As I'm in the US, I'm only addressing US law. Keep that in mind. It would be great if the term "non-toxic" was regulated by some agency. Unfortunately, it isn't, and doesn't have a particular meaning (from what I can find). There is a US group called the Consumer Product Safety Commission that oversees product safety education and labeling among other things. They discuss which products require labeling as hazardous. "To require labeling, a product must first be toxic, corrosive, flammable or combustible, an irritant, or a strong sensitizer, or it must generate pressure through decomposition, heat, or other means. Second, the product must have the potential to cause substantial personal injury or substantial illness during or as a result of any customary or reasonably foreseeable handling or use, including reasonably foreseeable ingestion by children." The important part of that statement is this: "illness during or as a result of any customary or reasonably foreseeable handling or use." That means the risk would be whenever the product is used as the manufacturer intended. It's counterintuitive, I know, but that's what it means. That's why I share the information as often as I do- because a lot of people don't realize that "non-toxic" doesn't mean safe, or safe to ingest.

Thank you so much for this ^^. As an added regulated word (there are others so this is just 1 example) is the term "organic". That term, according to the FDA and NOP, only applies to crops and livestock. So, if your vodka has "organic" on it, it's likely pure marketing bs to trick consumers. One more relevant one is leather. The only real leathers are "Full-grain leather, top grain leather, split-grain leather, genuine leather, and bonded leather" with best to worst quality in that order. Honestly, only just learned about most of those when double checking "genuine leather" was the real label. Any other leather product not labeled that exactly is faux/ plastic leather. That would be labels like real leather, actual leather, pleather, etc. Apparently this other site says "genuine leather" means real leather, not quality of leather.... TL:DR Marketing sucks and is made to trick consumers

I'm a wig stylist for drag performers, and my absolute FAVORITE wig glue is the Clear Gel Tacky Glue. It's perfect for sculpted styles. Also, it doesn't leave as harsh of a line in the hair as the original tacky glue does.

Also in the doll making community they tend to make their own wefts by glueing the top of the strands and laying them on a silicone sheet

My side job is making wigs, its kinda the same! You put glue on the ends to keep it as a weft like doll makers do. Then, you use watered down tacky glue and a silicon spatula to cover the fibers. But yeah, glue goes on the felt/pollyfill, the weft is basically applied then soaked in the glue by applying a bunch to the weft its self. It helps soak without doing what she did and making a mess lol 😂😂 But yeah, we make the ends with glue!

This is how I make quick wefts out of cut fibres with high temp glue gun. The silicone mat helps me sandwich the glue in layers with the loose wefts. Way faster when your using the weft for Glued hairstyles.

My mom was a professional wigmaker for 20 years! I asked her about wig glue and she said 1) you want something called "gafquat" dont ask me what it is, she just gave me that name 2) lots of people used elmers glue a lot of punks in the 80/90s used it for their mowhawks

Gafquat is a thing used to make hairspray, it’s like the base compound of what makes hairspray sticky. It’s used a lot to lay hair flat for bald caps

We got a very similar glue to the moment glue here! It’s called Pattex, comes in a very similar tube and works exactly like contact cement. It also has a clear version that is a bit harder to get, but maybe you’ll have better luck trying to find and ship this one to your country? EDIT: THEY’RE THE SAME BRAND! I just did a deeper dive and turns out Moment is also known as Pattex in different countries!

So, I'm looking at this from the perspective of a hairdresser, but I think there is skill overlap enough to offer suggestions. You could use a hair coloring brush with a thinned out pva glue to apply. Put the glue in a bowl and dip the dye brush in to saturate and apply on the locks of hair. As for developing a system to hold loose locks in place, you could invest in some flat duckbill hair clips (these are not clips for wearing aesthetically. These are flat metal clips designed for sectioning and clipping back hair when cutting.) Take the section of hair you want to work with and clip one end into the duckbill, lay the section down on a piece of cardboard or other similar hard surface you dont care about, and hold the clip against the board with one hand, while dipping the coloring brush and painting the hair in long strokes going one way with the other hand. When one side is saturated, flip it over and saturate the other side. Shape as desired while leaving the clip on the end to act as a handle, allow to dry. The clips could also double as clamps to hold pieces onto something like the side of a wig cap, or a piece of cardboard. Similarly with the fake hairline, you would put your thinned glue in a bowl and use a coloring brush to apply some to the hairline of the wig in thin layers, then lay a lock of hair on the section, clip the end in place with a duckbill to prevent fly aways, and paint the top section with another thin layer of glue and allow to dry. I would also suggest retrying your experiments with matte mod podge, because I think that could give you the hold of tacky glue with the no-shine factor of Elmer's glue.

Sarah, thanks for your experiment videos! I must say that in Russia we don't use exactly the same glue that you purchased. Adhesives from the Moment series - for the Russian market, or Pattex - for the European market, are produced by Henkel. You used Classic glue, which is suitable for a huge number of materials. But cosplayers style their wigs using glue, which in Russia is called Crystal, and in the European market - Transparent, which you just mentioned. Even after 5 years it does not turn yellow. Perhaps the clear glue is as toxic as the yellow Classic glue, but it doesn't smell as strong as Classic. So Transparent glue is comfortable to use indoors. Of course, despite the almost complete absence of odor, the room still needs to be ventilated.

Yes, I think S got mixed up and looked up Crystal instead of Classic Moment glue. Classic is always yellow, Crystal stays clear (unless exposed to direct sunlight long enough). I prefer Crystal for doll wigs because it's transparent when dry and just stretchy enough to avoid cracks when things shift. But the main issue, I think, is that artificial hair doesn't soak up liquids, thus they rely on the abudant amount of glue to hold everything together (think fruit suspended in jello). Personally, why glue the fibers onto the front line of the wig, when sewing on a prepared weft would be so much easier? Just wondering.

I dislike working with glue so much that I instead learned how to make my own lace front wigs. If you like crochet (and I know you do!) lace fronting isn't that much different! I'd love to see a video of you trying it out. If nothing else, it's great for bragging rights lol.

For glued hairlines I have some tips! It’s a good idea to make glued wefts beforehand, on like plastic wrap so you can peel it off. Making the wefts before hand makes them easier to glue onto the full wig. Also to deal with blending the glue covered hair into the rest, use water along the harsh edge. Another tip, a lot of wig makers will make glue covered hair wefts then glue more hair on top with just a bit of glue and a lot of hair spray. Looks more natural if less glue is used (at least on the top of the hair)

Yo yo cosplay wig comissioner here. We all have different methods but this is the little bit of help I can give just based off of this video. 1.) Use a hair elastic to tie off a section of hair before you cut it. The hair tie offers similar stability to a sewn weft. 2.) Teasing/crimping hair before saturating it with glue will reduce the amount of hair you need and reduce the shine. 3.) For odangos, paint the base styrofoam before you add the hair. The hair you add to the foam ball should actually be in quite thin. The painted base will help hide any gaps in the wefts that you miss. 4.) I use elmers to saturate large areas of hair, hot glue to adhere dried hair sections to the base (typically foam understructures and drill curls), and tacky glue for hairlines. 5.) Nontoxic glues dry under the heat of a hairdryer. That's very helpful for glued hairlines! Please feel free to ask questions!

Glued hairlines are created when tufts of hair are glued to the hairline of the wig, making the hairline look more natural without having to spend the time/money of a lace front wig. Look up "glue hairline tutorial cosplay" to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

OK so I don't make wigs but I do make doll wigs. I have used modpodge specifically, the Matte modpodge for years and it is amazing. Also, Elmer's glue all work substantially better than Elmer's school glue. If I'm not mistaken, it's closer to a wood glue instead of a glue that you would use in school. These are also the clues that I normally glues for book binding are acid-free, which means they will not discolor, which means they would generally be good for wigs, too. In Ph, we use UHU and silicon glues. having a silicon brush and cleaning you hands helps have a clean weft and less strays. Using some uhu glue on one end helps to get that familiar sewn weft effect so strands wont shift. then you can drench the rest of the strands with clear glues or tacky glue. it dries faster than elmers or the other pba glues. i use hot glue to stick the end of finished wefts to the headbase, silicon/clear glues to shape and bond glues, uhu/e6000 for ends. I used E6000 before for my Nadeko goddess wig, and it yellows with age so i wont recommend it light wigs

Silicone would work so much better to keep flexibility but it isn't cheap which is why I think it isn't often listed or used for beginners. The tubes of silpoxy (from smooth on) which is air activated are so damn expensive for such a small amount of product. Plus the way to get it cheaper is to use 2 part silicones which can add some extra difficulty if you've never used anything like it. Not to mention if you mess up the mixture you'd end up ruining the whole wig unless you want to spend too much time cleaning off uncured silicone

i was excited about the gorilla glue, because they have a gorilla glue spray thats an alternative substitute for got2b glue. especially when cosplayers or frag queens want a wig thats going to be in that hairstyle permamently. Gorilla glue spray method I've a story to share. it became a dragqueen/ some cosplayers favorite tool after an accidently with an unfortunate bridesmaid. A woman used gorilla glue spray for her hair that was fxed up in a nice updo. after the wedding she had to go to the hospital because the glue held so well she couldn't get her hair free. ever since drag queens have used it for updos or unique styles they know that they'll keep permamently in that shape. and recently lastr year ive heard some cosplayers have used the spray. So i was very curious at what the tube glue version was going to do and i was amazed that it work just as good.

your pain in not having the clear contact glue easily available to you is how a lot of us outside US feel about most materials US-centric cosplayers use :") we have more things available now but I remember having to use watered down pva glue instead of mod podge, never really had easy access to worbla, even for foam we had to reaaaally dig to find the correct yoga mats and most of the time they ended up being super squishy. It took us ages to actually get got2b spray glue!!! I'm super happy things are just a little more accessible and I'm glad you were able to find an alternative :D

I’m not the biggest wig stylist but to keep the glue from getting everywhere you want a glue spreader!! Using Card stock (mail pamphlet, wig tags, etc.) so that only one hand gets glue on it. For glued hairlines you also want to make the wefts before putting it on the wig and then applying it when it’s dry. so it’s not just glue bonding to wet glue. Hot glue is best for anything that you aren’t going to be seeing. It bonds well for most stuff but it will not be clear. It is great for just making some “wefts” by sticking a glob of hot glue at the end and spreading it out with a spreading tool. It works great for time pieces but is very hard to get out of wigs if you mess it up. Very good for wig stubbing though and gluing things to the wig lace. You can also use hot glue on styrofoam for buns (I’ve done it a few times now) just be sure to use a low temp glue and it will only melt a LITTLE bit. This however is fine when you’ve stubbed the base of the wig since it’s going to need more room once the fibers are folded over. Finally, it wasn’t mentioned but UHU glue is non toxic and is a good in-between for wigs and doing glued hairlines.

Was surprised that you didn’t use a wig styling class from skillshare to help you out here only to find there’s 0 wig related classes on the platform! I know of lots of cosplayers who privately sell tutorials and classes for wig making and styling, I don’t know how ethical it would be to take some classes from them and come back with tips and tricks you’ve found but I’d love to see you work something out with a fellow cosplayer where they give you some help learning how to work with wigs and you can promote their paid for classes? Would love to see what you come up with 😊 (also love ur videos!! Not even a frequent cosplayer myself but I love the art of this sort of thing and you’re insanely relaxing and enjoyable to watch- been here since ur rose quartz days!)

when i was younger i once used elmers school glue on the surface of a pure white wig, and a few years later it had yellowed! something to keep in mind! also, theres a method for making wefts out of cut hair, involving saturating the top edge of the hair with glue (i used tacky glue) & smooshing it between 2 thin cut strips of fabric (ive used cotton broadcloth). then when its dry, sew over it a few times to secure it. its much more conspicuous than a normal premade sewn weft, but it can work for some purposes. (i cant explain this well but i know theres tutorials online.) as someone who knows well the pain of being covered in hair and glue with constantly sticky wet hands, i commend the effort to learn, and i know i have a very long way to go as well hjswfhdj

I just finished my biggest wig ever and I swear by UHU glue. Specifically the green solvent free version. It’s a little pricy but is the best thing I’ve ever tried. It dries clear, is super strong, and allows you to smooth the fibers really well in the drying process. Plus it does dry pretty fast but not too fast. I had plenty of time to style how I needed, then hit it with a hairdryer for about 15 seconds and it was good to go. I think it’s also more eco friendly (I could be wrong?) and is non toxic!

As eastern european, I use Moment glue for everything, it can honestly glue a broken heart back together. But never would have thought to use it on hair because of how hard it is when fully dry... But for hairline and partings it seems quite nice, wow! Cosplayers are the craftiest and smartest people ever, I learned so much form them about makeup and clothes and now hair.

I make wigs in the ball jointed doll community. The glue I prefer to use is Aleene’s fabric fusion. With the loose hair fibers, I glue the top and cut the ends even to make the wefts. I also use this glue in case I need to put water on the hair and the fabric glue is made so you can wash the clothes you use the glue on. It’s also nontoxic and flexible.

I HATE looking at bugs, so it gave me just enough time to process the incoming visual threat and cover my screen with my hand. Ooooh I know that "Moment" glue - but in germany, the brand is called "Pattex", and the glue is "Kraftkleber" - literally translates to Power Glue. I've used that stuff for anything you'd need contact cement for - aka mostly connecting EVA Foam, but also adding small plastic gems to fabric, and adding velcro to EVA foam. So far, it always held up well - didn't do any heavy wig styling so far, the most glue-like thing on my wigs is the yellow got2b spray :D There's a solvent-free, "non toxic" version of the pattex glue, but I still only use it with ventilation / opened windows and a mask, because I'm sensitive to any glue, no matter how non toxic it's supposed to be. There's also a regular and a transparent drying version - i can't read russian, but the tube of moment glue you have looks like it's the regular, yellowish stuff.

Thank you for doing the god’s work once again! Also, if someone wants to try the Moment glue out, here are some tips. The one Sarah was using in the video is actually “classic” and not “crystal”, which is probably the reason it’s yellow. The shelf life of both types is 2 years, btw. Moment does have somewhat toxic fumes, so a well ventilated area is a must. And you do have to wear gloves if you wanna smear it with your fingers. However, if you get a bit of the glue on your skin you just have to wash that spot thoroughly and it’s gonna be alright (unless you have extremely sensitive skin). Finally, it is suitable for styrene foam! Oh, and $20 for 30 ml of glue is insane.

what i use to stop my hands getting sticky is a silicone flat brush! and using uhu glue instead of.... literally any of these LOL;;; rip although tacky glue mixed with water is a great way to keep the very tips of spikes in shape. and i use hot glue in wigs when i need to attach a big styled spike in a weird way.

Here in Canada there's Lepage contact cement that dries clear. I give it 10 minutes to dry and then it bonds to foam and leather-y fabrics very well. Bonus, I've smelled its toxic fumes in my basement all summer and still have not developed a cancer! Unfortunately, I didn't think of using it on my wig and used white glue instead, which really didn't have an amazing grip.

Fellow Canadian cosplayer here, Lepage also makes a low-odour contact cement! I’ve never used regular contact cement so I can’t compare, but it worked great for the bit of foam armour I made! It reminded me a lot of masking fluid in both appearance and smell. I personally recommend it and think it’s a great option if you don’t have access to a properly ventilated working space :)

The "Moment Crystal Glue" is also the same company called "Pattex". I don't know if this brand is only called "Pattex" in Germany, but maybe it gives you more oportunities to find this glue! The kind of glue you are searching for then would be "Pattex Classic Klebstoff" or "Pattex Transparent Klebstoff". MAYBE you are successful finding it in the US

Well, she still used the wrong glue anyway. This one used for some random stuff, but mostly for leather and fabric and over flexible materials, but she needed the “Crystal” one, with silver packaging and an angel on it. Its texture is thicker and gel-like and very easy to control, I love it very much. To be honest, I have never seen anything similar, sorry( I was looking for a similar glue in Spain since I lived there for a long time, but there are no similar ones

Oh and the “Classic” one or just “Классический» is always yellow, so this glue has not deteriorated or changed over time, it remains fresh 👍 but it’s the wrong one and it will become like soft rubber after, it can be twisted into a ball until it is completely high, and when it dries, it can tear as it stretches. The “crystal” hardens and does not stretch like rubber btw Mb I can make a video on this dead old channel without contexts so my friends will wonder wth is going on in my head, but it’s ok, i WILL make a video for people who can’t bye it and test it by themself, so they can search for the similar one in their country

Hot glue can also help a lot, you give up on it too fast. For example, you can use it to seal all your hair at the top and make it become wefts at the beginning of your project. If it didn't end up clean and nice, you just cut it with scissors once your weft is Elmer's glued or attached to your wig. Great to apply fabric, shaping, and other stuff. Think of it as the ugly step. Once everything is in its place, you use other kinds of glue to make it pretty.

We have a similar glue to the "european" one, it looks the same and is called pattex, if i remember correctly it dries kind of yellow, so it does not work that great on light colures wigs. What i suggest is using Loctite Repair Extreme (red, square tube). It dries into a silicone texture and is very flexible, perfect for hairlines. Work in very small sections (1 cm- wide part). Only smush the glue in the ends of the "wefts" and work upwards 2-3 cm ("blend" the end of the glue), make sure every hair is coated, use a lot of pressure to scrape of the excess glue, wait until dry and you can use the piece like a weft or wait until tacky and use more glue on the wig and press the two sides together. Use gravity to hold the weft in place and wait until it dries. I used this technique for a tight ponytail wig and it worked great! The hair stays in place, but it does take some practice. My best tip is to never get glue on your hands and always use a spatula/card/sharp-comb/needle when handling the hair. The hairs end up looking a bit shiny ( silicone texture) but it is not too noticeable. I have not tried tacky glue or the other, but it is great to know there are non-toxic alternatives so I can work inside!!

One thing I’m decent at when cosplaying is wig styling, and I learn more and more everyday by watching tutorials! I made my first sailor moon wig for Momocon this year and I did use too big of the buns but I was very proud on how it came out. It looked kind of bad still though but that just means I can learn and do it better next time!

I use UHU glue! I get it from Amazon and it's honestly great. That plus a little silicone spatula (like one used for skincare application!) to spread it onto the wefts has changed my wig game forever. I learned about them from a few big wig stylists way back when! I'm currently tackling Neuvillette from Genshin and I couldn't imagine doing it without either tbh

Nice to see someone get as messy as I do with glue!!!! From my hilariously limited experience (one up-do wig) I used uhu glue on the tip of the wefts beforehand to keep everything together, trimming it once dry so it was neat(ish), and again to stick the wefts to the wig. It dries pretty fast and clear and apart from being a little messy (that could just be me) it was pretty easy to work with. You want to keep your hands as clean as possible cuz when I started I kept getting the bits of dried glue that were on my hands stuck on my wefts!!!! It also dried really stiff so actually makes an up-do wig easier to wear as it stays on my head without need for clips etc so great for hairlines, though my ponytail is pretty small by cosplay standards.

Hey Sarah! If you do need any help with learning how to properly make the little hair strands or the glued hairline, I would be more than happy to help! You pretty much need to get the gist of how to hold the hair strand in one hand, while spreading the glue properly between the fibers with your other hand. I’m starting a cosplay of a character, and I never ask my parents for anything, but the cosplay definitely couldn’t manage with my natural hair and I had to get a wig 🥲 I found a roll of yarn of the character’s hair color in my attic, it was old, and thought I could do something, but obviously I had to first figure out what the hell I was thinking- I saw a tutorial on KZbin on how to make yarn into hair, it was very helpful, but the shaping method was very unclear… this video helped me so much, the character has shiny hair, so tacky glue is definitely my best option. Also I used exactly same glue just in my room with closed window and with no protection. Because my family uses it that way. Now I think maybe we shouldn't.. Great video as always!!

I swear by Clear Gel Contact Pattex glue in a tube, it's my favourite one to use on wigs! I made a fake hairline for my friend and that wig survived an underwater photoshoot without any kind of damage. It's also very fast drying which is good if youre a fast worker like me but can be troublesome if you work slower

My favorite glue with wigstyling is the blue Aqua Mono Glue! It has two ends to it so you can use a pin point end for precision and the thicker brush end to help spread the glue evenly! I use a silicone mat and one of those silicone spatulas you use for face masks (you could also use a dollar store minu cooking one!) to help me with making wefts though!

I've been doing my own wig experiments lately and I've personally found working with the hair in wefts, letting it dry and then trimming off the weft end to be the easiest way to keep the hair smooth, non tangled and the least amount of waste but I can see why that wouldn't work for every project

In my area(north of Germany/Baltic Sea) I have a local crafting store where you get special goods for satisfying crafting experiences. Sure, you pay extra but the over all experiences increase by at least 20% because you can trust their choices. (The sold me filler/spachtel in a tube and it fixed the broken nose of my dress up figure) the Textil glue by bohin I use for 2.99€ by 50ml is the best I can assure. It takes about 12h to fully cure but holy I love this glue! Prepare the hair and glue it in place with fast drying glue or pin it in place. Just like this. (I’ve done a few hairline now and I think I will try your “technique” for Neuvillette👀✨)
