That said, there are def some awesome techniques that weren't available to us back in the day, i look forward to having a chance to start cosplaying again

Honestly? It's the only form of wig styling I'm familiar with as a low budget Splatoon cosplayer. I could get a wig and chop it up and gloss it so much that it's rigid, or I could just make a head form and paper mache it 😂

As someone who is making hats using Fosshape (the thicker stuff is a B*tch to sew through), you may want to try butting the edges against each other and zig zagging your seams, then heat set it as it will glue itself to itself with heat, and you won't have bumps dealing with the seam allowance where you might not want it.

I don't know if this would work for cosplay but there is something in the BJD & Doll repainting communities that might be helpful since it involves synthetic hair/fibers for wigs and glue. BUT; if you have a bunch of loose fiber that you need to make into wefts you can get those page protector sheets people use in school, and glue a roughly shaped line of the fiber using tacky glue on there from like about 1/4th of an inch from the top of the fiber down. Let it dry completely and then trim a straight line where the glued edge is to even it out and bam! You have a weft of hair uniformly lined up and the weft itself is almost invisible. It might help when you have to glue those small bits of fiber in the back of the wig and save you some time from having to trim the fibers. I'm so tempted to try the fosshape base since I've been wanting to do a 2016 magical mirai miku cosplay for years but pigtail wigs that are super thick and heavy are far from my current comfort level. Great video and thank you so, so much for all of these tips!

i dont know if this would help at all, but since you commented about the hair being in a weft helping, here we go!!! I see wig makers usually make their own wefts by just.... gluing the hell out of one side of the hair before starting?? like if you've ever seen doll customizers make doll wigs, they lay down the hairs on plastic, then use a brush to glue down an end, and then trim it to make it prettier. it might also help with the parts and stuff!!! idk if it would work with how you've been making your wigs, but it might make it easier on

I work as a photographer and my work uses the Singer steamworks steamer for gowns. It's a lot bigger but I recommend the steamers that have a separate body and long neck because they have more water storage than a hand held steamer.

I agree! More professional steamers that stay hot and work for long times are the long neck hose with a head and separate chamber for the water. It’s also much more maneuverable and a lot of theater costumers use them!

I hope you're having a good day, and also, all of the ways i know to style a wig specifically for cosplay, i wouldn't use them on real hair 😂 I have never seen a cosplay wig made of real hair, so I'm thinking that a majority if not all are made from plastic, so the way we style them is different than you would with real hair. Because we're essentially heating and shaping plastic, and we're not looking forward to brush our wig for every use, hence lots of hair spray and literally gluing. If wind messes up your carefully crafted wig, is it even a cosplay wig ? (I'm joking.)

Honestly? The Wefting that you were doing for the majority of this was actually a lot of Doll repainters do when they're doing th gluing method. So It's cool to see that it can work for bigger projects to make it easier to get the exact style you want (They make a rigid wig cap with plastric wrap and glue and let it dry into a helmet like thing, not too different with what you did with the special foamy thing you had to warm up and let cool down.) So this is really cool to see you work. I wonder if it's possiable to maybe get a hot metal pole similar to a hot metal chopstick to help with some of the shaping in the future. or at least wonder if there's other techniques that doll repainters use that can apply to a larger project like this.

Came out really nice ❤ Thought.. for the neckline you could also put a piece of hair on a weft underneath the weft that is ugly. Then before glueing it pull the ends of the hair through from the bottom to the top with a latch hook 💡

I miss the cosplay parties my friends and I had back in high school where we all worked on our cosplays together on my living room floor. The laughter and chaos was amazing. My current friend group is making it's way out of cosplay thanks to the hellscape we live in draining our time, energy, and money and just sucks. I am hoping that when I finally get free from this level hell that I can find that kind of friend group again. I am sorry this is so sappy I am just a little overwhelmed with moving and the stuff that goes with it that I got a bit emotional. You are an amazing individual and your videos make rough days like this just a little less bad. Thank you for what you do and I can't wait to see what you do next. ❤

I'm very curious about this process on a darker wig! Like, would it be harder to cover all that white if a wig was a dark blue or a black. I wonder if it would be worth dying the fabric somehow to match? But at the same time, fabric dye has to be hot, which would set it and that's a no no....maybe some kind of colored spray....? Its insanely cool, I really love how it turned out.
@hope7317

couldn’t you die the wig after you’ve sewn it together? in this video sarah didn’t start gluing the wefts on until after it was already shaped to her head. it probably warrants some experimenting, but if the material doesn’t come in the color of your wig, that could do it?

Indestructible wigs are my passion xD Also thermoplastics or epoxy putty (or even blobs of hotglue) are great for covering sharp wire end and metal bits. Though I still recommend hammering and/or filing first tbh. EVERY cosplayer should spend some time in the nuts&bolts section of the hardware store you will absolutely find useful things! I've always wanted to play with fosshape (and that other mesh stuff, I think its called varaform) but yeeeeah the price, whew! ANYWAY I recommend a full size garment steamer! Itll hold at least a liter of water usually, it's absolutely worth it even if you get a cheap one.
