ENGINE/GEARBOX The B3 3.3 engine is based on the S52B32 engine from the US-spec E36 M3 3.2 with 240 hp. The cylinder head and the single-VANOS system have more in common with the BMW M50 engine than any M-engine, with a regular M50 intake and hydraulic valve lifters. Alpina increased the bore to 86.4mm as well as a longer stroke (94mm). The cylinder head is tuned in traditional fashion as well a new exhaust manifold. Extremely light pistons as well as a newly developed crankshaft have been used in conjunction with a new torsional-vibration damper, sustaining permanent revs of up to 7200 rpm with ease. The engine produces 280 bhp at 6100 rpm and a torque of 335 Nm at 4300 rpm. The new B3 3.3 is also very frugal, only 9,9 litre/100 km in mixed driving conditions The standard gearbox is a Getrag six-speed unit, optionally a five-speed Switch-Tronic box is available.

Alpina B3 3.3 Touring Nr 041 - 1/147 cars, and it's mine, sitting 3 meters behind my back on the other side of the wall in my E-series garage unit. I have to congratulate and welcome Taylor to the world of Alpina ownership. Alpina newer did yellow Bilstien on the B3, they suppose to be black with white Alpina label on them, also the springs have wite Alpina text on them if they are from factory or Alpina OEM. Alpina B3 comes with a special developed chassie from Alpina for the E46 version. Yes the Alpina B3 3.3 rear subframe are from E46 330d, the Diesel subframe have 1 extra reinforcment bracket welded in compare to the gasolin version of 330i. Both upper and lower camber arms are the same for all E46 even Alpina and M3, the driveshaft are the same for 330d and 330i, the trailing arms are they same for 330d and 330i but not for the M3, the M3 arms even have M3 logo in the cast iron. Alpina did not use any M-Sport things for the B3 3.3, so there is no M-sport wheel or M-Sport suspension or M-Sport sway bars on Alpina B3 3.3. Even the front wishbone arms is the standard none M-Sport from Alpina factory as far as I know and have seen so far. Since Taylor have uppgraded shocks from Bilstein most likly B6 or B8 I recomend uppgrading the front wishbone and M3 swaybar in front and xd or xI swaybar in the rear if he wanne stay true to BMW OEM and not to much 3rd part....It will make the car so much more stable in the corners. Again congratulation to joining an exclusive comunity Taylor🙂

The only thing i would add to these videos is a little more description for what each thing means or does… Gareth is incredible at it when hes on camera, he just quickly says what an LPG conversion actually is for the people who love the channel but aren’t as mechanically in the know… I suspect theres alot of people like me who are really interested in the auto world but are not coming from a background of knowledge… like i said, Gareth is the perfect example every time hes called in to help…

What a beautiful B3, can’t believe someone would put LPG on one! I do love an Alpina, I grew up with my father Alpina B12 (E32) back in the early 90s. Also my father was hoping to buy an E34 B10 Bi-turbo before the B12, when someone wrote of his E34 535iSe, but the salesman was to lazy to pull it out from the back of the showroom :) I look forward in seeing what happens next to this project. Don’t dismiss LPG if it makes the car more usable and therefore enjoyable… get it checked and improve the installation, it may have been a Lithuanian lock-up job. And the tanks only have a 10 year lifespan or something before they need replacement.

I love bmw probably more than any other cars and i love nerding about them but i've never been into alpinas. i thought they were just more luxurious versions but apparently I'm very wrong. After looking up the specs of the 3.3 I was completely fascinated. I love NA engines and now I'm completely blown away by how cool the engines in every alpina are.

Quaif's ATB is a torque biasing diff, same in principle, similar in design to the Torsen. Great for fast road, and spec racing applications. Plated diffs are lovely, but a whole different kettle of fish in terms of setup and maintenance.

BMR Performance Ltd, Turner Hills, Crawley, Sussex are responsible for multiple ALPINA B3 manual conversion. Early 2018 I first visited them and there was a B3S 3.4 Touring converted to 6spd manual there… Come ‘22 group of us went to the Ring and the same B3S Touring & a B3 3.3 coupe present, both 6spd manual conversions by BMR Performance Ltd! Also responsible building two E39 M5 Tourings, so OEM you’d swear they were built by BMW in Dingolfing!

In my experience, transmission failsafe on the E46 and E39 are usually caused by moisture in that big round electrical connector going to the transmission.

Bit late now. But a Vauxhall Senator I had developed a gearbox fault that was untraceable. Turned out, the headlamp wiper fuse had blown. Apparently it was also the fuse for the gearbox brain. Maybe something on your car shared a fuse with the box?
